Is it normal to feel battered after a massage?

I can't lie on my back it's excruciating. The back and neck massage was lovely, a little firm in places but then I just thought it was because I was quite stressed/tense in places. It's absolutely killing me now the next day :(

No, definitely not. I wouldn’t go back there again.

BuzzingtheBee · 01/11/2019 17:49

I wouldn't of thought so, sports massage or deep can be a bit sore the next day.

Redcrayons · 01/11/2019 17:52

Was it a sports massage? They can be a bit brutal sometimes, I've had ones that have left some bruising.

But in a salon as a relaxation, then no. I'd complain.

Yes to feeling battered but not excruciating.

curlyLJ · 01/11/2019 18:06

I had one recently where I felt quite sore for a day or two afterwards. She really had to work some areas and warned me it might be tender and to take painkillers if necessary.
Once that had worn off, my back and neck felt looser and I had more freedom of movement than I'd had in ages.
Can you take some ibuprofen or something until it eases off?

Gileadisreal · 01/11/2019 18:19

Not a sports massage, no. Just a regular spa deal kind of a massage, along with a facial. Even the backs of my arms feel bruised. She didn't mention anything, that it was paricularly hard to ease the tension or that there might be any pain. Will take some ibuprofen and remember to ask for someone else next time!

I always feel like that after a good firm massage. It feels like I'm bruised but I'm not bruised. It's fantastic for working the knots out and I sleep like a baby after it.

InglouriousBasterd · 01/11/2019 18:49

I was black and blue after a sports massage, including fingerprints! So in my experience - yes!

Falafel19 · 01/11/2019 20:22

My measure of a good massage is how much it hurts the next day Grin

Bananabeak · 02/11/2019 01:53

I always feel like that afterwards. I have a lot of tension and knots etc. But then I like a deep tissue massage.

AnotherCrappyDay · 02/11/2019 01:57

After a sports massage I can only describe the pain i had as bad sunburn, which lasted for a few days. It was agony, i never went back.

dontgobaconmyheart · 02/11/2019 05:18

Yes to sports massage, no to a relaxation piece. Do you have other health problems perhaps OP? Muscular pain/sensitivity etc easy bruising generally?

I have a chronic pain condition/musco-skeletal issue and this is what massage is generally like for me (hence why I don't have it unless something specific has got in a right state).

DarlingCoffee · 02/11/2019 08:55

This is the reason why I don’t like massages. I can’t bear normal pressure so it’s best in this situation to say at the beginning very gentle pressure please.

Gileadisreal · 02/11/2019 19:17

@dontgobaconmyheart I probably am a bit sensitive and I do bruise easily. I think next time I'll ask them to go easy! I did sleep very well afterwards though :)

I had a massage on holiday a couple of years ago and she worked the knots out across my shoulders. My god it was bloody agony during and after, I would have sworn I was black and blue but apparently not. Once the pain disappeared I felt fantastic.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/11/2019 22:39

It's quite normal, if she's had to get into some real knots.

GuessWhoColeen · 03/11/2019 01:13

I went to Yoga ONCE and hurt really really bad for about 4 days.

I do have some hypermobility though, so I probably overstretched too much too quickly.

If I have a massage or use the wrong pillow at night, I would also be in agony for days.
