Flat footwear with midi/maxi skirts?

I really like the look of flowing/a-line long/midi skirts (Pics to show what I mean) and have my eye on a couple but I'm not sure how to style them without a massive heel to avoid frumpiness?

Do trainers and tights look weird? Chelsea boots? DMs? Would a midi or a longer skirt look better with flats (I am petite)? I love them with 70s-style stacked-heel boots but it's just not a practical everyday look for me.

I wear these Hogl boots with long flowing skirts and I get lots of compliments. They're also super-comfy and didn't need ANY breaking in (how great is that?!)

I can no longer wear any heel so I have flat over knee or knee high suede boots which work well. I like the mix of textures. I'm short and wear satin midis which come up slightly longer on me but I like that

Those boots are fab, HundredMilesAnHour ! I'm thinking Doc Martens might be a suitable cheaper alterntive. I can see that the contrast of the chunky, agressive boots with the floaty skirt would work well.

BloomedAgain I hadn't considered tall flat boots, thanks, I like the sound of over-knee suede ones. I'm also short and like the longer-midi length of midi skirts on me too.

I mostly wear mine with trainers, I don't think it looks odd with tights. I also wear them with loafers, ballet flats and boots. These sorts of skirts are really versatile imo

Hogl boots are fab. They're not really known in the UK but they're a mid range Austrian brand. I have 4 pairs of their boots now and they're so comfortable. Not one pair has ever needed breaking in which I think is incredible. I've not had even a hint of rubbing. I also love that their combat boots zip up so no faffing around with the laces.

I have this pair below and they look like they'd be absolute bastards to break in (and I admit to being apprehensive when I ordered them) but no, they were comfy straight away for my 25 min walk to work:

What sort of tights do you wear? I'm struggling with the cold weather/ankle boot issue.

I don't wear any tights but I'm in London so it's not cold (yet). Plus I'm from Lancashire so my family would probably disinherit me for wearing tights in November.

Although I did recently treat myself to these fabulous tights from Wolford as an early Christmas present. They're made from recycled fishing nets (I suspect a fishing net is cheaper to buy than the tights!):

HundredMilesAnHour Not cold in London?! You are hardier than me (softy southerner), I'm in Italy atm and it's 6-7 degrees warmer, but I still want tights!

OverByYer Those are nice and they also look very comfy.

I like heels but never wear them with midi length. I think heels make them look frumpy and trainers or flat boots look much better.

Another shorty here I love midi skirts too, they come longer as I am only 5 foot3in but I think they look better.

@LeeMiller I find flat suede boots sleek and warm too.

Trainers or pointy flats for me. I wear nude tights with no shame, if you get matt tights in the right colour then they just look like bare legs tbh.

I have two pairs of Marc Fisher faux suede boots (one taupe, one black) which are very comfortable. I also have an old pair of Stuart Weitzman real suede boots which are worn out. A friend swears by Clarks Caddy Belle boots and I may get some.
If it's very cold I wear tights and thermal long socks. The good thing is you can take a layer off if you get too hot, and no one can tell. Depending on the cut of a skirt, sometimes faux suede sits better as it tends to be thinner than real suede.

I love midi dress + Stan Smiths, but am a total wuss re the cold school run mornings...

Wear leggings that are shorter than the skirt or dress, if you want bare ankles with trainers. Cheap leggings work fine.

Daisy62 good idea but I just can't cope with bare ankles in winter, even though I think it looks better (there's also a jeans thread about this).

I've been pondering all of these problems above - I love trainers with midis but it's suddenly FREEZING (even in London)

Have been wearing cut off tights to below the knee til now, but it's got so cold I need to switch to opaques.

I am also hopeful that nudes under a midi will be less detectable so passably ok......?

Black or coloured opaques are fine IRL. We don't have to copy the retailer's styling exactly.

Am laughing at the OP, we were in Italy at half term and despite it being in the mid 20s everyone was dressed in jeans and coats. I really stuck out in my floaty summer dresses!
