Thinning hair on top?

cardamoncoffee · 11/10/2019 10:08

Approaching 40 and my hair is really starting to thin on the top, particularly at the front. I have the mane of a lion underneath which makes it so much more noticeable. All bloods are normal so no usual explanation of thyroid issues. I've had my hair cut shorter to make it appear more voluminous but my scalp is very obvious. Anyone know of any tried and tested products that might help?

L'oreal magic root touch up so your scalp isn't so "visible"x

Sorry I don’t have a magic solution but I’ve heard iron, silica (spelling?) and vitamin B (not sure which) help. The pill or coil cause hair loss in some women. Hormonal changes in general such as menopause might have this effect as well.

Look up Trynny London on YouTube she’s done a few episodes about her journey in restoring her hair.

Many thanks for all of the replies, will look into them all.

Look up the alopecia UK facebook page, it sounds like it might be androgenic alopecia.

If it is AA, minoxidil is the only thing that can work in some cases to slow down the hair loss but not reverse it. You could ask your GP for an appointment with a dermatologist to properly diagnose what is going on.

I have frontal fibrosising Alopecia. I have lost both my eyebrows and my hairline is receding. I had bloods done and had low ferritin. I had an iron infusion. They wanted me to go some heavy duty meds, but I have taken a holistic approach.

I use castor oil and coconut oil on the balding parts, rubbed in at night, washed out in the morning.
I also use lavender oil, Tea tree, rosemary, peppermint with a carrier oil and rub them in,( individually).
I take a good multivitamin for hair and skin , extra biotin and I have taken saw palmetto.
My hair has not carried on receding it has just remained the same.

I also try to use products on my hair that don't have parabens and sulphates in them and definitely no silicones.
I try to go as natural as possible with products. I airdry my curly hair.

I would rather do this than be on meds that i have to have bloods done to makesure my kidneys and liver are not failing!

Also stress is a major factor in hair loss. I went through a terrible year which I think triggered my hair loss.

I would ask if they checked your ferritin levels, not just iron, as low ferritin levels will make an that you will lose hair, but bloods might come back okay, because they checked iron and not ferritin.

I hope this helps you!

If you are allergic to oils don't use them!

My ferritin was dangerously low actually (despite my heamoglobin being ok) and was discovered by accident and I had an emergency iron infusion. I do think some hair has grown back but it's still very noticeable. Will look into the oils, thanks.

I’d second scalp makeup.... I use Wow root cover which I get on amazon. It gives me a lot of confidence.

I have the same problem hair loss, but not from the front, i am taking several supplements,Biotin, which makes the rest of my hair grow like weds, but no growth where i need it
Vit D3.ZincViviscal etc, but saw a dermatologist who believes it is down to stress ,had 2 very stressful years, and HRT with strong progesterone which made it worse
My daughters hair is thinning badly which the dermatologist says in her case it is fluctuating hormones
Mainly because of the shortage of HRT she has been switched from one to another to another.all different strengths
Her hair was very thick and long before

GrumpyHoonMain · 12/10/2019 23:34

Take pregnacare or another prenatal. It’s really helped with my hair loss.

princessTiasmum · 12/10/2019 23:39

Cardomancoffee You don't say how old you are,it might make a dfference ,are you on any HRT or BC? or any meds that could cause it?

princessTiasmum · 12/10/2019 23:41

Sorry just reread, saw your age

DonKeyshot · 13/10/2019 07:24

Some months ago I seemed to be shedding hair by the handful, my parting appeared to be getting wider, and my scalp was clearly visible.

I started taking biotin, around £5 for 3 months supply on eBay, and it took around 4-6 weeks before I noticed an improvement. As a bonus my nails, which previously broke easily, now need cutting and filing otherwise they'd be like Fu Manchu's. Smile

Although biotin didn't work for princessTiasmum it certainly works for me and I suggest you give it a try, OP.

lexiepuppy · 13/10/2019 10:12

I had biopsies taken that's how I knew mine was FFA. I should have had more iron infusions throughout my life, I suffered with really heavy periods.
I think that and living with an abusive narcissist for 18 years made my hair fallout.

You are getting some good advice. I hope you have managed to keep your ferritin levels up. Flowers

princessTiasmum · 13/10/2019 11:15

I have to see the derm again on the 5th November,he did mention taking a biopsy to me but if and when i don't know
My daughter says she can see black hair coming through and she took a pic on her phone, and some hair is dark now at the roots, but not sure if any are new hairs, as my hair was dark but mainly silver now
I can only hope
