Close fitting thermals?

Hullabalooo · 04/11/2019 07:44

So i hate winter and am always freezing! I need some thermals or heat tech under garments but i wear dresses and fairly close fitting clothes in general and especially to work so they just look rubbish and like I'm packing the pounds.

All the thermals I've found have been quite bulky or with zips and just generally not very streamlined. Is there anywhere i can find warm thermals that are thin or don't stick out to buy?

I love the M and S thermals. Heatgen plus. Also can you wear thick thermal tights? Sports base layers? Wearing a scarf around your neck - even a light decorative one keeps you warmer.

Uniqlo heat tech is the thinnest I've found, but you can definitely get fine merino base layers in outdoor shops that are the same, although really fine ones might be more pricy than Uniqlo or elsewhere.

Cardigans are back in fashion, couldn't you find something to suit the dresses you wear? Even if you keep it at work if your coat doesn't suit an extra layer? I'd probably rethink your style a bit, spending all winter feeling uncomfortable, hot or cold is miserable.

M&S Heat Gen range. Lots of close fitting options in a variety of styles to suit nearly any clothing choice. Many of them are super fine.

I live in the long sleeve scoop necks under a variety of jumpers and cardigans through winter as my office is freezing, and have a few of the brushed fleece inner items for truly bitterly cold days.

Nothing beats wool.

I can wear my merino thermals under pretty much anything. They're expensive, but an investment. (I have been using mine for 6y and they're still perfect.) Also do not need washing nearly as frequently as any other thermals, as wool is self-cleansing. One set of longjohns, long sleeve top and vest top is generally sufficient. Test them for itchiness against your neck and décolletage.

Merino tights are also extremely warm and hard-wearing (again, an expensive investment) but need more frequent washing than the long johns in order to maintain their shape and elegance. You'd need 2-3 pairs, but they could last you several winters.

Fleece-lined tights are amazing. Vastly cheaper than merino tights, but OTOH less hard-wearing. Thicker than merino tights, so you may feel less elegant in them. Still, a very good cost/quality compromise. I don't know which makes are good this year. Previous years I have sometimes had to try several different makes until I found one that fitted neatly. Then I'd buy several pairs.

Also highly recommend wool socks. Wool is very squashable, so even the bulkier-looking socks will generally fit into ordinary shoes perfectly well. I don't mean heavy-duty walking socks, just almost any woollen socks. You want at least 70% wool and the rest nylon or a mixture of nylon and other synthetics for the best balance of warmth/hard-wearing/machine-washability. Don't get cashmere: looks lovely, feels lovely, totally not tough enough for socks.

A cashmere cardigan OTOH...the softest, warmest, cosiest thing ever.

Second (or third) the M&S heat gen, they’re so thin you would never know you’re wearing them. I often wear the leggings instead of opaque tights (with boots) and put the long sleeved tops under dresses.

Uniqlo Heat Tech range of tops and leggings, they are the bees' knees. They wash and keep their shape well, thin enough to wear under practically everything. They changed my life last winter and I can't wait to start wearing them again this year.

Volvemos · 04/11/2019 12:11

Another vote for M&S heatgen

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 04/11/2019 12:16

Marks heatgen, or the vests with silk. Sometimes you can get them on ebay. The silk isn't quite as warm but is very thin indeed

Primark fluffy leggings instead of 100 denier tights. Really no difference visually aslong as youre wearing boots (ankle highs work fine).

Yy to wool socks.

alphaechokiwi · 04/11/2019 13:05

I second the silk recommendation. Very thin, very warm and toasty. Patra or lands end both sell good ones.

M and S

Notcontent · 04/11/2019 13:11

I love the Uniqlo heat tech range - the scoop necked tops are perfect for under jumpers and dresses.

Expressedways · 04/11/2019 13:13

Uniqlo heat tech. I typically get the extra warm (not UK, Arctic winters) and it’s still comfortable under dresses for work. The fleece lined tights are amazing.

Hullabalooo · 04/11/2019 21:47

Wonderful! This is absolutely brilliant. Thanks so much. Have made a uniqlo order this eve and am. Looking into m and s stuff too. Thanks!

I brought silk thermals from John Lewis and they keep you warm and you don’t overheat if you go somewhere hot.

Hullabalooo · 07/11/2019 18:11

Thanks for the uniqlo heat tech recommendation. Clothes arrived yesterday. I'm nice and toasty!

I'm obsessed with thermals! M&S for me

Can I please point out that wool thermal shoe insoles are life changing

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 07/11/2019 21:52

I wear Uniqlo all through winter. It means autumn and spring outfits can be worn for longer too. revolutionised my life!

Hullabalooo · 10/11/2019 00:02

Oooh that's a good point @dustoffyourhighesthopes

I've just bought sheepskin insoles from Celtic & Co and they are wonderful. Also a big fan of M&S Heatgen and Uniqlo Heattech. When I think of the thermals my mother still used to wears, I thank god for 21st century technology
