Outfits for Xmas and new year in Thailand

Hi I am spending Xmas and new year in Thailand. There will be two big parties to attend obviously but I am really stuck on what to wear!

In this country it wouldn't be a problem but I don't think it would be the same. Obviously weather is an issue but a black dress, even short and sleeveless would look really out of place.

Can anybody help me with inspiration?

Obviously the shops are lacking in summer type dress inspiration at the moment too!

I am a size 16/18 and 5ft 8. My best colour is navy but I know that would look out of place in that setting.

Depending on where you will be staying, maybe do some research to see if you can shop for something while you are there? I bought the outfit I wore to my son's wedding in Bali once I got there. I knew from previous trips that even in Sydney I would struggle to buy something suitable in a light enough fabric for a beach wedding in hot and humid weather and I knew there was a shopping complex with fancy boutiques near where we were staying. Most of my friends were horrified at the thought though so I did have a back up packed just in case.

Yes that's good thinking but it wouldn't work for me as I need to have everything planned or I get anxious! I haven't been here before so I'm not sure on the shopping.

You were v brave to do that for your sons wedding!

I'd also plan to buy something that the locals wear. Go online and I'm sure you'd find some gorgeous Thai outfits , for daytime as well as party clothes.

I spent Christmas in Thailand a few years ago, there is nothing wrong with wearing a black dress if it's sleeveless and weather appropriate - to make sure you're not sweaty and uncomfortable! Don't overthink it.

If its at a hotel you'll find people dressed in full length blinged dresses through to fairly normal summer dresses. So depends on your style.

Remember whatever you take you need to think shoes etc so frankly you might want to start there and pick something you can wear with shoes you're already taking. Also work out if its inside or outside (ie on a beach) that may influence your shoe choice. But if inside (or both) think about a scarf because AC can be brutal in some places.

Also remember a lot of people won't be there for both parties - especially if its a hotel - so don't be afraid to wear the same dress for both or pick something you can dress down for other nights

I live in Asia and so often go places like that for Christmas and NY I go for a maxi dress or palazzo style jumpsuit/trousers and then flat sandals or a wedge. Something like this or even more kaftan but again it depends on your own style. Living in Asia and late 40s I find my default is "loose and flowing" :)

The outlet/sale sections of most retailers are selling off summer outfits, check them out.

Where will you be in Thailand for Xmas and NY? Bangkok is dressy in certain bars and restaurants but not sure from post where you are?

Try Aspiga- excellent for holiday clothes.

They do a floaty/chiffon/velvet dress for example.

Or this frill/wrap dress

Just pack some simple summer dresses and dress them up with jewellery. I've worn a sleeveless black cotton dress in Thailand and don't remember feeling out of place. Anything goes Smile

I spent last Christmas in Thailand and I am doing so again this year. A black or navy dress will be fine especially if sleeveless.

I'll be celebrating Christmas and New year in thailand as well. Ive got to agree with the other posters. What you will want to wear will totally depend on where your parties are. In general thailand is very laidback and in certain places you'd feel really overdressed if you wore party wear.

We were in kata beach in phuket two years ago for Christmas and New year and did the whole 5 star Christmas dinner and it was smart casual. Its so warm so ou want natural fibres and have loose and flowy clothing as you've already had recommended. Unless it's a glitzy evening do then don't worry about it. If it is a glitzy evening do the then a.c. will be on full blast and you can get dolled up Wink
