The Price of Perfume!

How much is too much to pay for perfume? I'm shocked at how expensive some of them are. Are the really expensive ones worth it?

If it's a special perfume, like one I'd ask DH to buy me for Christmas or if I just really loved it and wanted to treat myself, I'd say up to £70 for a bottle.

For every day stuff, I would spend no more than £40 and that's pushing it.

AgathaTheAardvark · 16/10/2019 18:38

Are they worth it? Only if you really love it. They do last a bit longer I think, but not noticeably so IME. So if I preferred the smell of a cheaper one, I'd buy it over an expensive one iyswim.

sherbetstraws · 16/10/2019 18:44

That makes sense Agatha :) If you really really loved one though, then would it be worth paying a lot?
...... can you tell my finger is hovering over a BUY NOW button? LOL!

Haha! Do it if you love it! How much are we talking? I mean if you can afford it, just go for it. You only live once and it's just a bottle of perfume. Not going to kill the planet either! Better than a big pile of fast fashion shite.

Spied · 16/10/2019 18:48

My signature perfume us around £45 for 25ml. I think this is a ridiculous price BUT it makes me feel good when I wear it and so really it's worth it.

ScreamingValenta · 16/10/2019 18:49

I only ever buy 'dupes' as the fragrances I like are just too expensive for me - but if you can afford it and it will bring you joy, then why not?

clucky3 · 16/10/2019 18:51

I love perfume and dread to think what I've spent on it over the years. I just want to know which one you're deliberating overGrin

Steviestamborine · 16/10/2019 18:51

Perfume seemed to really jump in price in around 2005 I seem to recall. I remember because I bought some for a 30th birthday present a couple of years before that and when I next looked it had leapt up by about £20 (it was a Chanel perfume)

ISawyouinTescoyesterday · 16/10/2019 18:52

Yes same here. Have you tried groupon? They have some good offers on branded perfume.

clucky3 · 16/10/2019 18:54

Perfume parlour do some fantastic dupes of lots of popular scents. I have a couple of their Tom ford ones which are lovely. I wouldn't buy jo malone again having tried the PP ones, they are spot on and last so much longer

applesandacorns · 16/10/2019 18:58

I pay £160 for my everyday perfume... Ouch! But it makes me happy every time I smell it.

madmumofteens · 16/10/2019 19:57

I agree OP was shocked to see perfume prices are now nearer to £70 and not £50 as they used to be!!

sherbetstraws · 16/10/2019 20:10

I love you lot!!!! I wouldn't normally pay anything like this amount but I fell in love with this perfume. I've bought several tiny wee vials on Ebay and now think it would make more sense to get a real bottle of it...
It's £150 (EEEEK!) and it's called Chinatown, from Bond No 9. I just have to have it before I die..
Ok I have to have it NOW.

Agree re Perfume Parlour, I do buy from them, but they don't have this one in stock.

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/10/2019 20:30

I’m shocked at the price too, plus it’s all tested on animals for the Chinese market.

I’ve got a bottle of obsession left then I’m eschewing perfume.

I have been buying Early Cucumber from Perfume Parlour for ages - love it but there's no way I could afford the JM original. Great, except they don't seem to be stocking it any more and I can't find an alternative that has decent reviews. Anyone got any ideas?

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 17/10/2019 09:35

Oh I love Early CucumberSad I love the PP dupes of JM much better than the real thing as they last longer.

Uhtredswoman · 17/10/2019 10:35

@MrsPellegrinoPetrichor I know - it's gorgeous! Have emailed them to see when they might be back in stock. Fingers crossed!

Meripenopause · 17/10/2019 12:02

sherbetstraws The body silk is on ebay (USA seller) for GBP58 including postage. Still a lot of money but far less than the edp. I mention this because I have had it in the past and it is unbelievably strong and over fills the room, even with a modest application. Comes with an edp vial too.

OtraCosaMariposa · 17/10/2019 12:10

Just don't buy the designer or expensively marketed ones. M&S do really good perfumes at less than £20 a bottle, so do next and Zara. Ok so you might not like all of them but I don't like all of the expensive ones either.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 17/10/2019 12:26

Next perfumes are lovely too, lots on line about them being dupes for designer ones

sherbetstraws · 17/10/2019 14:13

Lots of great advice, thank you ladies xxx
Fridgepants I didn't know there were fragrance groups on FB - thanks for that I will look for them.
Meripenopause I did actually in the end go for the cream, that's great that it's strong. I just couldnt bring myself to pay £150 for the perfume!

OP posts:
Meripenopause · 17/10/2019 14:43

Glad you got the body cream. The bottles usually have a 'shake well' instruction on the back. Don't ignore! Shaking the heck out of it makes the texture and scent more 'even' (as I said - its STRONG).

Hoooo · 17/10/2019 14:48

Perfume parlour is great
I also buy samples and decants from places like les senteurs
If you really love it and can afford it and it will give you pleasure...why not?
:)
