Help me find a jacket to go with this dress

I want to get this navy pin stripe dress for work but need a blazer type jacket to go with it.

What would you suggest? The obvious is plain navy but I'm worried it will look odd with the stripe. They don't do a matching jacket. I'm looking for something that will suit a formal and professional environment.

Are you sure about a blazer with it? I think the split sleeves might ride up as you try to get it on and really annoy you. I say this from experience!

If you think it’ll be fine, I definitely wouldn’t try to colour match as no two navy colours will be the same. I’d probably go white, a neutral stone type of colour or colour block with a vibrant colour like fuchsia pink.

Those sleeves are not for a professional environment.

@MrsMaiselsMuff Duh! That's why I want a jacket, dear. What is the point of posting unhelpful and obvious comments when someone is asking for help? Mumsnet at its finest.

@PARunnerGirl thanks for your reply. Yes I really like the pinstripeness of the dress and think it would look really smart if I can find a blazer type jacket that would go with it.

I still am not sure whether a navy jacket would be the least bad option - any other thoughts on colours. I wonder whether a cream/white jacket would be ok but then that would make it summer only I suppose.

@workwearhelpme I would probably buy the dress first and then take it with you when you go to try on blazers because I really think the dress sleeves are going to bunch up inside the blazer sleeves and annoy you.

For colours, I think I answered this above.

Ninkaninus · 23/10/2019 14:42

Navy is the worst colour to go with a dress like that. Firstly, impossible to match, but also will look very unimaginative and dull. Almost any colour would go, as navy acts as a neutral. Choose a colour that looks good on you.

Ninkaninus · 23/10/2019 14:43

Agree on sleeves, though.

Ninkaninus · 23/10/2019 15:06

Mind you, have you noticed how badly the stripes line up on the waist? That would do my head in. And that’s on the model shot!

MediocreOmens · 23/10/2019 16:10

@Workwearhelpme what an unnecessarily nasty response to MrsMaisel. I agree with her that the sleeves are not for a professional environment and will bunch up and look silly under a blazer.

Hardly. It's pretty pointless and unhelpful to state something very obvious. I wanted a blazer to cover the sleeves because - being not stupid - I am well aware they aren't professional looking and they might bunch. The bunching is easy to deal with by alteration or stitching. But frankly it doesn't matter - I was asking what colour blazer will go with this.

It irritates me enormously - which happens all the time here - when someone asks a question for help and just gets smug pointless answers that are obvious, not helpful and don't answer the question. It's wasting everyone's time. As you've done as well.

Thank you very much - navy as a neutral is a good point.

If I was going out, I'd go for a white blazer jacket to go with this.

For work, I might pick a nice pastel colour for the blazer. Either pink or blue or lavender. Don't pick dark colours - I think you need a nice light colour to balance out the black.

I love the dress by the way and think that pairing it with a blazer will make it very professional and lovely.

Workwearhelpme · 23/10/2019 17:37

Thanks @PlinkPlink

Have you had stuff from Boohoo before?
The quality is awful- super cheap fabric and poor details- which is fine for a fun evening dress but ruins the look of work wear IMHO.

Navy as a neutral is true IF it isn’t pinstripe.
The pinstripe makes it much harder to match with as it makes it seem busy and a bright colour can somehow look confusing.

I wonder if you could accentuate the arms rather than hide them- try pairing with a really smart pashmina/poncho type thing that has short/no sleeves itself.

No I haven't. Ah that's a shame. I won't bother with it then and thanks for the tip off. Sad I really liked the pinstripe-ness of it. It looked very professional to me (provided the arms were hidden!)

Maybe I just ordered the wrong stuff?

I don’t think those arms are unprofessional.
I work with some really stylish women who wear all sorts and still look super smart and serious.
