Winter coat

Helpmedecide123 · 19/10/2019 07:50

Does anyone have any recommendations for winter coats - I spend a lot of time outdoors with dogs and children so need something properly warm. I also work full time in a professional role so need something that can be smart too. In the past I've had North Face arctic parkas but I'm not so keen on the goose down any more. I'm happy to spend the money for something that will last.

Any suggestions?

Oh lord I hope someone answers you because I need the same thing. I'm professional woman by weekday, exhausted mummy the rest.

This Winter is set to be COLD so I want a good coat to keep me warm. I'm happy to pay a bit more if it means lasting longer (lower cost per wear: I'm all about the cost per wear Grin)

I'm plus size too - I'm completely lost!

Didriksons. I have the Vilda parka from Black’s and it’s the warmest coat I’ve ever owned, as well as totally waterproof. I’ve actually rebought it in a smaller size this year as I’ve lost weight and couldn’t face the thought of a winter without it.

Personally I would get several...

i have a couple of brasher coats. one padded, one unpadded (both ebay). the silhouette is standard parka but they're properly waterproof and the padded one is all i need for sub-zero walking temps. most important for the rain (here in the west) is the hood has a peak and is fully adjustable. sleeves are a bit long, mind.

Thank you - hadn't thought of Blacks!

I was looking at Barbours in John Lewis the other day but not sure if they are warm enough?

I don't find barbours warm at all tbh plus the quality of them doesn't seem so great anymore.

I'm fantasising about RAB currently... (loved Sue Perkins coat she wore on the Japan program 😳)

But if it's in anyway animal/bird cruel, please say !

Second didriksons, I keep looking to replace mine because its years old and looking a tiny bit tatty but always end up going back to it, it seems to fit no matter what size I am and always keep me the right temperature 🤔

Sorry about the rubbish link - I'm not sure how to do clicky ones on my phone Blush

Patagonia use recycled plastic for their synthetics, and reclaimed down. Their kit is superb, and will last a lifetime. It’s a big upfront cost though. With their long women’s winter coats, you buy the waterproof outer (Yosemite Falls) and down inner (Fiona or Nano Puff) seperate my, so you have a more versatile coat with the right level of insulation for you.

Patagonia’s ethical credentials are superb. They started the movement towards using recycled plastic, reclaimed down etc over 20 years ago, and give a proportion of their profits to global environmental projects. Yiu would have nothing to worry about animal welfare etc if you bought anything from them.

Saw some lovely heavier hooded down coats in uniqlo yesterday, was really tempted but unfortunately, just couldn’t see them getting a lot of use in my predominantly urban life

Victoria1083 · 20/10/2019 10:00

Please ignore - I misread your message - you are trying to avoid down

Spied · 20/10/2019 10:02

I'd probably buy a couple after checking out somewhere like tk Maxx.
Ours has some smart parkers around £100.
