... where do they shop?

I’m thinking more classic, capsule wardrobe than trendy.

Yes. DH is 50 and wears a suit for work and spends lots on them and his shirts, ties and shoes.

Weekends he’s in sport gear a lot but gussies up in Ted baker, Reiss, Penguin with Diesel jeans and boots/trainers.

AuntieStella · 21/10/2019 11:29

For young men as per thread title, the most important thing is to get a really good suit, bespoke if possible. Yes, I know not everywhere is that formal these days, but there will always be times of need and good tailoring shows.

Ditto get at least one pair of really good Oxfords, from a brand which can be repaired over and over again (so you spread the possibly eyewatering cost over many years).

Can you give us some idea of what sorts of things he needs for work and also hat he does in his spare time?

Does he want to be fashionable or stylish? What sort of 'tribe' is he?

TSSDNCOP · 21/10/2019 11:30

Sorry I took the ~ wrong and talked about old git DH

TulipsTulipsTulips · 21/10/2019 11:31

Hackett is great for smart menswear.

Chillichutney1 · 21/10/2019 11:34

DH used to get his work suits from boss but these days prefers M&S. Gets his casual clothes from gant, boss, M&S, reiss, H&M and all saints. He picks plain classic pieces from these shops and looks just as well dressed in H&M as he does in gant Reiss etc

Chillichutney1 · 21/10/2019 11:35

*DH is 40

Sidge · 21/10/2019 11:41

My DP is older but dresses quite classically, tends to wear suits and shirts for work and shirts and chinos or jeans when not working. He shops in Crew, TM Lewin, Charles Tyrwhitt, John Lewis, Boss, M&S and a few things from Next.

Camomila · 21/10/2019 11:44

DH is 31 but has quite a sensible dress sense. Everyday to work he wears -
Understated trainers/shoes, usually goes to tk maxx and finds something blue or brown.
Nice jeans from Hollister
Shirt - usually navy/plum/dark colours with a pattern. His dad picks him up 3 or 4 new shirts everytime he goes home (Phillipines, either local shopping mall or duty free)
Sensible zip up jumper - usually from Next or M&S in grey, burgundy or navy. (He would never bother to go, usually his Christmas present from me or DM)

Same but with a t-shirt at the weekend. He is young so still likes Star Wars/slogans/pictures on the front.

peachgreen · 21/10/2019 11:52

DH is 40 and always looks lovely. He tends to invest in work clothes so gets a lot from Ted Baker, John Lewis and cashmere jumpers from M&S. At the weekend he wears Hollister, Jack Wills, H&M, TKMaxx, Next, a few bits from the supermarkets. And he gets his basics from Uniqlo.

ladyratterley · 21/10/2019 11:56

My DP is 44 but looks younger if that counts?!
He wears jeans from Diesel, and chinos from Gap, ASOS & Uniqlo.
Most of his tshirts and shirts are from Uniqlo, Linea at House of Fraser and All Saints. He doesn't feel the cold so only has a few bits of knitwear from Linea & All Saints.
If he needs anything smart then her normally gets it from Ted Baker.

PARunnerGirl · 21/10/2019 11:58

Thank you! Some great ideas and roughly the stores I was thinking of.

Work and formal is sorted because he has invested well in suits etc. It’s more the casual side of things where he is looking to get out of only going to TK Maxx!

He’s an outdoorsy, jeans, boots, t-shirts and checked shirt kind of guy who is looking to expand on his style! This is so he has more options for when he goes out to bars and restaurants mainly. Definitely needs to be comfortable and more classic than fashionable or trendy.

OH is 40. He shops in M&S and Matalan. He’s quite a sharp dresser and used to pay quite a bit more for his clothes (designer brands and higher end of high street, very good shirts/suit for work, etc) but he no longer really likes branded clothing nor spending a lot on them. He just picked up pretty much everything he needed for autumn/winter for about £150.

Ninkaninus · 21/10/2019 13:04

He buys carefully though. No polyester, always fully cotton or at a stretch 80/20 Cotton/manmade.

Strongbeatsskinny · 21/10/2019 14:09

My Dh shops in the designer shops always looks gorgeous weather he’s suited and booted or casual dressed. Me on the other hand I’ll shop anywhere that takes my fancy.

TeaChocKitKat · 21/10/2019 16:26

Similar to all of the previous posters but with a bit of white stuff and timberland thrown in

Whattodowithaminute · 21/10/2019 19:08

DH is really happy since he discovered spoke for modern chino trousers, he looks great in them-mostly for casual workwear though. Otherwise he loves a funky t shirt, good fitting jeans.

OverByYer · 21/10/2019 19:15

Taking note as my husband always looks like a sack of shit

DeviousBrie · 21/10/2019 20:35

Reiss, Massimo Dutti, Banana republic, JC Crew

DeviousBrie · 21/10/2019 20:36

J Crew I mean Grin

SaltySeaBird · 21/10/2019 20:43

DH is 41 and wears clothes from Fat Face, Joules, Gant... nothing with massive logos or slogans. Does a lot of sports but never wears sports wear apart from when he is doing sport.

Work wear decent tailored suit or suit trousers. Vast range shirts normally from Debenhams and a few plain ones from Next. Generally classic, nothing pattered for work.

500BusStops · 21/10/2019 20:54

This place for casual wear: www.oipolloi.com/
Great quality, lots of it is quite classic but very, very cool

I wish there was a women’s equivalent!

PARunnerGirl · 22/10/2019 12:21

@OverByYer 😂😂😂

So many great store ideas- thank you! Now to get him to loosen the purse strings and make a shopping date!

OP posts:
inwood · 22/10/2019 12:32

Gantt, Reiss and a bit of next / supermarket stuff thrown in. I think the wort think in a man is ill fitting clothes, if they fit properly they look so much better. (Same for me too!).
