Dianette for oily skin...

I’ve been prescribed Dianette for my skin which has recently changed from dry/combination to oily. Also for my hair which has been shedding excessively for the past six months. Has anyone used this pill? xx

Yes I did for a while, due to acne rather than contraceptive purposes. I had to come off though as it gave me the most agonising terrible headaches.

DamnShesaSexyChick · 29/10/2019 16:13

Yes I really liked it it's great for skin and hair

Whiffi · 29/10/2019 16:18

I have taken it (or generic version) for decades, makes the world of difference to my skin and hair.

FartnissEverbeans · 29/10/2019 17:13

I took it for years and years but I don’t think you’re really supposed to!

I’m not sure how much difference it makes to my acne but now I’m not on it any more my skin is absolute crap so maybe it was making a huge difference and I didn’t realise!

confusedmaybe · 29/10/2019 17:17

I took it in my 20s for acne and it was excellent.

EnidButton · 29/10/2019 17:19

I was on it for ages for mild acne. This was years ago when it was more often prescribed. It was bloody brilliant. Never a single spot once my skin cleared up and no oily t zone etc. I didn't even get oily roots. Perfectly balanced skin basically. It was good stuff. I'd go on it again if it wasn't for the contraception part! (And other side effects. I think I was on it longer than you're supposed to be but it suited me at the time.)

EnidButton · 29/10/2019 17:20

I didn't know it helped with shedding hair though.

CalamityJune · 29/10/2019 17:21

Really helped my acne

Sarahlouiseis33 · 29/10/2019 18:33

@Whiffi how did it help your hair if you don’t mind me asking? x

Stopped it all falling out and it's now much less greasy. Basically without it I'm hormonally 13 again. I'm lucky that I've never had any side effects.

TableNiner · 29/10/2019 19:59

This is a great drug for oily skin and acne. My GP wouldn’t let me have it any more as it had been linked to blood clots, more so than other pills. I was moved onto Yasmin that seemed to do the job too.

@Whiffi - that’s me 13 again at nearly 40! My skin has become so oily! And my hair is just constantly falling out! Do you have PCOS? x

OP posts:
Whiffi · 29/10/2019 20:32

No, no PCOS, just stuck hormonally in 1991 for some reason Grin
I've been on both Dianette and Yasmin before and now on Lucette. Not found any difference between them.

Sarahlouiseis33 · 29/10/2019 20:55

@Whiffi how old are you if you don’t mind me asking?

OP posts:
Whiffi · 29/10/2019 20:59

41 years young!

Sarahlouiseis33 · 29/10/2019 21:04

I’m nearly 40. Didn’t think I’d be going through puberty again though Hmm xx

Yes I have polycystic ovaries (but not PCOS) so was prescribed it as I had moderate acne, no oily skin but my hair was fairly greasy. I don't think it's regarded particularly safe, and isn't for long term use anyway - GP's were constantly trying to take me off it when I was on it and when j moved the new one refused to prescribe. It did definitely reduce the acne down to ta few hormonal spots and my hair was less greasy but it all came back as soon as I stopped.

Am on Yasmin instead now which doesn't get a great reputation either but the spots eviscerated my confidence and so on balance I felt ok with associated risks and side effects (most of which you don't realise you had until you stop) have been taking Yasmin a few years now and have noticed recently that the bad skin is creeping back. My GP has advised that after a few years on any pill the body often becomes accustomed to the hormone levels and it can be less effective on things like acne.
