Shopping in the usa

Apart from New York has anyone any suggestions on where’s great for shopping in America. I want to to save hard and treat myself to 5-7 days of shopping but don’t know where to consider. I’ve done NY so want somewhere different. Or is NY the place to go ? I’d be travelling alone.

I prefer Chicago to NY for shopping.

What are you looking for, high end designer or outlet malls? Remember that prices aren't much lower in the US now, and often aren't lower at all.

LizziesTwin · 17/11/2019 14:38

& prices don’t include sales tax. When we went to Chicago a couple of years it was more expensive than London (you can look up the sales tax for each city/state online).

Somewhere with low/no sales tax?? Definitely not Chicago! It’s a great city to visit but sales tax is high. Tbh with the current exchange rate there’s very little you can’t buy for cheaper in the UK so whilst I know it’s not as fun, I would plan a holiday to the US and shop at home.

5-7 days?! Wow, that's a LOT of shopping! What are you looking to buy? The usual clothes and shoes or something else?

taytotayto111 · 17/11/2019 15:43

Clothes and shoes. I don’t care about it being cheaper I just want the experience really. I like the designer outlets

I assume you've already been to Woodbury Common if you've been to NY? If not, go there.

Alternatively, look at going to Florida and visiting Sawgrass Mills.

I must admit I don't really understand what you're wanting to do if you don't care about price. We have shops in the UK and we have outlets here too. The experience is no different. And I write that as someone who's spent a lot of time in the U.S.

taytotayto111 · 17/11/2019 18:23

To me the experience is different and it’s time away from a high pressured job which is why I do it.

Vegas is great for outlets.

Bicester is a lot closer!

Expressedways · 17/11/2019 19:59

I don’t get spending money on plane tickets and hotel to buy clothes you could have bought cheaper at home but if you really want the full experience then go to Mall of America in Minnesota.

Shenanagins · 17/11/2019 21:18

My oh used to swear by the outlets just over the state line in New Jersey. I’ve never been myself but you might want to have a look online to see if they suit .

partysong · 17/11/2019 22:39

OP I totally get what you mean, I would love to do this!

It's been years but Florida malls and outlets used to be good when I went (and good weather!)

I also enjoyed shopping in Chicago but it's got a very similar feel to New York.

Personally I hated Vegas, just found it all a bit seedy.

California is probably worth considering? But the flight would be longer

Sounds exciting, have fun wherever you go

Does it need to be the USA? Paris? Milan? Dubai?

Palaver1 · 18/11/2019 06:07

The difference is the styles and variety lots of items you’d get there wont be sold here even in the shops that we have like Asda the items they have a lot of. Designs and styles the British shops do not have.
Be aware you will be charged custom duties on arrival.

CointreauVersial · 18/11/2019 10:36

If you are going to NY, then definitely hop over the state border and go to the outlets in New Jersey (Jersey Mills). No sales tax, so about 10% cheaper than NY, so the mall is seriously massive. You just know people fly in, go shopping, and fly out again, because there are loads of shops near the entrance selling suitcases.

If you are going to the West coast, the best mall we visited was at Camarillo, just up the coast from LA. So huge we had to drive to the far side of it.

But bargains in short supply this year with the dismal exchange rate.

queenofarles · 18/11/2019 16:06

I prefer LA to NY,
But for the best shopping experience it has to be Milan, Florence or Paris. Specially at this time of year. Everything looks sparkly and pretty! Plus the food in all these cities plus hotels are just luxurious, you probably won’t find that in the States.
