Diamond fell out of engagement ring

I inherited a 1910s daisy ring. One of the tiny diamonds has fallen out. Does anyone know what it would cost to repair, and where is a good place to go? I had it resized and straightened last year as it was a bit crooked. The diamond has fallen out since then, having previously stayed put for 100 yrs. Was that jeweller at fault?

Take it to a local independant jeweller, most use an out of house benchworker who will look at the damage and quality of the rest of the diamonds and give you a quote to replace and repair and also to check that the rest of stones are secure.

You could take it back to the previous jeweller to see if their work was unsatisfactory but generally a lost gemstone is due to damaged prongs.

I've lost a diamond from my wedding ring, not a big one, Goldsmiths (where we bought it) quoted c£250 to replace it, it's only 4 years old too Angry

Rathkelter · 16/10/2019 11:48

@timeforawine, that was what I was afraid of. Can't really afford to replace it at that cost. It really is tiny. A bit like this photo:

If it is a diamond chip it will be less expensive to replace.

RushianDisney · 16/10/2019 11:52

Go to an independent jeweller or two and get quotes, I lost a similar tiny diamond from a ring and it cost me under £100 to have it replaced, which included a solid gold surround which had come out with the stone and held the ring together. A friend did it for me and the diamond cost about £20, the small ones are cheap.

I had a sapphire replaced in a ring that was passed to me after about 50 years. It cost £140 for a smallish stone. A few weeks later another one fell out and I can’t bring myself to replace another yet. No idea how I managed to lose two and the original wearer never lost any!

If it were diamonds I would probably consider having a cubic zirconia put in just so that you can still wear it and then replace the diamond when you can. If you get it done though make sure you ask them to check the settings of all the others so you don’t find yourself in my position!

Mine is a little smaller than the stones in the flower. I'm going to try some independent jewellers per PP's and see if they are better.

timeforawine - yours would cost more to replace than a standard clawed setting as your stones are tension set and require more labour on a jewellers bench but go to independant jewellers to get some quotes.

Rathkelter · 16/10/2019 12:31

@howismoving what do you mean by a diamond chip exactly? Thanks

A diamond chip is a small piece of diamond rather than a whole diamond. They are used for smaller details in settings.

If you're in the North East, Wickham Jewellers in Whickham are amazing. Really quick and faultless work.

Rathkelter · 16/10/2019 14:57

@sparkly SE unfortunately.

I lost the diamond from my engagement ring a few years ago and my house insurance paid for it to be repaired.

keepingbees · 19/10/2019 09:18

If you're SE then could you go to, is it Hatton garden that has all the jewellers? A bit like the jewellery quarter in Birmingham?
Apparently there are a lot of jewellers to choose from and they are quite competitive with each other.
Definitely shop around. I've just had a ring resized at an independent jewellers for half the price that H Samuels quoted me.

Knowivedonewrong · 19/10/2019 09:38

I went to an independent Jeweller to have my engagement ring straightened and a new diamond put in, cost £100.

skunkatanka · 19/10/2019 09:39

This happened to mine and it cost around £500 to sort. It was covered on our insurance though so worth a check.

ferretface · 19/10/2019 10:55

I'm a jeweller.

Rathkelter's ring looks to be grain set if it's the same as the pic. Not too bad to repair. Most of the cost will be in the labour rather than the diamond so no point repairing with a CZ.

Timeforawines is channel set and the repair will be annoying as the jeweller must find another stone which fits perfectly (and stones actually aren't that uniform). I would expect the repair on this to be quite a bit more expensive.

Rathkelter · 19/10/2019 19:11

Thank you @ferretface. Very helpful.
