I saw a coat online I really loved but it was ££££ so I decided to go and try it on. So I went up to London and went to the branch where they had reserved one for me.
I tried it on and love love loved it. But when I took it off I was covered in fluff from the lining. The lining was a pale fleecy grey. I was completely covered. The sales girl seemed to think this was normal and I should buy it and wash the lining. But the coat was £249 and dry clean only. So what if I bought it and dry cleaned it and it still did it? Would I get my money back and the money I’d spent getting it dry cleaned. Then she suggested I could hand wash it. Another sales girl joined in and suggested hand washing. So I said that I thought it was odd to buy a coat and have to wash it before you could wear it. They both agreed it was completely normal and implied I was the odd one.
I didn’t buy the coat.
Am I odd? Do you wash things before you wear them?

I do wash some things before I wear them but definitely not coats! You were right and they obviously just wanted the sale.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 24/11/2019 09:22

No, they’re odd. Plus if you wash a dry clean coat it’s dry likely to ruin it and you wouldn’t then be able to exchange it. They wanted the sale.

I asked them what would happen if I ha d washed it and it shrank and they looked unimpressed. Maybe the manufacturer could have washed it so I didn’t have to spend the rest of the day looking like a sheep.

I’d expect to wear a coat loads before having to wash it!

Would a lint roller have helped?

BeatriceTheBeast · 24/11/2019 11:54

Maybe the manufacturer could have washed it so I didn’t have to spend the rest of the day looking like a sheep.

Halloween Grin

And exactly. If it was just a case of a quick wee hand wash, why didn't the manufacturer do that?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/11/2019 12:24

Was the lining detachable to wash it?
You'll have post a link, someone might have it and advice you if it does continue to shed?

Bit like the school sweatshirts that shed red fluff over the white shirts and polos . Obviously not a £250 dry clean coat but accepted that they moult until you wash them.

I wouldn't be happy with a coat I had to wash or brush first .

Floisme · 24/11/2019 12:32

No I wouldn't wash beforehand. I would also take a dim view of any sales staff proposing I should ignore a care label.
The absolute minimum I would expect would be a discount to cover the cost of dry cleaning plus the inconvenience.
As for making you feel like you're the odd one Angry No wonder fashion retailing is in the shit.

This is it. @TableNiner I was beyond a lint roller I would have need several.

It was that they both agreed I should definitely wash it first even though the label said dry clean only. Apparently they both wash everything they ever buy.

Ooh it is a gorgeous coat OP.

But no, I wouldn't spend £250 on a coat that was going to cover me in fluff and that I'd have to get dry cleaned which may or may not solve the issue/ruin the cost.

Bluntness100 · 24/11/2019 13:28

Nah, they were talking shit. They didn't want to say yeah that's really bad, not worth buying it, 🤣

Bluntness100 · 24/11/2019 13:29

Actually to be fair, now I've looked at the link I reckon you could cold wash the lining.

MrsPMT · 24/11/2019 13:29

Very odd! Lovely coat though, you've made me want a new one, the black one looks fab! Too pricey for me though, along with the fluff problem you've mentioned Grin

BlandAndBoring · 24/11/2019 13:43

I'm sure looking at the link you could buy a nice coat, that won't shed, for less money that is similar.

AppleHEAD · 24/11/2019 13:44

@Bluntness100 Possibly but it’s a lot of money for the risk.
It’s expensive for me but I haven’t had a new coat for years and I just loved it.
But I’ll just stick to my old one until I can find a new I like as much.

I should say both the sales women were very pleasant. Just not very realistic.

OP posts:
Oldraver · 24/11/2019 15:22

It's really odd that the lining is dry clean but the coat washable. I wouldn't wnat to take the risk of it still shedding after whatever you shouldn't have to do to it

AppleHEAD · 24/11/2019 16:36

@Oldraver the whole thing was dry clean only. The staff just suggested I could hand wash it.

Chewbecca · 24/11/2019 16:39

They were on commission I reckon. Really not normal to wash clothes before you wear them, especially coats.
