I’m trying to over haul my skin care routine and can never find products that suit my skin. I’m late 30’s and I have combination skin and get dry around my eyes.

I’m currently using a tea tree face wash (due to the spots) and avene moisturiser. I take my make up off with botanical eye make up remover as only thing that doesn’t set my eczema off. Iv just the last few weeks started to use a soap and glory hot cloth cleanser and have seen a difference to how my skin looks, a bit less dull! So I was reading for your 30’s that I should use Hylarounic acid and a retinol product...

Can anyone help with products I should try and what sort of routine?? I’m really stuck and there are so many products. I’d rather not spend hundreds whilst trying them all out. Can anyone help?

HMArsey Hylamide and The Ordinary are owned by the same company, Hylamide is the upmarket version of The Ordinary. The Ordinary is the price it is mainly due to the simple packaging.

Hi, in my opinion you would be better to use a product with Retinyl palmitate as opposed to a Retinol, its much gentler for your skin. You want something to help your skin each day rather than shocking it into change. If you follow that with a moisturiser containing hyaluronic acid and sunscreen its a simple but really effective routine to get results. I use the specialist serum and Hyaluronic active cream from Regentiv specialist skincare and have done for about 15 years now. Not available in the shops but via skin specialists, Amazon (I think) and their own website, regentiv.com
I first came across them in a salon I worked in when I had problematic skin but as I've gotten older I added the moisturiser too. They are more expensive than the Ordinary but each time I've tried something cheaper its ended in disaster so I feel "Im worth it" as they say.

I feel quite over whelmed with the products available. I love to wash my face properly (morning and evening) so especially at night I want something that I can wash off so I feel ‘clean’ after removing make up? There are so many products, cleansers, toners, serum then moisturisers oh and then the anti aging..... I really don’t know where to start. I know I have to change my current routine. As I said Iv starting (after removing make up with the botanical make up remover) use a soap and glory hot cloth cleanser thing and my skin does look better. I need a moisturiser at night that will work wonders but then I need one for the morning that is good for under make up too. Do I need a serum as well??? Really struggling with my very dry under eyes and finding something that works and won’t sting in my eyes Sad

@Wonderingwhyme, for the undereyes, absolutely nothing worked for me, I tired virtually everything and they were still so dry and all my under eye make up would crust and cake and look rank.

Someone on here mentioned Khiels Avacado eye cream. I didn’t hold out much hope, at all but was so desperate I bought some. Never looked back. I don’t know what the hell id do if they discontinued it as if I don’t apply it for a day my under eye skin goes back to being really dry and results in cakey/ crusty under eye make up! Definitely try it!

Sounds like you need to double cleanse in the evening. You use an oil 1st to remove all the makeup and spf then a gentle wash to clear it all. The tea tree wash thing sounds drying which can actually increase breakouts. I use simple facial cleansing oil (this removes make up) and the cerave moisturising wash.

I then use from the ordinary
AM
hyaluronic acid (on wet face)

Niacinamide +zinc

Moisturiser

Spf

(You must must wear spf if you use retinol or acids).

PM

Double cleanse
Hyaluronic
Buffet
(You can add the retinol in Squalane here, I’ve not tried it yet but plan to)
Rosehip oil.

2 nights per week I just cleanse and then use glycolic acid which acts as an exfoliant and clears away any dead skin and crap, then rosehip oil.

I’ve learnt loads from a Facebook group, the ordinary and diciem chat room I think it’s called. Ive been following this routine for a couple of weeks and I’m seeing big improvements.

Solihooley · 12/10/2019 10:05

You can email deciem for an ordinary regime too with pictures of your skin and a list of your concerns

Wonderingwhyme · 12/10/2019 10:12

Wow such a list of products!

Yes my make up goes cakey and horrible underneath! Thanks o will buy some of that cream.

I use botanical eye make up remover which is oil based as only thing that doesn’t affect my eczema and then I’m doing the hot cloth cleanser these last few weeks. What should I use for double cleanse?

also all these products would be quadrupling the amount of products on my face, won’t my skin go crazy with all that? Can I get like some travel size/starter kit of one brand that would have what I need? I’m worried about going to a counter and have the same old spiel as they just want to sell their products (obviously!) I wish there was someone who was unbiased could say you need x, y and z, off you go. I’m presuming that would be some sort of dermatologist though and cost hundreds??

For double cleanse you just need an oil cleanser 1st (so your botanical one may be ok, but you could do with it all over your face) and then a normal cleanser that isn’t drying (hot cloth one is probably fine too). The simple oil one I use is very cheap and also the cerave is cheap too from boots or Superdrug. The list of products is overwhelming and I also thought it would be too much on my face (until now my skincare consisted of wipe with a baby wipe and moisturiser, I’m so ashamed) but once you get used to it it’s fine, just introduce one thing at a time. You can get more expensive products that have everything in all together if you favour a more simple routine, but it’s still the same number of things. The ordinary just separates them out which is handy for building a custom routine that suits you. There probably will be a bit of trial and error but because the ordinary is so cheap it doesn’t matter too much if you get a dud, different if you have spent £40 on a serum that does nothing for you. If you’re on Facebook try the ordinary chat room.

Dirtyjellycat · 14/10/2019 20:15

I have acne prone skin and have done since I was a teenager (early 40s now). I had regularly breakouts until fairly recently. I recommended the Ordinary upthread and my regime is similar to @Solihooley:

AM
Buffet
Hyuralonic Acid
SPF

PM
Buffet
Granactive Retinoid 2%
Cold pressed rosehip oil

I also double cleanse before starting the regime. My skin has never looked or felt better and though it might look like a lot of product, it makes my skin so much better. Don’t be afraid of products, it’s about finding the right ones for your skin.
I (and others) have said that if you mail The Ordinary and describe your skin, they will recommend the product you should use morning and evening. Honestly, it really has changed my skin honestly, it really has changed my skin for the better - try it!

Dirtyjellycat · 14/10/2019 20:16

Oh, and my makeup isn’t fairy any more either - that’s the best bit for me as I like makeup and have always used concealer and foundation - but I don’t need nearly as much now.

Dirtyjellycat · 14/10/2019 20:16

Cakey not fairy!!

BelindasGleeTeam · 14/10/2019 20:19

I was using the ordinary but it became too much.

Pared it back to:

Oil cleanse in evening if wearing makeup
Wash face with Glossier non foaming gel
Superdrug glycolic acid

Facetheory porebright and regenacalm serums. Porebright is niacinamide and azelaic acid. Regenacalm is retinol, vitamin C and other nice anti ageing things.

Rarely need to moisturise now. Skin is loads better. Facetheory products have done far more for my skin the TO ones but that's just my experience.

FatimaLovesBread · 14/10/2019 20:21

Have a look at Tje Inkey List too, they're similar to The Ordinary. I rate their hyaluronic acid. I've got a lot of theirs and The Ordinary
The squalene cleanser from ordinary is good for an oil cleanser for make up etc

Wonderingwhyme · 19/10/2019 06:18

So I went to the ordinary counter and spent about £35. The lady said she wouldn’t recommend the Acid due to having sensitive skin. I have buffet, the one beginning with N, I also got the moisterisor but not sure I like the feel of it on my face and also some Rosehip oil. Although not using the oil just yet.
