Are GHDs worth the cash?

I was in holiday in a lovely cottage with loads of extras, including some GHDs... they were amazingly different from my old babyliss. I’m aware mine are old though. Is it worth paying the price of GHDs, or is it just that mine are a decade old (or more?) and straighteners have improved in general?

If you switched to a hot brush, which? I did love the babyliss big hair apart from the fact the motor went slow reallly quickly

Yes yes yes. My GHDs are almost 13 years old and I use them at least every other day. When you think of it like that they're an absolute bargain!

InFiveMins · 24/10/2019 21:42

I've had a few pairs of GHDs and have recently bought a "normal" hair straightener and can't tell the difference, I now use both. I think they've come a long way since GHDs were the best 15 years or so ago.

Eesha · 25/10/2019 07:52

I have the wider ones from years back as i have thick hair. Didn't use them at all for about a year then started finishing off my hair after using a babyliss big hair. Really good product.

BigCoat · 25/10/2019 07:59

Not for me.

It depends on your hair. Mine's fine and bobbed and wavy/frizzy.

I get the same result from a £20 pair (lasted 3 years, just died) than I do from GHDs (lasted 10 years).

I also have a Babyliss Big Hair but it can't achieve what the straighteners do.

BigCoat · 25/10/2019 08:02

Alarae - tell me about this wand. Although I have 'wavy' hair (well, rats' tails!) I often curl with straighteners.

Intrigued as to what the wand might do that I can't achieve with straighteners?

firstimemamma · 25/10/2019 08:07

Worth every penny, had mine for 9 years and still work great.

BeatriceTheBeast · 25/10/2019 09:14

I have the newer GHDs and they are a total waste of money imo. Just crap. Nothing like the old ones. I truly wish I hadn't bothered. I'm not buying any more, so I just wear my hair curly / wavy now.

TSSDNCOP · 25/10/2019 09:16

Yes.

I’ve had to buy less expensive when travelling and left my beloveds at home and they’re imposters.

user159 · 25/10/2019 09:20

Yes a thousand times. First set lasted over 10 years and this current set are 3 years old, used everyday and going strong. I have naturally wavy hair so it's always a yes for me!

LouMoo13 · 25/10/2019 09:43

I couldn't be without my GHDs my original ones lasted 5 years through uni and got a lot of use (I was the nominated hair stylist in my house so on a night out they'd be running for about 2 hours!). I they dropped them and broke them and the replacements are over 10 years old and going strong!
I'm sure it depends on hair type but for me my very thick frizzy hair doesn't stay straight with other types or in order to get my hair straight and sleek I have to go over the same bit many times with other makes IYSWIM .

onioncrumble · 25/10/2019 09:44

I have had GHD Glides for about a month and they have been a revelation! I rough dry and then literally brush my hair with it, no sectioning. My hair is really silky and I have shaved about 40 minutes off my routine.

Lorrtay65 · 25/10/2019 11:12

Don't get the Platinum ones, mine broke after 2 years, just outside the guarantee period and had to revert back to my original ones that are over 10 years old and still going strong.

Mrsfussypants1 · 25/10/2019 11:17

My older ghds were fab until they finally gave up after 12 yrs in April, but I'm not a fan of the newer platinum plus or gold, I've tried and returned both due to quality issues or not being good for my hair. I have lots of hair, a thick unruly mane that I keep in a straight coloured shiny long bob so I'm quite picky about my hair and straightners. I had bought Remington air plates as a back up while I'd been having issues with ghd and the returns and they were ok, not great for me but ok. For the past month I've been using cloud nines the original and they've been a dream. They glide through my hair, I don't have to keep going over sections and my hair is so so shiny and sleek, I'm constantly touching it, and my ends are not dry anymore like I'd been getting with ghds so I'm not using a finishing serum on them. I also really love the temperature control, day 1 straightening I have them higher, day 2 lower temp or for my frindge, it's been so much kinder to my hair. I love them and would buy another pair if they got lost in a heartbeat I think I may be buying my mum a set for Christmas. I bought them direct from manufacturer with 3yr guarantee and half price accessory.

nevertoooldforindie · 25/10/2019 17:55

I’m looking for straighteners too. Liking the reviews of the kilo I ones as I don’t use them often. Which are best the smaller or wide plates? I have a novel shoulder bob. Fine frizzyish hair but lots of it. They do a curl and straighten too. I can’t decide

rededucator · 25/10/2019 17:56

Yes

userxx · 25/10/2019 17:58

Been using ghd's since they came out and haven't tried anything else since.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 25/10/2019 18:03

Cloud 9 are amazing & a lot better than GHDs in my opinion

maternity123qwe · 25/10/2019 18:03

Another vote for cloud 9s here, although the longevity of them wasn’t as good as GHDS but much better on the hair

Catrina1999 · 25/10/2019 18:05

My dad got me a pair for £135 for my 13th birthday following a recommendation from my sister. I'm now 20 and they still work brilliantly . My sisters have been going strong 10 years now :) Definitely worth the money

Thatnovembernight · 25/10/2019 18:06

Mine are nearly 20 years old and still working brilliantly!

cluecu · 25/10/2019 18:08

I can't remember where I read it but I'm sure the newer ones don't (or didn't) go up to as high a temperature as the older ones.

I bought some about 3 years ago and they were no good for me with the lower maximum temperature. The older ones I did love so see if you can get them!

BlueChangeling · 25/10/2019 18:10

I couldnt live without mine, they are quite pricy but I find they are totally worth the money. We have a local repair shop that refurbishes / fixes yours while you wait for £10 if needs be.

Ludways · 25/10/2019 18:31

Cloud 9's. The bloke who designed GHDs sold the company and set up cloud9.
