Over 40 and going to a gig - what do I wear?

I've recently lost a load of weight so still getting used to being able to choose what to wear rather than settling for anything.

I'm going to a gig soon - indie / folk genre. I need to buy something to wear so I'm looking for tips. It's been a LONG time since I was anywhere near this size so what I wore in my 20s doesn't feel relevant.

Help please!

Leather mini with opaques and ankle boots?

Catquest1 · 31/10/2019 20:06

I went to a gig last weekend - more rock than indie - and i wore band t-shirt, short ripped style denim skirt, black tights amd biker boots.

Normally i wear DMs but the biker boots are new. As it was cold i wore a hoodie (i really feel the cold these days!!) - easier to tie round your waist than a jacket during a gig.

Im a similar height, size and age :)

Jeans boots and a top that you don’t mind getting sweat or beer on.
That’s the great thing about gigs you can wear what you like x

LilyJade · 31/10/2019 20:16

I'm a size 12-14 & just over 5'3"
Aged 43.

If I was going to a gig like eg tomorrow! then I'd wear my new lace top from River Island with my grey ankle grazer slightly ripped skinny jeans & ankle boots (with a heel to see over the bar).
I'd put my black or grey biker jacket over the top & use my black or grey small crossbody bag.
I'd probably wear my gold hoops, gold & peridot bracelet & gold watch.

OR I would wear my short snake print Zara dress with black opaques & flat black otk boots under a biker jacket...

For my last gig at 49 (older band but slightly trendy venue) black skinny jeans, Converse shoes, an animal print longish blouse & a short fake leather jacket. I felt ok!

Sakura7 · 31/10/2019 21:02

Late 30s here and I pretty much always go in black or dark blue skinny jeans, converse (maybe boots instead in winter) and a t-shirt and jacket. I don't see the point in getting dressed up, it's more important to be comfortable, and most others there will be pretty casual (especially at a rock or indie gig).

Don't overthink it, wear something you're comfortable in and have fun!

NerdyBird · 31/10/2019 21:06

It doesn't really matter what you wear, apart from shoes. I wore jeans and tshirt, tshirt had some sequins on but not too ott. Boots or trainers are best, any comfy covered toe shoes ought to be ok. Don't wear flipflops or sandals. Unlikely in this weather but still. It's handy if it can all be chucked in the machine if you get beer on you.

Fightthebear · 31/10/2019 21:06

Black/dark grey jeans, top, flat boots/trainers plus jacket you can tie round your waist so you don’t have to queue for the cloakroom.

SouthernComforts · 31/10/2019 21:11

Flat shoes! I usually wear black jeans/denim skirt, black boots or converse, tshirt and a jacket you can take off and carry/tie easily

Blankiefan · 01/11/2019 19:49

Thanks all. I'm feeling jeans and a smarter t shirt might be the way forward.

I'm entirely lost on all of this.

Wear whatever you're comfortable in, there's no rules.

TrickyKid · 01/11/2019 19:54

Anything you want. I'm 45 and wear jeans, t-shirt and trainers. I've never given any thought to what to wear vo go and watch a band though.

WildCherryBlossom · 01/11/2019 19:58

The last couple of gigs I went to were in the summer summer. Most recent was slightly rock / metal ish. I wore a black dress, leopard wedge heels and a denim jacket. The one before that was a slightly more folk type band. I wore a floaty floral dress, plain wedge heels and denim jacket. The reason for wedges is that I can stand in them for ages without feet hurting too much and I gain a bit of height to see over people if I'm standing. At this time of year maybe I would look for a jumpsuit.

Sakura7 · 01/11/2019 20:10

Jumpsuits are a pain in the backside if you need the loo though, and at a gig you don't want to be spending too much time there.

Richlyfruited · 01/11/2019 20:36

I'm mid 40s and go to loads of gigs and usually wear black jeans/jeggings and a t shirt. I always wear either converse or low heeled Chelsea boots rather than heels.

I usually take a hoodie or a jacket rather than a coat as a pp said unless you want to queue for the cloakroom something you can tie round your waist is good!

SpeckledyHen · 01/11/2019 21:58

Flat shoes and small cross body bag .

TooSweetToBeSour · 01/11/2019 22:26

Clothes Grin, and the most comfortable shoes you own. That’s literally it. Gigs are purely about comfort

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 01/11/2019 22:52

Jeans, t shirt, flat shoes, anything you don't mind getting beer spilled on, sometimes denim shirt and opaques, t shirt flat boots or converse, essentially what I've worn to gigs since I was about 15. For crying out loud don't wear heels unless by gig you mean seated at the O2 NOTAGIG

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 01/11/2019 22:53

*skirt not shirt

evilharpy · 02/11/2019 00:11

I’d wear skinny jeans, band tee, docs, black leather biker. And a cross body bag. I have a sort of distressed gold leather one I like.

No idea what people wear to a folk gig though. I’d probably still wear the above.
