Incognito braces - help!

I have taken the plunge and had Incognito braces fitted behind my upper front teeth. They are like train track braces but they sit behind the teeth instead of on the fronts.

They’ve been in for about 48 hours and fuck me they are uncomfortable and awkward. My speech is fine, the odd lisp but my Dad didn’t notice on the phone last night. But they just feel so intrusive and quite painful. My teeth hurt and my tongue is quite sore. I’ve been given some wax to put over any sharp edges which I have done but it’s all pretty shit.

Has anyone else had these? Does it get better? The dentist said it will be a period of adjustment, but when? I don’t think I can take a year of this.

It will get less painful. I’ve had braces a long times ago and it was a bit of a shock for a week or so and each time they were tightened after that.
Don’t give up, a year is nothing, think of the end goal. If you removed them now, you might regret it.

I don’t have that type, I have ClearCorrect which are similar to Invisalign (hard plastic which sits over the teeth). However when I first got them my mouth and tongue were really sore where they rubbed. It was bad for a few days but then got better and now I hardly notice them. your mouth will get used to it and it will get better!

Oh God I hope so. It’s so uncomfortable at the moment. I don’t want to give up but I didn’t expect my tongue to be sore and for them to feel so “in the way”. In fairness they are completely invisible from the outside and you’d never know I had them. It had better be worth it!

I've not had braces, but I've had a tooth rebuilt and have had crowns. Yes, your tongue can really get sore for a while until it learns to accept this strange thing intruding in your mouth. Your tongue is very soft and delicate, and suddenly something new is touching it all the time. And it's really difficult not to explore that sensation, which of course increases the chafing.

Use the wax, rinse your mouth with warm salt water, and, well, just wait it out, really. I find it takes me at least two weeks to get used to a new thing in my mouth, and for my tongue to leave it alone.

I had the original type of braces on the front of my teeth. God I hated them, they were painful, hurt my mouth. I couldn’t eat for pain. After a month or so I got used to them. They hurt when tightened, it does ease off. Honestly, when you see your teeth slowly getting straighter, you’ll be so happy! You won’t regret them!!

I have those ones put on the inside of my teeth just after a pair of the more traditional train track type on the outside. This was about 18 years ago when I was a teenager so I don't really remember them being uncomfortable at the time. But by the time they were installed I was very used to all that metal in my mouth. I still have them in now and most of the time I don't notice they're even there but occasionally I catch my tongue on a sharp bit. I think the glue stuff is wearing away after all this time.

it will settle down in a few weeks. Paracetamol is your friend

Things seem to have improved slightly. i just need to learn to stop poking at them with my tongue. Dental wax is definitely my newest, bestest and most favourite friend,

I did decide that a quick tcp gargle before bed might help things last night, which was a new experience in pain. I was quite surprised that there are no dents in the washbasin where I grabbed hold of it.
