over 50's make up help

Hi there! I have always been quite low maintenance with the make up, usually just wearing mascara and a nice red lipstick. Always worked well for me, until I turned 50, oestrogen levels plumet, and skin starts sagging and creping. I still held my nerve, thinking I looked ok, but then saw some terrible photo's of me where I looked (facially) like Nora Batty.
SO I need some help. Where should I go? I went to Boots and Superdrug, everything seems to be glittery and holo, and full of weird products I've never heard of. I used to use Laura Mercier and Nars, but even my favourite products have been discontinued. I feel like I need to start making an effort but not sure where to start. Do I need to go to a make up counter (Laura Mercier?) of should I pay for a make up lesson with someone?
any advice would be very appreciated

I would go for a make up lesson. I have heard good things about Bobbi brown lessons but others may know more. You can YouTube but you want to see stuff on you in the flesh

I’m in my 40s but I’ve recently switched to a lighter foundation for similar reasons. I use Mac face and body foundation, it’s very light and semi sheer. I know people say to avoid powder as you get older but try a dust of Hourglass dim light to finish.
Mac do free sample pots so you don’t need to spend and commit, and usually get about a weeks worth. The hourglass powder is £££ but you can buy mini sizes from space NK

I’m 49 and wanting to refresh my make up look. ( and to simplify it). I felt I was looking a bit jaded. I haven’t had a lesson so much but I did go to Bobbi Brown and get my make up done and bought some of their products. ( and threw a load of old ones out) I would definitely go back when I have more time and have a proper lesson. I have also had a make over with Space NK previously and enjoyed that too.. I like Laura Mercier and Chantacaille. ( spelling?) and would be keen to see what new brands they have. I would definitely do that to get a sense of direction before buying random products from Boots and the like.

I am 50s and crap at make up !

I love the Chanel Les Beiges range and Bobbi Briown

This year I had a make up lesson with an independent person and whilst it was ok I felt that they used too many products and took too long and I felt a bit overdone

Bobbi Brown in right stores I have enjoyed

Also bought Hourglass Dim from Sspace NK and like it a lot - bought omlove pppp

Do you know any teenage girls? My teen dd did my make up a while ago and it was amazing! I specified minimal contouring as it seems to be such a thing these days. And I asked her to make sure she didn’t go overboard on my eyebrows which she didn’t. Hours watching YouTube make up tutorials have definitely paid off!

I'm 48 and find Charlotte tilbury foundation and especially her bronzer/highlighter very flattering. It's expensive but when I wear it, friends comment that I'm looking very well! They dont comment when Im wearing my everyday MaxFactor! I find C.T makeup makes my skin look fresh and dewy which is harder to achieve as I nudge closer to 50. I also have started using Hyaluronic drops from The Ordinary, and my skin has definitely got fresher!

Post 50 less is definitely more.
I pay a lot good skin care. I think things like Vitamin C, retinoids help. I recently went to a dermal therapist - more in depth training than a beauty therapist and my skin has definitely improved taking her advice.
Makeup wise then a tinted moisturiser is better than a foundation which sits in lines. I tint my eyelashes so I avoid mascara ( contact lens wearer) and my eyebrows are done by beauty therapist.

Thanks everyone.
Some really helpful suggestions. I think I could get away with a nice new eye look, and maybe a tinted moisturiser? I don't really like foundation, and would rather not wear it. Actually I did try a Chantecaille foundation once which was like a gel which was great, so maybe I could try again.
John Gustavson used to do a make up consultancy in Fenwicks, but not sure if he's still there. I am quite good at applying make up, but just need some inspiration.

@sarf I think having a make up lesson would give you inspiration as they know the new products and techniques that you may not have caught up with. I really think it would be a springboard

Yes @soover I’m convinced Grin
Just need to find someone/where.

Check out Look Fabulous Forever - great videos and their primer is amazing.

malovitt · 08/11/2019 07:59

I second Look Fabulous Forever primer - they also sell a great gel which stops lipstick bleed. Really works.

I can recommend the Trinny London BB cream.
Also, LFF eyeshadows are all matte.
Use a liquid or cream blush. Daniel Sandler are great and Glossier.

Dark tight line your upper lids (upper waterline) and use nude liner on lower waterline.
