I bought some flares... but dare I wear them?

As per the thread title! I saw some high waisted flared jeans in H&M at the weekend and, giddy at the prospect of non-skinny trousers at last after a decade of parsnip legs, I bought them. Now I'm not sure if I look on-trend or like a sad 70s throwback. I am not the sort of slim young thing that can effortlessly pull off a quirky look. I really like them though, and they're comfy!

They were only 17.99 so I won't be devastated if the consensus is that I look like a wally. Please do be honest but kind...

Sorry OP not a fab

Sorry OP not a fan

CodenameVillanelle · 07/10/2019 18:22

Wrong shoes. They can be worn as slouchy, comfy trousers but with pointy shoes or heeled boots they just look too 2004

QuaterMiss · 07/10/2019 18:24

They look like perfectly normal clothing to me. (Though you could perhaps try the next size up to achieve a more flattering line from hip to ankle?) I’d be inclined to seek out some slightly more expensive versions for comparison.

And, btw, it is not only young slim people who are allowed to wear quirky clothes. (Not that those are quirky.)

Queenlatifahsleftboob · 07/10/2019 18:47

They are great! Love them! I'll be buying a pair myself now I know where to get them.

FatherFintanFay · 07/10/2019 18:49

Hmm, ok. I can't really go up a size because that was already the biggest size they had. And without a heel, they would be trailing in puddles because I am rather short. Never mind - back they go!

It's not very flattering you need a different top and shoes to make it look better.

Lucked · 07/10/2019 18:53

I wear them, I have an indigo pair and have a black pair that I need hemmed so I can wear them with trainers.

I think top tucked In (or at least French/half tuck) possibly with a belt or a shorter jumper.

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/10/2019 18:55

I am envious of your lovely long legs! You don't need a different size but a pair of high chunky boots and a fitted jumper rather than a baggy one

FatherFintanFay · 07/10/2019 18:57

I wouldn't have been wearing that top with them, it was just what I already had on. However, I don't do tucking in because of my fat middle, so the trousers will definitely not be getting worn now!

I really like them, I’m wearing mine now, but change your top for a much better look. Oh and they appear to fit perfectly. RIP forever skinny jeans

Ironfloor269 · 07/10/2019 19:15

OP, try tucking in your jumper. It might make the outfit look less 'slouchy'.

Runningonempty84 · 07/10/2019 19:21

It's a no from me, OP. They don't fit you properly, and look slouchy and odd. Nothing wrong with flares per se, but not those flares IMO.

FatherFintanFay · 07/10/2019 19:26

I don't like tucking things in! Can I just ask, in a non-goady way, why people are saying they don't fit? They're comfortable and if I got a theoretical bigger size, they would be falling down.

Anyway, both the jeans and the boots are in a returns bag ready to be taken back to the shop tomorrow. I don't feel confident in being able to pull the look off and I don't want to look like a twat, so there we have it!

They need taking up or you need to wear heels.

Nicecupofcoco · 07/10/2019 19:30

I think they look and fit lovely! I think wear them and enjoy them, get sick of skinny jeans! You look great in my opinion.

QuaterMiss · 07/10/2019 19:33

Y’know, there really isn’t a ‘look’ to be pulled off! How many billion people on the planet? Only teens want to dress exactly like everyone they know. You can wear what you like, exactly as you like to wear it.

I suggested a larger size - perhaps with the waist taken in - but it would hardly be worth the alteration cost. To me they looked too tight around the knees - but I daresay they look fine to skinny jean aficionados!

sheshootssheimplores · 07/10/2019 19:35

I don’t mind them. It’s just that top that doesn’t look right.

Boireannachlaidir · 07/10/2019 19:47

They don't actually look like flares to me? More like slightly wider than usual boot cut?

I think if you'd modelled them on what you were going to be wearing them with you'd have got different answers. The jumper and footwear don't go at all.

FatherFintanFay · 07/10/2019 19:50

Alice I was already wearing heels in the picture! That's how short and stumpy my legs are.

I admit that I got carried away with excitement that skinny jeans were maybe on the way out and went too far the other way. I am just so sick of cramming myself into unflattering, restrictive trousers that make my legs look like overstuffed sausages and give me tummy ache and/or thrush. I used to wear flares when I was a carefree student, although that was when you wore them with trainers and ended up with sopping wet hems when it rained. But I guess it's not a good idea to revisit the trends from your youth when you're twice the age and about three stone heavier than when you last wore them.

QuaterMiss · 07/10/2019 19:59

Goodness sake! You’re so down on yourself. You look perfectly fine. People are only suggesting possible means of improvement. No one is going to laugh at you. No one is going to say you shouldn’t wear the trousers. They do not look odd or unusual at all. You are overthinking this.

XingMing · 07/10/2019 20:13

They need taking up an inch or so to look right. That's all, job done.

Silverstreaks · 07/10/2019 20:31

I've got an indigo pair and love them. I wear with retro round toe trainers boots and short jumpers.
I've just bought a Pringle jumper from H&M (m2.hm.com/m/en_gb/productpage.0804169001.html) to go with them.

theemmadilemma · 07/10/2019 20:42

A french tuck can hide a multitude of sins around the middle done right. And definition works well.

I think they're too long for a start.

What about boyfriend style jeans?
