If you've lost/gained lots of weight, how long do you keep your old sized clothes?

Due to an ongoing health issue, in the last 6 months I've gone from size 14/16 to size 10/12. I basically can no longer eat any fatty foods.

I've managed to buy some new clothes (mainly from charity shops) but with very limited wardrobe space, I'm rapidly running out of space.

Anyone with a similar experience, and what did you do?

I can’t keep weight on my body...I can be super small then the next week I could gain 30-40 pounds and I always keep my cloths just for that fact. Just in case you know. But when I finally realize that I can’t fit in those cloths like no matter what, I end up donating them or giving them to a family member that I know will wear them!

Well it depends really. Do you want to go back up to size 14/16 or happy staying at 10/12?

If the latter I'd just give your old clothes away as there is no point keeping them. Or you could get some of yo favourites altered?

I was slim, got fat, now I'm slim again. I kept a few clothes from my original slim days, usually things which were expensive / irreplaceable / unique and that I was emotionally attached to. I'm so glad I did! There are a few things I didn't keep though which I'm sad about.

When I was fat, I just bought very cheap clothes as I never wanted to stay fat. I also think there was an element of me punishing myself. I spent my money on shoes, bags and jewellery (since these aren't really impacted by changes in weight). So I don't have any of my fat clothes as there was nothing I wore then that I particularly liked and I couldn't wait to get rid (it all went to the local charity shop).

I have boxes in the bottom of my wardrobe. I am currently wearing my mid range stuff and have a box of smaller and a box of bigger underneath.

Last time I was smaller I threw out all the bigger stuff. But frankly I clearly can’t trust myself and replacing everything is expensive so I’m not binning the bigger stuff until I feel like I can trust myself...

I probably keep 6 months or more
When I was much smaller many years ago I kept a few classic things that I thought wouldn’t date - wool coats, denim, some expensive occasion wear and was glad I did as some of it could fit me soon!
I’ve been steadily losing weight for 3 years now (nearly 7 stone)
I sell a lot on eBay and use the money to buy new stuff either eBay or charity shops mainly

Medication made me put on three stone. Taking ages to shift it.i have bags of smaller clothes in the loft, waiting for me to fit back into them...

I lost about 3 stone just over two years ago - I very much needed to. I tend to keep out of season clothes in storage boxes anyway, due to lack of space, so I did that and then didn't take out the ones that were far too large. After about a year I started selling off most of the oversized clothes on eBay, but I have kept an entire box of very large trousers and jeans, as a sort of security blanket....

I gradually and intentionally went from a size 20 to a 10. I've kept 2 items. One is a pair of size 20 m and s jeans, just to remind me how far I've come and the other is a leopard print coat which was a size 14 but I paid more than it initially cost to buy to have it altered to fit. Everything else, in various sizes went to charity shops in stages.
