Red nose control!

As I get older I seem to have more and more of an issue with my nose looking red and a bit shiny all the time. I basically have quite good skin for my age, a bit dry, very pale, with the occasional spot or two (I'm in early 40s), but people increasingly ask me if I have cold when I don't, or my kids point out my nose looks red.

At work I wear makeup, but the redness seems to come through pretty quickly. I should point out I am quite lazy and not good at applying makeup - I just stick on foundation, bit of bronzer to stop me looking half-dead, eyeshadow, mascara, blusher, in the space of about 90 seconds. So I'm not dealing with any complicated layering or blending - but would powder help with the nose issue? Should I go for a heavier base? I tend to use relatively light ones. Any advice greatly appreciated.

You want a green concealer to put on first. I have a red nose from reynauds (so it's either red or purple) and when I can be bothered I put green stuff on under everything else.

Could you have rosacea or anything, is your nose hot or cold to the touch? I'm super pale and have rosacea, my nose is either freezing cold and pinky coloured because its cold, or it flushes and is really warm to the touch and red. My nose only ever seems to be normal coloured when I'm in a room at the perfect temperature. Sad

Can I ask hawk can raynauds make you flush? I'm sure i have this, my hands and feet are always freezing cold even in the summer but sometimes they go red and burn. Confused

I do have rosacea on my nose and cheeks my cheeks are generally under control but again my nose is always freezing cold but randomly burns and goes red like my toes, my ears are also always freezing too but they burn and go red sometimes if I touch them. I sound really attractive. Grin

Thanks, I wondered about green colour corrector. Could be rosacea, it doesn't show up anywhere else though.

It could be rosacea. I have it and certain things will trigger it. It's taken me a while to work out what those things are and they are different for different people.

For me it's stress, hormones (including hormonal contraception), red wine, the sun and lots of vigorous exercise.

I also use some products by The Ordinary, which I feel have really helped my skin. They are Alpha Arbutin & HA, Niacinamide & Zinc and Azaleic Acid.

Cover it up by all means, but not to totally freak you out, but left untreated it can end up being permanent and disfiguring, so it might be worth seeing a GP and / dermatologist about it, just in case it is rosacea. It shouldn't just be left to sort itself out.

Mind you red nose alone doesn't sound like severe rosacea anyway, even if it is that.

But I would get checked out.

Just to add if it weeps then antibiotics help

Deathraystare · 17/11/2019 11:37

Be careful with the green colour it give give a grey cast to your colour, plus if your foundation rubs off you could en up like Kermit! I always use yellow instead. Benefit did a 'bluff stick in yellow (I had warmish Ivory skin anyway - apart fro bits of red on my cheeks.

Hawkmoth · 17/11/2019 13:32

I dont know about flushing. Sometimes I have bright red cheeks and a cold purple nose then I warm up and have bright red cheeks and a massive red nose.

Woopdewoop · 17/11/2019 13:40

I have a bit of rosacea and have been using la Roche posay Rosaliac intense serum twice daily for years now. It really make a difference if you keep using it. I won be without it

Woopdewoop · 17/11/2019 13:41

Apologies for spelling getting bumped about in the car!

Echobelly · 17/11/2019 14:46

Will look up some more about rosacea - it's not a really bright red but I think shows up because I'm otherwise so pale!

Rosacea.

Try wearing a higher factor sunscreen on your face all year round, cut out alcohol and try to minimise stress. Also see your GP for an antibiotic gel.

You'll have to give it a few months to see any benefits though.

BeatriceTheBeast · 17/11/2019 16:27

The pictures you see online of the very bright, red skin are extreme cases / a specific type of rosacea. It doesn't always look as obvious as that.

I think you are right to look into it.

I don't have to cut out alcohol entirely btw. I still love wine, just not red! Mine hasn't flared up in ages except very briefly when I stupidly started taking the pill again and I drink white wine fairly frequently. I also eat spicy food and have hot showers. These just aren't my main triggers, which are hormones, stress, red wine, the sun and things like doing a lot of running in warmer weather. Oh god and saunas/ jacuzzis. I am like a lobster in them!
