Looking for a gorgeous 'tent' dress for wedding?!

Hi all,

I'm off to a wedding soon and am heavily pregnant. Along with my baby bump, I've piled on weight around my bottom, hips and thighs. I don't like the cut of a lot of maternity wear which often has bump space but then is closely cut. I'd rather find a non-maternity dress if possible, that is voluminous/cut widely, if that makes sense?! Would quite like it to be midi (length-wise) and am happy to go for strong patterns/colours/styles - I'm not looking for something very conservative/classically formal. I'm not a fan of polyester as it always goes very static, but like viscose.

Thanks in advance for ideas! x

What size are you?

totallyradllama · 24/11/2019 16:34

Are you thinking of a "trapeze" dress? Just watch out that the don't end up too short at the front

Sorry realise that's polyester

ASOS has some nice stuff.

Maternity range but because of the pleats it could be worn when not pregnant. My friend used to buy pleated maternity dresses in the sale even when she wasn’t pregnant as they’re very forgiving!

totallyradllama - I'm about a 10 on the top half and more like a 12 on the bottom at the moment (was 6-8 pre-pregnancy). Yes, a trapeze dress might work well. I guess I'm looking for something with lots of material in it that falls over the bump rather than clings to every lump and bump.

Thanks TakeAChansey - I particularly like the Mamalicious black/white dress but it looks very 'waisted' on the (non-pregnant?) model and I'm not sure how it would work with my bump! x

Go have a look at the normal shops and size up in something that is a bit oversized anyway, that’s what I did for a wedding. I don’t know if you can get these brands in the UK but Gorman and Max have a lot of what you are looking for but I reckon Zara would too.

Cos is your friend I think! Lots of ‘tent’/ trapeze dresses - although can be quite pricey ... www.cosstores.com/en_gbp/women/womenswear/dresses/product.sleeveless-frilled-dress-green.0836117001.html

Yesyesitsme · 24/11/2019 17:31

I love the black and white Mamalicious dress too. It says the model is wearing a foam bump but could have fooled me - what bump?! Free deliveries and returns so worth a go I reckon.

Yesyesitsme · 24/11/2019 17:33

PS. At size 10-12 you're really not as big as you think you are! Just big in comparison with your usual size. I bet you'll look amazing.

totallyradllama · 24/11/2019 17:42

The mamalicious one I think is a tie belt maybe - perhaps you'd tie it above the bump it's hard to see.

eBay might be your friend here. Dressy maternity dresses have often only been worn once and then resold When I was PG I went to a black tie do in an eBay bargain and then spent the whole night telling everyone I was wearing a £6 dress. Don't go that though

thedevilinablackdress · 24/11/2019 20:29

Check out COS, tent-y dresses are usually their thing

Canyousewcushions · 24/11/2019 20:49

It might be worth looking at the tiffany rose website ( check out their clearance section and/or looking for them on eBay, depending on your budget....)

They are maternity but do a mix of looser fitting and more bodycon styles, is on the dressy side so plenty suitable for smart events.
