I want to start doing nails in my house, what would you like to see?

I'm going to start doing nails using dipping powder from my home. I have a really nice house with free parking outside and a big spacious lounge. I am a mom and I like to be able to bring my baby with me when I have nails done etc.
I was thinking to let people bring their small children if they need and to only do dipping powder nails. Also make nice tea/ coffee / sparkling wine and snacks
Is there anything that would enhance your experience having nails done or perhaps something I should think to buy to set me apart from other home nail people?

Thank you

I pay £25 for gel nails in a new salon in the centre of town. I think you would need to undercut that. Otherwise what’s the advantage of going to you?

cultkid · 20/10/2019 19:17

They are £37 here for nails with dipping powder and about 25£ for gel without soak off where I live

@DobbyTheHouseElk I don't know yet hence going to go on a course but I might be good at it. I should be good at it.

£37? Surely that includes acrylics as well?

I cant imagine many people would pay £37 for dipping nails when gel is so much cheaper and last about the same amount of time.

Are they very popular where you are, op?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/10/2019 19:39

@cultkid I think you should go on the course. See how it suits you. Shoulder pain and back pain etc.

Then start thinking how to best start up. I’d advise you to work in a salon first, to really get speeds up and gain more experience and experience.

cultkid · 20/10/2019 19:58

@Tennesseewhiskey honestly there is only one salon that does it and they are so so popular
Nobody gets gel there any more I always go there and I only see people having dipping powder it's a great product. Have you had it done before?

I don't want to work in a salon!!

@DobbyTheHouseElk I can't work in a salon it would be too much of a commitment and I don't want to have to work with other people on their schedules etc. My family is more important then anything for me.

” I cant imagine many people would pay £37 for dipping nails when gel is so much cheaper and last about the same amount of time.”

Indeed. Odd!

Tennesseewhiskey · 20/10/2019 20:20

No I havent had it done. I have acrylic overlays with gel on. Its last 3 to 4 weeks.

That costs £25 everytime I go. I presume dipping plus my overlays and manicure would be far more.

I wouldn't pay more , if it only lasts three same amount of time. I am in the salon for 30 mins for an infil and gel.

I am not saying it's a bad idea. I am just shocked people would pay so much for it when there arent many advantages over cheaper options.

PollyShelby · 20/10/2019 20:42

The salons here do both. Every single time I go, no one is having dipped. They cost the same £25 but gels are what people choose.

I have had dipped but as I said the hygiene aspect put me right off.

How does dipping nails work, I haven't come across it before.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 20/10/2019 20:50

I’m not sure whether you will get insurance for having children of clients on the premises. Quite a few of my local salons have to put up regular reminders on social media that children under 10 are not insured to be in the salon and therefore cannot be there when parents are getting treatments done.

Also- as a parent I wouldn’t want to have to keep jumping up and down from my nail treatment to attend to my child so it really wouldn’t be an attractive selling point for me. Also- I wouldn’t want to be annoyed by other people’s children if they were there while their parent waited for their appointment while I was having mine.

cultkid · 21/10/2019 10:22

Dipping nails are a powder with a through colour. You immerse the whole nail into the powder so it's a total coverage of the nail- it is always a better finish in my opinion then Gel.
In the south east where I am the dipping powder is popular because it lasts longer and doesn't chip so people who haven't got much time like getting it done as it requires less maintenance.
Re kids it's only if someone wanted to bring their baby that I was thinking of. Mine won't be there.

I wouldn't over lap appointments because I don't want to sit around for hours doing people's nails and I have a family to run so maybe two appointments a day max. So there wouldn't be another client there at the same time.

Lots of food for thought. I can only go on the prices here and what people have done here - there's no point in considering what other people have done / don't like in other areas or their prices they pay in another town.

My house is a lot warmer and comfier then the only salon that does this in the area.
Still not convinced I actually want to work.

I would mostly be doing nails for people I know as I wouldn't want people I have no connection with in my home.

it goes without saying I would have to under cut any competitors, for which there is only one in the district I live in.

Don't do this, it would put me off if someone was charging much less, I would worry they were not insured or trained, if you are good people will pay.

A loyalty scheme might entice me.

Actually getting my nails done is part of my social life, I meet the same women there each session.

And the lady that does my nails now employs her two daughters, she is booked up months ahead because she is good. I have appointments made until September 2020.
