Are you sure it is hyperpigmentation and not your natural skin tone? As in, you didn’t have that problem 10-15 years ago.
If it is hyperpigmentation, and it is caused by hormones (for example, taking the pill), the problem will not go away completely until you remove the source of the problem.
Are you already using the RetinA over the rest of your face? If you are accustomed to it, by all means, apply to upper lip area as well but introduce gradually and always, always wear SPF. The RetinA will eventually help speed up the skin renewal process but the newer skin is more sensitive to sunlight so can get hyperpigmentation again (this is the simple explanation).
Vitamin C is very good as well but it also takes time and you need to gradually increase to a higher strength.
IPL will work but you must be religious about SPF. This is intense pulsed light which targets particular problems, a darker patch of the skin (or hair root if used for hair removal) absorbs the light somehow and the pigment disappears (not sure if it scabs over like it does with laser treatment). Only to be done at a reputable salon.
Exfoliate (gently) regularly and protect your skin from the sun. Use a good acid toner rather than a physical exfoliator.
Sorry about my layman explanations, I hope it makes some sense.

Branster thank you for your reply,i have noticed this before just in the summer,or just after before, i do use RetinA someties, maybe i haven't used spf as often as i should, but it seems to go away in the colder weather
It definitely isn't hairs,up to a point makeup covers it up, but more noticeable when my liplines are bad,i am having them filled in a couple of weeks, hopefully it will help

We keep crossing paths princessTiasmum. Hyaluronic acid won't make any difference to the pigmentation either way, but it's good for your skin overall.
You have to use a spf50 as PP said, IPL has made some difference to mine, but it hasn't disappeared. Also have bought hydroquinone in the US (murad do a serum), but i'm never able to use it religiously - it has a sticky consistency.

I have had mine from taking the pill (stopped) - had I known i would never have taken it. That said, you can get it from pregnancy hormones too.

I had a dark line above my lip (like a moustache!). This year I used Niod re-pigment which worked well to fade it, then o was fastidious about using SPF if there was even a hint of sunshine (I use moisturiser with SPF and also an SPF fluid as a base most days). It seems to have done the trick as I don’t look like I have a ‘tache in photos anymore!

minipie · 13/10/2019 23:02

I have this too, it’s hormonal and is worse when pregnant or on the pill.

It goes away in winter and reappears in summer... I should use sunblock but don’t.

I’ve now come off the pill and hope it won’t happen next summer...

Branster · 13/10/2019 23:30

Yes with Retin A or any retinoid acid product you’d have to use spf all the time unfortunately.

BlackSwan is correct, hyaluronic acid won’t do anything to pigmentation, all it does is keep skin plump by holding onto water molecules somehow so that it looks better, it wears off it's not a permanent treatment and doesn’t resurface or discolour the skin.

Hydroquinine is strong stuff, you can get it on prescription only and I think you’re only supposed to use it 6 or so weeks at a time. Ignore any commercially available potions claiming to contain this or to have a lightening effect because at best they don’t do anything or at worst they can cause long lasting damage to the skin.
Clettercletterthatsbest this is very interesting. I never know which of the products to choose anymore for his issue so have stopped looking into it for a while.
minipie I started getting a few on my forehead about a year after I switched from combined pill to the minipill. I didn’t go hard core but what I tried at home as treatments didn’t make much difference. As an experiment, I stopped taking the pill and they disappeared in about 3 months or so. I kept doing regular home made parsley based face masks and toners and continued using a suncream from Bioderma which is for hyperpigmentation (on the oily side but the only one that doesn’t sting my eyes). I am convinced it was the minipill. Anyway, I went back on it because the hassle and stress of potential pregnancy outweighs dark skin patches, they came back more or less in the same place within two weeks despite religious spf 50 application. I’ve started tretinoin and concentrate more on acid toners and they are slowly fading.

princessTiasmum · 14/10/2019 12:40

BlackSwan ha ha ,yes we do keep crossing paths dont we.
Well i'm definitely not pregnant or it would be a miracle
The darkness isn't terrible, and i can cover it with makeup, up to a point, but it looks much worse with mouth wrinkles
I used a bit if Retin A last night and the night before,so will see how it goes doing this every night
