Best shampoo/conditioner for psoriasis

Wasn't sure where to post this.

I have psoriasis, luckily not visible, on my scalp. My hair is also prone to greasiness after 2 days. By the end of the second day I want to scratch my scalp off. Tried head and shoulders but found it ineffective. TGel worked a little but wasn't great and had the added bonus of making my hair feel awful and smell a bit nasty.

Does anyone know of a decent shampoo/conditioner or range which might work?

Thanks

I've heard really good things about the body shop ginger shampoo and conditioner for scalp conditions. And it smells lovely !

ToothlessIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/11/2019 21:26

Ooh I'll have to look at that one - being body shop shouldn't break the bank either! Thanks Mojito

Selsun. Amazing stuff. And Lush's Soak & Float shampoo bar used to be ok for non flareup times (not sure if it still exists).

Your doctor will prescribe a lotion

My DH has really bad psoriasis on his scalp. He’s had it for years then last year started using lush shampoo bars and lush super balm. The prescription treatment seems to work so much better after this.

luckygreeneyes · 16/11/2019 22:15

Currently using the honey shampoo bar

ToothlessIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/11/2019 09:34

Thanks all,

The lotion my doctor prescribed works but makes my hair awful, and shampoo/conditioner then makes my scalp itchy again, so more interested in finding hair products who don't exacerbate it. It's only mild but the itching and subsequent flaking drive me mad.

I'll definitely look into a few of these!

Have you tried polytar? Used with a decent moisturiser that was ok on my hair.

Aveeno have a shampoo which might be worth a try as long as it's not too greasy.

MustardScreams · 17/11/2019 09:44

I have terrible scalp psoriasis. I use Betnovate lotion which isn’t greasy/oily like most psoriasis treatment. And doesn’t leave my hair feeling too grim.

I then avoid all shampoos with sulphates as these really trigger a flare up. I generally use solid shampoos as they are super gentle and then a deep conditioner avoiding the scalp.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/11/2019 12:09

I have flare ups ( it is in our family but it's meant to skip a generation Hmm )

I'm using Aveda Shampure as my Holy Grail with Paul Mitchell The Conditioner but when it flares I use Body Shop Ginger + the Conditioner . It only works for my scalp using the conditioner as well .

I was going to say TGel!!!

I used to have psoriasis on my scalp, but it weirdly cleared up after I had children.

RandomMess · 17/11/2019 12:15

I was coming to say there is great thread somewhere and KitKat has linked to it!

Trial and error everyone is different.

ToothlessIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/11/2019 13:38

BikeRunSki - mine only really flared up AFTER I had children. So not only are they giving me grey hairs, they're giving me a scabby head Grin

My other half uses baby cradle cap shampoo and it is the only thing that works.

BikeRunSki · 17/11/2019 14:00

@ToothlessIsMySpiritAnimal, oh no!! The flip side is that my children ruined my teeth!

Allthebubbles · 17/11/2019 15:41

I have some scalp psoriasis and generally I find sulphate free shampoos are best. Coal tar was the worst for me, I felt like I was allergic to it.
When it was bad ( now it just kind of sits there) I found applying oil, massaging it in and leaving for an hour or so then enabled me to comb out the plaques, that helped quite a lot.

borntobequiet · 17/11/2019 17:23

Nizoral. Just wish they did a conditioner too.

Silverstreaks · 18/11/2019 13:30

Have you started with the basics of avoiding SLS and silicone? My psoriasis is relatively mild on my scalp but both of those irritate my scalp to the point of pulling large scales off, scratching and bleeding.
Green People is good for non irritant shampoos and conditioners. Followed by a vinegar rinse if you have hard water.

INeedNewShoes · 18/11/2019 13:34

I'm in a similar place. I've tried multiple medicated shampoos with no noticeable improvement and absolutely decimating my hair in the process.

In the run up to this current flare (which has been ongoing for over a year) I had been using SLS free, silicone free, parabens free shampoo and conditioner since 2012 so I don't think that's the only answer.

I flit between thinking I may as well stop the medicated shampoo as it isn't improving the psoriasis and its damaging my hair and being terrified to stop the medicated shampoo in case it is actually doing something and my scalp might end up even worse without it.

PuppyMonkey · 18/11/2019 13:42

I’ve had scalp psoriasis 40 odd years and most of the things suggested here and the other thread posted work for a bit. Then stop. The one I’ve been using for four or five years now though is Philip Kingsley itchy flaky scalp. Fingers crossed it’s my cure. Expensive though.

PuppyMonkey · 18/11/2019 13:44

Sulphate free shampoos made mine worse.Confused

Lillipops · 18/11/2019 13:49

Ask your Dr for Alphosyl shampoo or you can buy it in Boots. I've had Psoriasis for 24 years with various flare ups and have always used Alphosyl it's the only thing that keeps my scalp clear. Unfortunately I'm having a major flare up just now due to a change in medication, had to stop taking Acetretin because it didn't work and my hair was falling out at an alarming rate! Anyone got any tips for increasing hair growth? 😭😭😭

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/11/2019 13:51

TGel does a clear shampoo that my husband says works very well. Bit sad really because I love the smell of the original.
