Do you follow style rules?

Or even fashion rules for that matter? I'm pretty sure they are two different things.

On Friday I wore an outfit to work I thought was alright as casual-Friday outfits go...black long-sleeved polo neck with a black faux leather T shirt on top...Light blue wash jeans. Open toe thin sandals with probably a 3inch heel.

My manager and more person did a double take and the receptionist pursed her lips and gave me a long cool stare. What cardinal fashion rules did I break? I am at a loss Confused I've never had that reaction from people before. And this is a tech environment where the developers rock up to work daily in shorts and smelly T shirts.

Please tell me I looked jaw-droppingly awesome hence the reactions Grin

But seriously do you have any self imposed looking-good rules you follow at work? Would be good to know (so I can go ahead and break some rules of good taste) Wink

I reckon it was the sandals at this time of year. I passed a lady wearing flowery wedges yesterday and I felt myself wince at the thought of her cold feet. I am in the NE though.

Mummybares · 06/10/2019 07:18

Sandals polo and leather..its not style rules its confused weather rules.

Amrapaali · 06/10/2019 07:22

@Mummybares ha ha so true! But c'mon that is classic British style no?

OP posts:
Snog · 06/10/2019 07:24

I wouldn't wear ripped jeans, high heel sandals or leather tops in the workplace.

Amrapaali · 06/10/2019 07:26

@Waterloosunsets you are SPECIFICALLY not allowed these two items? Shock where do you work?

OP posts:
Mummybares · 06/10/2019 07:26

Its only classic if you wear socks too Grin

I see on boohoo and naughty little things 3 inch strappy sandals with everything..i dont think it wasnt fashionable its maybe too out there for conservative safe (sensible?) dressers.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 07:36

I used to work in fashion head offices & fashion magazines. I have seen all
sorts including both men & women wearing tutus to work & working it. However I have never seen anyone wear a top over a poloneck.

Amrapaali · 06/10/2019 07:41

Aawww @eeksville don't be too hard on yourself. You get to see the truly fashionable/stylish very rarely. Happens once or twice in a lifetime Grin

Well at least your bra wasn't showing unlike the receptionist at my dd's junior school. She wears a very sheer top with a small rectangular panel at the front to protect her modesty. Once she turns around you can see her bra strap, the moles on her back and the label sticking out saying she's wearing a 34C. How is that acceptable office attire particularly in a children's school. So I can live with seeing exposed knee caps and toes but not what she was wearing.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 07:53

I've seen Kate Moss loads through work so definitely experienced it more than once or twice. Plus some of my colleagues were far more stylish than celebs.

In terms of style rules, confidence is a big one & you seem to have that down!

Amrapaali · 06/10/2019 08:12

Thanks @eeksville I was being very tongue-in-cheek abt me being a style icon. But yes I'm happy to admit I'm confident in my choices most of the time. And generally laid back and confident in life.

And the Tshirt/polo was a layering look like this. Personally I thought nothing amazing but apparently I may have rocked a few colleague's worlds Wink

All I can conclude is the black pleather had them all quivering in lust in their seats 😁

Do you follow style rules?

I love sheer tops @fluffy but always wear staid camisoles underneath. You can tell I'm a big fan of layering

eeksville · 06/10/2019 08:34

I don't think that link you posted is so bad but maybe it was the addition of pleather, toes & tips that shocked your colleagues. However I would much rather live in a world where people feel comfortable to dress as they please, express themselves, be individual as opposed to a world full of tastefully dressed clones.

eeksville · 06/10/2019 08:35

rips not tips! Was there any nips? 🤭🤣

Amrapaali · 06/10/2019 09:18

Yikes I hope not Shock

But my boobs are a law unto themselves so who knows..?

@FluffyAlpaca... DS's teacher in Primary used to wearvery see through leggings so tight with a top that only comes to her midriff

TMI alert..I could see the outline of her fanny lips. ot what you want to see at pick up. I mean how do you bring it up ?

FluffyAlpaca19 · 06/10/2019 10:56

Amrapaali maybe they're hoping to capture the - - hearts-- imagination of hot, single dads or mums.

Futureplanning · 06/10/2019 11:19

I love the sound of your outfit and would wear similar, I think it's a shoe issue. I wouldn't wear the sandals to work and would probably put chunky boots on instead.

I also love a bit of layering!

Amrapaali · 06/10/2019 12:17

True @Futureplanning layering is the shizzle. I have emormo J cup norks so layering is the only way I can trick people into thinking I have proportional boobs! I've also had people say I am tall (no mate am 5'3) slim (naah am a solid size 14). All thanks t0 the magic of layering Grin

So you all think the culprit maybe the sandals? Hmmm interesting...

But I have pretty toes. And I want the world to see

RingtheBells · 06/10/2019 12:31

We are very casual at work, people wear jeans, t shirts, leggings etc, (I work in an office) and only have my toes out in extreme heat, it just seems wrong somehow, almost as bad as wearing a cropped top. Maybe it's just me.

shinynewapple · 06/10/2019 14:39

I think , from your responses, you just want people telling you that you look amazing!

But if you do want some insight into why your colleagues may have looked a bit askance, I think it's that the sandals don't go with the outfit. If it's for a dress down Friday, then 3 inch stilettos aren't exactly dress down. Sounds a bit too 'try hard'. Think ankle boots as shown in the pics you were trying to emulate look a lot better.

As to the ripped jeans, we all have different dress codes in our work places, even if these are more 'understood' than written. My office is what I'd say is on the casual side of smart casual, so I'd wear jeans but not with rips. I have a colleague who does, however. Sometimes I'm a bit Hmmover some of her clothing choices, but it doesn't stop her doing her job which she is good at, so, just a matter of personal opinion really. I expect she thinks I'm frumpy!

littleorangecat22 · 06/10/2019 14:57

I'm wondering if it's not the outfit at all but the difference between that outfit and what you usually wear. Is it particularly different to your usual style?

I have a 'type' of clothes i wear most of the time and have got some funny looks when I've run into people while wearing my gym clothes or jeans and a tshirt as they weren't expecting it.

Chapellass · 06/10/2019 15:07

I'm in London and work in a tech business. None of what you wore wd cause me to blink an eyelid except the strap on sandals. Given how cold it was on Friday, I would think you had been out Thursday night and done the walk of shame into work on Friday morning (or I might think you were a bit stuck in another decade work wear wise)
