Best hair straighteners for a teenager & safety tips

13 year old DD who would like some straighteners. Just for the odd flicky up bit she is getting on her new bob/lob

Am happy to get her some - but am clueless as I am curly and never really used them.

I am aware GHDs are the brand every one raves about but they really are £££. Do I need to get GHDs or will something else? Do I need ceramic something? Titanium? Help!

And safety - shape/cut-outs/stands etc - any safety things I need to be aware of to stop her burning the house down if she leaves them on

I don't know about built in cut outs, my straighteners are pretty old, but mine came with an insulated heat mat which doubles as a case. I'm sure you could buy them separately. so they lie on this rather than directly the floor/bed/table when hot or cooling down. I also pull the plug out the wall EVERY SINGLE TIME after I've finished with them as I am paranoid I haven't turned them off, and you can't store them away until they are completely cooled.

So maybe get your dd into using a heat pad and pulling the plug out from the very start?

I got a lovely pair a couple of years ago from Argos. White Remington ones. They go up to 230. They were only £60 I think.

I second a heat mat. Very practical and won't burn carpet or wooden dressers.

How about a wifi plug too? Then you can always make sure its turned off even if you're out of the house? Extra peace of mind.

A lot of straighteners have an inbuilt timer so they turn off after 30 mins. Maybe don’t tell your daughter this to get her to unplug them but useful to know so you don’t burn the house down!

FWIW, I’ve only gone through 3-4 pairs of straighteners in the past 20 years so they do last well

You can pick up second hand GHDs on eBay for pretty cheap, that might be an option

My GHDs cut out after 30 minutes. I use a slate tile instead of a heat mat which works well.

Thank you so much!
I have ordered this - which has various options, including straighteners, which DD can play around with (thinking she can learn to tong her hair too for the kind of beachy look she likes but is aware does not happen naturally Grinwww.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00Q1S8SVI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

Am not sure if it has an automatic cut off but love, love this idea of the smart plug. We have one in the kitchen which I could re-purpose. Wifi maybe a bit dodgy in her room though - so may rethink and just buy a run down timer switch like this. www.amazon.co.uk/Energenie-Minute-Down-Timer-Plug/dp/B003QPCH2A/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=timer+plug+automatic+turn+off&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1570874294&sr=8-4

Have also ordered a silicon heat mat thingy and some (cruely free) heat protection spray.

Thank you!
