Damage to new coat - so upsetting !

I know that in the great scheme of things this is a non problem, but I bought a new fake fur coat as a treat to myself. I only wore it the second time today and as I was leaving work I noticed that some of the fur at the back had been matted where a backpack with my laptop must have rubbed against it in the morning. So upsetting as my new fluffy coat is no longer pristine... 😢

I have brushed it gently and now it looks better but it’s not the same! And it was rather expensive...

Please make me feel better by saying that other people will, probably not notice and share your mew purchase disasters!

I had the same issue with my work rucksack slightly scuffing the back of my new coat so I feel your pain! Would love to find a rucksack that doesn’t do it!

iwantavuvezela · 12/11/2019 18:02

Is it dry cleanable - that may help, or gentle wash should rectify it.

Notcontent · 12/11/2019 18:05

Thank you. It did actually cross my mind this morning that rucksack plus new coat might not be a good combination but then just went ahead anyway. Lesson learned I suppose...

Iwant - it’s dry clean only and yes, that might help, although I am not sure, because I think it’s almost as though the friction has changed the texture of the fibres. But hopefully it’s only noticeable to me....

I bought an expensive Hobbs coat and the collar has gone bobbly after only a few wears. I'm very disappointed.

thespellhasbeenbroken123 · 12/11/2019 18:19

Nothing worse than new clothes getting ruined
First world probs and all but it's just shit

I have a new coat and I'm actually scared to wear it!

I'm sure no one will even notice op

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 12/11/2019 18:21

I wreck everything i own and am accepting of this, therefore i happily buy and wear Mulberry bags, Chanel sunnies etc but accept that they will look well worn very soon after purchase. It also means I'm very happy to buy second hand. My DM on the other hand has ancient cream cashmere she has worn regularly in pristine condition Confused

ilovecherries · 12/11/2019 18:28

Oh, that’s a shame. No one but you will notice though but I know it takes the gloss off. I’m still in bitter about splashing bleach on a pair of NYDJ while cleaning some other sods skid marks off the toilet.

VeniVidiVoxi · 12/11/2019 18:31

Sorry if it's totally a non-starter but are you totally sure it's fake fur? What you describe sounds like felting, which happens to natural fibres but not man-made (I teach felting, it's a real swine if synthetic fibres get mistaken for wool etc because they don't felt). I read somewhere that fur is now cheaper than fake but can't remember the source.

Notcontent · 12/11/2019 18:39

Thanks all. I guess, looking in the bright side, it’s better to get wear out of it, even if it gets slightly worn looking in the process, than the other thing I tend to do - which is to put things away for “best” and then hardly wear them.

And yes, it’s definitely fake fur.

No use for your coat I'm afraid, but for Flora's bobbly coat try a fabric shaver. I've got a Phillips one I bought from Amazon for about £13 and it's fantastic on bobbled coats and jumpers etc - gives them a new lease of life.

Feel for you with your coat. Sure it won't be noticeable to anyone else. Hope you still enjoy wearing it!

cathyandclare · 12/11/2019 18:49

DD had a matted faux fur coat. I brushed it with a soft bristled dog brush and it came up a treat!

Looks much glossier and smoother than Ddog!

EskewedBeef · 12/11/2019 18:53

I think you could get the fibres free again with a Tangle Teezer type brush, and maybe a bit of fabric conditioner.

Lhastingsmua · 12/11/2019 19:06

Agreed with trying an animal fur brush instead of a human hair brush.

I have one for my (faux) fur rug and it does a MUCH better job than any hair brush. The bristles are thicker/coarser/denser and more tightly packed so have more of an impact.

Maybe even try a beard brush if you have one in your house. Or a boar bristle brush.

Notcontent · 12/11/2019 19:11

Thanks for the tips! I found a foot brush in the depths of my bathroom cupboard and it dos look better... needless to say I will never be wearing it with a rucksack again!

Also I just put my cream faux fur coat which says dry clean only in a machine Wool wash at 30 degrees with Woolite.

Came out just fine....

pumpkintree · 12/11/2019 19:26

@carrots555. How are you drying it? Be careful as they shrink normally after a machine wash, if you can make sure you reshape it.

mumwon · 12/11/2019 19:48

re shrinking clothing - off subject but it remined me of something dm told me - during the war my than young unmarried dm bought a new dress which she thought was lovely. She wore it outside & it rained, the material shrank & became really, really short & tight, very embarrassing for my modest dm.

ActualFemale · 12/11/2019 19:52

My puppy managed to get my week old docs and chee one to bits. My own fault because I knew she had a thing for shoes (only my shoes too!) and was showing them to a friend and forgot to put them away again, hadn't danced puppies crate properly when I popes to corner shop and in the ten mins it took to go buy some milk, one of my boots was fucked.

MilliiMoo · 12/11/2019 21:52

VeniVidiVoxi definitely happens to synthetics. I have had teddy rugs and where you walk on it the fluff becomes matted and can't be unmarried. Awful

MilliiMoo · 12/11/2019 21:54

Unmatted
