Box dye for roots that actually works

I have had a hairdressing disaster which I can't afford to get fixed (hairdresser wouldn't change it at the time as they think it looks fine) but I hate it.
My hair has been dyed a reddish-brown which I hate and really drains the colour from my face.
I bought a Clairol 'Natural instincts' box dye from boots - but it has made absolutely no difference.
I only need to dye the roots an inch or two so that the reddish colour is away from my face (the rest of my hair is balayage and I don't mind it so much) back to my natural colour of very dark brown.
I don't have any greys but maybe the box dyes designed to colour greys are stronger and might over-rise the red tones?
Anyone got any recommendations?

I've no idea about specific to roots but I've just used John Frieda foam colour all over and love it. It's the most natural looking colour I've used and very easy to apply

I second the John Frieda. It's the only dye I use now as it's very easy and the staining (dark brown each time) usually wears off during the night for the next morning. Occasionally it's been a little longer but never more than 2 nights (including the night of the day I do it). I could be more careful with application and make less mess/use those wipes that remove colour/rub the colour in at the hairline to make less staining etc but eh... effort .

I did infact today make more of an effort with my greys as so much had happened since I dyed my hair that it'd grown out a good inch and half (never had a clear run of 2 days to do my hair where I didn't need to go out/something happen in the mean time so it took a while) and emptied half the liquid out into one of those mixing bowls and brush sets to target the roots first for 10 mins before using the usual 'foam' application to do the rest and left it for a further 20 mins. It's all covered the same, you'd never know I had any greys at all (as they look like gently auburn/reddy highlights' and it's all the same tone rather than patchy mix.

This was the set I used - www.amazon.co.uk/TRIXES-4PC-Hair-Dye-Kit/dp/B0777QR5YM?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 (not price checked so cheaper will likely be available) cost me 69p from poundstretcher (similar will be in poundland and other discount stores too)

Another vote for the John Frieda precision foam, so easy to apply and smells great.

I’m sorry this happened. I think you should go back to the hairdresser. Just because they think it looks fine, doesn’t mean they did what you wanted.
