Summery dress for November wedding?

Just looking for some opinions here. I have a wedding coming up in two weeks. I don't know the couple at all, it's a cousin of DP who he rarely sees but the family expects us to go.

I really don't want to buy a new dress but the only ones I have (that still fit) are more summery colours. I'd like to wear a floral dress with a pastel green background, with a light grey jacket and (maybe) nude sandals. Does this sound ok?

Not really. Sorry.

BeatriceTheBeast · 03/11/2019 19:01

What sort of dress? With sleeves fine, without...hmmm no. I wouldn't.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/11/2019 22:29

I think you will look and feel out of place in summer clothes. If it's cost you're worried about, I'm sure MN bargain hunters will be able to help find you an affordable suitable outfit.

It's not a summer style dress as such, it's only the colour I'm concerned about. There are some richer colours in the pattern.

It is sleeveless but I didn't know that was a problem as long as you have a jacket/blazer for the church.

Definitely don't buy a new dress for this. The dress is probably fine but nude sandals in November? Do you have darker shoes or boots that could pull out the darker colours in the pattern? Same with your jacket, do you have a darker jacket or coat? TBH I'd just wear your smartest warm coat, as long as it covers up the dress it doesn't even need to go with it, shoes do though.

So the smart shoes I have that would be ok for a wedding are either black or nude. Black definitely doesn't go with the dress but nude does. Last winter wedding I went to, hardly anyone was wearing court shoes or regular heels, it was mostly strappy sandals (not all delicate ones, more block heels and thicker straps). That seems to be the fashion at the moment...

Alternatively I can borrow this dress and wear it with a black jacket and shoes

I prefer the JL one you just posted, but that's only based on your description of the other dress, so it's hard to say.

I think sandals look a bit odd in winter. I've only been to two winter weddings and I can't even remember what people had on their feet tbh.

I do remember it was cold going from car to church, back to car, to venue and then waiting for cab home. But if it's an all day in a hotel type wedding, that obviously wouldn't matter so much.

I wore dresses with sleeves and closed toe heels at both of them, but that is more my style anyway tbh.

Thanks for the opinions.

Pic of the first dress here. It looks a bit more vibrant in real life than in the photo.

I prefer the green dress, black shoes and jacket option.

I think the florals aren't quite right for a winter wedding, but I'm being SUPER picky. If there was no other option, I'd say fine, but would avoid sandals.

Just my taste though.

Sakura7 · 04/11/2019 13:30

Thanks Beatrice, appreciate it.

I honestly hate having to figure out what to wear to weddings.

Borrowed green dress with black seems like the best option to avoid unnecessary spending and fast fashion.

I do like the floral dress though and think if you had dark accessories it would work for a winter wedding, e.g. maybe brown or a dark burgundy (whatever the darkest red in the flowers is). But as I said before I see no point spending money on party outfits (wearing an 8 year old dress to a work Xmas party this year).

Bowerbird5 · 05/11/2019 13:01

I prefer the floral one. Could you stretch to navy or sage green shoes? Hotter have some very comfortable court like shoes. They have detail cut on the front and lots of colours. I have worn them to weddings and they look smart but are also really comfy. You might still get some sale ones.

alittlequinnie · 05/11/2019 13:45

I love your floral dress and really like the idea of that with a grey jacket. Looks really pretty.

I love the green dress too but with black jacket and shoes it may be a bit too much of a contrast if you know what I mean... but I am of the generation that remembers Trinny and Susannah saying that "black cheapens a colour".

BubblesBuddy · 05/11/2019 14:30

The floral dress posted at 13.20 yesterday is perfect. I personally don’t think a grey jacket is the way forward with it. The flowers look maroon and that’s a perfect contrast. I would look for a cardigan! M&S have a great burgundy one for £17.50. Add a brooch and/or other jewellery, closed toe shoes (nothing wrong with nude or black) and a clutch bag and you’ll look great. Wear a nice coat over the top. A maroon fedora would be a good idea if you can afford it.

Sakura7 · 05/11/2019 14:44

Thanks everyone. Glad to see the floral dress isn't as awful as first thought!

OP posts:
BeatriceTheBeast · 05/11/2019 14:50

It's DEFINITELY not awful op. Like I said, I was being super picky. Also, I'm not really a floral kind of person, even in Spring, so I am showing my prejudice a bit!

Sakura7 · 05/11/2019 19:41

Thanks all, will be trying on the green dress tomorrow so will decide then.
