Does this look stupid?!

I’m trying to find ankle boots to wear with slim fitting jeans. (Pretty much all my jeans and trousers fit like this.) In summer I wear moccasins, but in winter I’d like to wear ankle boots as they’re warmer and much better for rain. The problem is that the top of the ankle boots gets in the way of the bottom of my jeans, making the jeans look odd (crinkled up on the leg). I’ve tried a few pairs of boots and they all have the same problem. I’ve tried turning up the jeans inwards (not keen on the turned up outwards look), and I think that looks even worse, because my jeans are not skinny enough to look good short. The ideal thing would be to wear jeans that are a really skinny fit, finishing above the ankle, but my calves are just not toned enough for that - really skinny jeans look awful on me. Do you think my jeans look rubbish with the ankle boots?! (One photo is with the jeans turned up.)

I may not be fashionable but I like to wear lace patterned tights to cover gaps. They can be any colour you like, including pale.

Thank you for the replies! This is how my jeans look without boots - I think this length works well with mocassins and ballet flats. Shorter might be better when worn with boots, but I don’t know whether it would be a good move in general to shorten them!

@Nancydrawn That’s interesting!

Just get calf boots, save the hassle. I don't think the stule of boots hoes with the jeans turned up or down sorry.

Abigail098 · 01/11/2019 15:12

It sounds like turning them up is probably the way forward!

Style, not stule
Goes, not hoes 🤦‍♀️

Oh, cross post!

The turned up jeans in the photo shared by NancyEspana look fab. Don’t know whether jeans like mine with a looser fit also look ok turned up?

If it’s any consolation OP I have the same dilemna every winter. It’s worse with work trousers as sometimes they are hard to roll up! I also really don’t like culottes as they’re too cold for winter and I really can’t get over the whole ‘ankle flapper’ look that would have looked ridiculous until recently. I admit I need to move with the times!

zippyswife · 01/11/2019 15:21

Turn up or slightly shorter jeans.

fantasmasgoria1 · 01/11/2019 15:21

Return the boots and get some with a chunkier sole. No offence and just my opinion they are a bit plain! And as someone said you don't seem sure about them.

Nancydrawn · 01/11/2019 15:25

You can actually do it with very loose jeans. I'm attaching a montage here. I don't love all of them, but I do think it can be a good look on some (particularly those with slim calves).

The ones In the picture Nancy posted look like skinny jeans, they are a much neater fit where as yours look like slim or straight leg.

JoanLewis · 01/11/2019 15:27

On another note - where are your jeans from? I want some slim leg, but not skinny, ones!

Ellapaella · 01/11/2019 15:28

Cross post sorry... the ones below (baggier boyfriend style) look better worn with trainers or sandals rather than boots imo. It is only my opinion though obviously, if you're happy with your op then I think they looked ok turned up a bit but if you went for a slim leg ankle grazer you wouldn't need to turn up at all.

Nancydrawn · 01/11/2019 15:28

I agree that it tends to look better with slimmer jeans, but lots of naturally slim people do it with a wider leg jean. (You can see the baggier versions in the second photo--Kristen Stewart's pair is a good example.)

Nancydrawn · 01/11/2019 15:30

Double cross post!

quietheart · 01/11/2019 15:30

Turned up as in your own photo.

Flashing the ankle makes legs look shorter, if that matters.

I can never wear black boots with blue denim.

Do what you feel comfy with, we are all different.

NancyEspana · 01/11/2019 15:31

Too many Nancys Halloween Grin.

Abigail098 · 01/11/2019 15:38

Thanks for the replies - very helpful, especially the photos!

@JoanLewis The jeans are from Esprit (I bought them a year ago, but they still do this shape).

Btw, as regards the boots themselves, aside from the issue of how to wear them with jeans, I love them! I have boots with more of a heel but wanted some flat ones. I think these would work with tunics as well as (hopefully!!) trousers.

Buy short leg Jean's. That's what I do

Abigail098 · 01/11/2019 21:01

Maybe that is what I should do. I’ve decided to order some and see how they look!

@DonkeyHotty I wonder whether you would find these boots good for work: www.gaborshoes.co.uk/womens-c1/boots-c3/ankle-boots-c100/ripple-ladies-minimal-side-zip-modern-ankle-boots-p33892#attribute%5B1%5D=5313
I have a pair and they are brilliant in that they have a low top so don’t get in the way of trousers.
(I’m looking for low-heeled boots for casual wear, though, hence the current dilemma!)
