Help orangey hair

So, I used to sit in the hairdresser for 5 hours on a weekend having highlights in my hair. But I had to stop that because it was as boring as hell and I don't have 5 hours to do this every 4 weeks.
I'm mouse and grey stripes so it has to be covered with something because my natural hair colour is hideous.
I started using clairol light ash and stick it on every 4 weeks but it always looks orangey.
I hate any kind of orange as it clashes with my skin colour.
Is there any other do it yourself hair colour that doesn't go orange?
Everything light blond goes orange on my hair.........I'm despairing.
i can't face going back to the long hours at the hairdressers.

I've bitten the bullet and I'm going grey for mainly this reason. Horrific orangey hue that looked Berlusconi-esque.

However, interested to hear answers ....

Using one of those purple tinted shampoo and conditioner brands will help to correct the colour eg John Frieda.
Or go to hairdresser for colour 2-3 times per year and ask them what brand and shade they use, so you can do own roots or recolour in between visits (is what I do)

Ah yes an advert for purple tinted home hair dye popped up on facebook but I missed the actual brand which was annoying.

Purple shampoo definitely would help.

I have this problem. I use a brand of purple shampoo called fudge. I think it's great as it really tones down the yellow and orange brassiness. Beware though as it's very strong so use gloves or wash hands. Also don't use too often as it tends to build up a purple tint (although some people like this look). I've tried a few purple shampoos and, for me personally, this one has given the brightest results. Good luck.

cato75 · 31/10/2019 06:48

Fudge seems pricey compared to some of the other brands but a tube lasts a long time.

ProseccoIsTheAnswerHere · 31/10/2019 06:52

It really depends how orange we are talking here. Purple tint shampoo is really made for those with brassy tones and not actual orange ykwim?

This is the difference between going to a hairdresser and a box dye - the hairdresser can control the lift of your colour and tone it, all based on your natural hair colour and colour history. A box in the shop can only lift your hair so much.

Purple shampoo may not be strong enough...it wasn’t for me after m hairdresser bleached it & did a poor job of toning. I bought Wella 18 toner & the developer online & it got rid of yellow on bleached hair. It’s easy to do. There are YouTube videos to show it too

You can buy a blue tinted shampoo and conditioner called "No more orange" which is designed for this

HowlsMovingBungalow · 31/10/2019 11:16

Fudge Shampoo - Clean Blonde.

RacheyCat · 31/10/2019 12:31

I get Schwarzkopt Colour Wash shampoo in blue. If you're blonde, it does actually dye your hair blue, but if you put it on very orangey bits, they go more brown. I put it on my orangey roots for a couple of minutes and then wash it out in the shower. Much more effective than purple shampoo which is better for yellow tones.

Terriergrrrrrrrr · 31/10/2019 20:10

L'oreal professional do a purple/blue hair cc creme that goes on like a deep conditioner. Ten mins with that and you'll be a cooler blonde

madcatladyforever · 31/10/2019 20:13

That's great. Thanks for all your help!!!

I have recommended this on here before but I would look into using Majirel cool cover and doing it yourself at home

lindyloo57 · 01/11/2019 18:53

I have been useing for years a wella highlights kit in between saloon visits, I only have my done in a salons two to three times a year, I have dark mousey colour hair, I leave it at least a hour, although it says no more than 50 mins, and the colour I get is ashy light blonde, I do keep it conditioned well, as it does make your hair dry, it is a bleach after all. It's only around £6. 00 a box so you could try it, just do a test maybe a piece underneath,

Elllllle · 02/11/2019 07:36

My hairdresser told me that the fudge purple shampoo will eventually turn your hair orange - well known around hairdressing circles apparently. She made me bin it.

Ringsender2 · 02/11/2019 13:42

Hi @madcatladyforever I just checked and the dye I used that turned my hair a bizarre and unattractive orange is none other than... clairol nice n easy medium ash blonde.

It also claims to be semi-permanent with no ammonia or bleach. However, it's definitely lightened my hair permanently.

risefromyourgrave · 02/11/2019 14:05

Fanola do a blue tinted shampoo to reduce orange-ness. I use their more purple-y one to reduce brassiness and it is amazing!
