Hair extensions

I think I want to get tape extensions mainly for density, and a bit of length. Has anyone had these - what do you think?

  • How much did you pay?
  • How close can these be placed near your hairline? The hair around my face is a bit wispy/damaged so I’d like it to look more dense/blunt.
  • Did you find these extensions damaging to your natural hair? I’m thinking of wearing extensions for a few months whilst my natural hair grows.
  • How often do you get them refitted?

Tapes are one of the least damaging type to have, damage occurs with incorrect sectioning causing uneven tension on the hair, pulling when brushing and during removal.
I would not place any extension further forward than the ear as the hair is often weaker there also more visible and can feel annoying when placed there. I have no idea of cost as I can do my own (trained) but dont think as expensive as other types, I would not recommend keeping them any longer than a month as natural hair growth can be uneven. It's not difficult to do your own with help just make sure sections are straight and even, and hair not conditioned beforehand. Plenty of demos on YouTube. Also some hair types will not hold extensions, usually fine hair does, tapes hair and remover are all widely available.

Thank you! I do have fine hair, is this one of the hair types that won’t hold the tapes very well?

Fine hair usually is ok mine is very fine and have no problem with slipping

I’ve had a full head of micro ring extensions for about 2 years following some hair loss and my hair becoming much thinner and finer overall. During this time it’s grown out from a short bob to below shoulder length and the patch of hair loss is growing out. With careful colouring and olaplex treatments, my hair is now in much better condition than when I started, but I think that I’ll keep the extensions for now as the thickness is so nice. They cost me between 350 and 700 every 3 months or so. My hair is very fine so we can’t go too close to the hairline as the bonds are difficult to hide, more so as they grow out. I’ve learnt to style in different ways to give the look of fullness but it will not be the same as real thick hair.

Thank you. Micro rings sound like a suitable option too, from what I’ve read they aren’t very damaging to your hair.

I’m a bit upset with my hair, it’s essentially lost 50% of density just over the last 2 months. I had a full head of highlights so there was a bit of breakage, but it’s mainly falling out from the root due to stress and low iron/ferritin. The difference is actually staggering. I’m a bit worried that extensions might add to the loss as my hair is in a weird state right now.

I would be wary of putting extensions in now, any extension puts added weight and stress on the root of the hair. I would work on getting condition back, black castor oil is good for this, put it on at night. Iron levels can take a few months to recover in regards to the hair. You may find as iron levels improve there will be a lot of new growth.

If you're near London I'd recommend Mark Glenn. They specialise in fitting extensions for women with hair loss.

I had extensions from them for two years during which time my natural hair grew back until I felt comfortable enough to go without. For those two years my hair looked the best it ever has. I got so many compliments including from random strangers. I miss my extensions Smile

Find a great extensionist and get some advice. My hair was in a terrible state with some loss due to stress and breaking off from bleach. My hairdresser also colours and treats my hair as part of my appointment so my hair is in as good condition as it would have been if I grew it out. It's made the process so much less painful. There is only so much that is possible if your hair is fine, but it's addictive once you start.

Op, I had really issues with my hair. Over treated, kept breaking and didn't grow.

I got keratin bond extensions for 3 months and my hair has never been healthier it grew a good 4 inches while they were in and they don't damage your hair if you look after them properly.

Mine cost about £450.00

The only downside is you can reuse the hair like you can with micro rings.

If you in east London area let me know and I'll pass on their details

I have really fine hair and wanted the same as you extra length and body . I initially went for tapes as advised but they were so noticeable under my fine hair , if the wind blew you could see them and they would slip out so easily . I then changed to micro rings and they have been brilliant , they grow out and I do lose a few but my hair is much better for them and much less noticeable
