Shampoo bars

How long does it take to get rid of that horrible waxy feeling??

I'm on day 2 of using shampoo and conditioner bars (have to wash my hair daily) and I feel like I've not washed it for weeks

I don't get that with my current one! Using Gruum one for blonde hair. I haven't previously tried them but really impressed so far.

I've got the Friendly Soap Company ones and my hair feels like a candle. It's also horrible to actually wash my hair, the shampoo bar makes it feel so dry and minging when I'm rinsing it. I'm going to give it another few days but I'm really unimpressed so far.

I don't find that with shampoo bars at all. I have been using the lush ones for months and no waxiness.

Conditioner bars on the other hand.... just don't get on with those at all. So i'm still using bottle conditioner. Still, switching to solid shampoo and real soap is reducing the bottles by two thirds. Probably more, as I went through shower gel and shampoo quicker than conditioner.

I found that I only got that sticky feeling for a few days when I transitioned from using normal shampoo and I don’t get it at all now unless I have to use normal shampoo.

FaintlyMacabre · 17/11/2019 13:44

I have the Friendly Soap one and the secret is a vinegar rinse- I use about 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar per cup of water. That makes all the difference and the sticky feeling will go.
DDs hair is very fine and used to tangle horribly no matter what we used, now it’s washed once a week and stays shiny and tangle free.

BikeRunSki · 17/11/2019 13:57

I have found that I don’t need conditioner with the Friendly Soap shampoo bar. My hair is very dry and curly, I didn’t get the waxy feeling you are talking about.

PiedImperial · 17/11/2019 15:44

Friendly soap shampoo bars left my hair feeling horrid as well, even with an acv rinse.

I switched to a different shampoo bar brand, and my hair was fine.

So I think it's just about trying different ones and finding one that works for you straight away.

JorisBonson · 18/11/2019 11:04

@FaintlyMacabre do you make it up in advance and keep it in the bathroom? What do you keep it in? I'm trying to figure out what vestibule to use so I don't just look like I'm keeping a jug of piss in the bathroom

OP posts:
FaintlyMacabre · 18/11/2019 18:12

I’m afraid the jug of piss look is almost inevitable. I make up a solution in a glass jar- about 50:50 vinegar:water, then when I use it I dilute it further in a plastic measuring jug and just pour it over. This is very inexact and I’m sure there’ll be websites out there with the optimum dilution ratio but my method seems fine so far Smile

I'm using soho soap company and have found the aloe shampoo and conditioner bars fab and I've got long red colour processed hair

FenellaMaxwell · 18/11/2019 18:17

I use lush and have never had this

FaintlyMacabre · 18/11/2019 19:37

I think - though someone please correct me if I’m wrong- that the Lush bars are regular shampoo made with sodium laurel sulphate whereas the friendly company bars are actual soap which is chemically different. I used the lush bars for years and they’re very good, if you’re just wanting to reduce plastic waste and don’t mind about SLS. I stopped using them because of the price. Also my local shop sells the Friendly bars so I like to support them.

TroysMammy · 18/11/2019 19:43

I use a bicarb rinse before using the bar, lathered up using an exfoliating glove then finish off with an apple cider vinegar rinse. Don't use plain cider vinegar you buy for cooking.

RaininSummer · 18/11/2019 19:44

I tried several bars and couldn't get the waxy hair to go. I gave up sadly as it was getting expensive. Have started using faith in nature for now but it still means some bottles
