What do you 40-something husbands wear if they have no interest in clothes?

DH is starting to feel he has outgrown his t-shirt, hoody and jeans "style" of his younger days and wants to buy some more grown up stuff, but isn't sure where to start.
He has zero interest in fashion and isn't very smart - he works in a fairly casual public sector office so never wears a suit and tie.
I'd love some suggestions on where to start? I guess we're aiming for casual but not so scruffy!

I'm not super trendy either (but 10 years younger than him) and don't tend to wear heels but sometimes I feel we look a bit mismatched on nights out - I like dresses and jumpsuits and coated jeans with ankle boots and a "nice top", tend to shop in Topshop/New Look/River Island. Not sure what the equivalent is?

Bumping.....

My DH has mentioned that he thinks we should ‘revamp’ his wardrobeShock

I don’t know where to start!!

Trousers from Jigsaw, a collared shirt, cufflinks, cashmere jumper and chelsea boots or trainers

icemelting · 29/11/2019 19:45

Cuff links for casual wearHmm

No idea, think my husband will be in jeans/band t-shirt/lumberjack shirt forever. He scrubs up well in a suit for weddings and funerals, but the thought of him in Jigsaw trousers, collared shirt with cufflinks and chelsea boots is just hysterical. He'd literally look as if he was going to a fancy dress party as Tim Nice But Dim.

I made DP watch Queer Eye with me while I was sick earlier this year, and he picked up some good tips from Tan Grin

TheWashingMachine · 29/11/2019 19:55

My husband always wears cufflinks. I might add his jumpers are all holey

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/11/2019 19:57

msrinky ha, mine too, although he does wear trousers/shirt/proper shoes for work.

I bought mine a few nice v-neck jumpers from Uniqlo, which he wears over a striped t-shirts (mainly from Topman). That looks good instead of a shirt, with dark jeans (Levi’s) and decent trainers - he has dozens of pairs of Adidas. I actually like him in band t-shirts!

pinkstar01 · 29/11/2019 19:57

Fitted jumpers with slim trousers/jeans...he's quite lean so likes to make sure things are tailored and fit well, shoes wise he wears brogues/trainers/espadrilles depending on the season

charliesp · 29/11/2019 19:59

Button down shirt, really nice dark denim jeans or casual trousers, blazer and/or classic jacket, loafers or smart trainers.

Ohyesiam · 29/11/2019 20:02

Jeans, black or indigo are fine, but the hoody can be taken over by knitwear. T K Maxx has some great men’s knitwear.
Shirt or t shirt underneath, Chelsea boots et voila!

Legomadx2 · 29/11/2019 20:26

Your husband sounds likes mine @TheWashingMachine

OP I share your pain. Mine does not give a shit and wears the exact same clothes that he wore 20 years ago, and will undoubtedly wear 20 years hence.

Spoke does really nice trousers that are well cut but don't scare husbands.

Sooverthemill · 29/11/2019 20:36

My DH is older but very similar ( even job). I buy all his clothes, Boden, weird fish, occasional fat face shirt, M&S and John Lewis. Cords, jeans, chinos with good quality t shirts, henleys, polo shirts and cotton/ linen shirts. Linen and cotton jackets and tweed jackets for winter. Decent coat from to maxx

Sooverthemill · 29/11/2019 20:36

Btw he asks me to buy them! I don't mind at all. We shop online as not near shops

Jumbojem · 29/11/2019 20:47

My 40 something other half wears polo shirts from gap/ h&m type places, or striped t shirts from same places, checked shirts. He branched out in the summer and bought a bright shirt with a parrot pattern, looked great with dark blue shorts. Bottoms wise he wears chinos or cotton trousers in a jogger style (from h&m). He won't wear jeans as finds them uncomfortable. He has a few nicer jumpers. Suits are for interviews, weddings and funerals only for him.

NCbecauseitspersonal · 29/11/2019 20:48

Chinos in summer, moleskin jeans in winter, bright shirts (floral or stripey), never a tie, never trainers except for sport. That’s the good bit. Now read on.

Nice woollen or cashmere jumpers which he ruins by doing the gardening in them, or DIY.

He has one nice summer jacket and some ancient winter ones.

Really awful ancient handknit hats and scarves that pre-date me, although we have been together for 23 years or so...

Sooverthemill · 29/11/2019 20:57

Oh yes my DH doesn't own a tie. He had to get one from a charity shop to go to a posh do earlier this year. He donated it back the following Monday

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 29/11/2019 21:21

Mine would walk around in rags if I didn’t lay down the law now and again. Dark jeans (French Connection etc) from TK Maxx, plain dark T shirts, dark sweaters, sturdy lace up boots. I am trying to get him to part with an extremely tatty and shabby leather jacket that an old man gave him once and get him into something a bit smarter there too.
