Has anyone had their colours done?

A friend of mine has had her colours done and is raving about everything she learnt, and is now recommending I get mine done. Has anyone done this and would you recommend it? I like the idea of having a colour palette to choose from but am not sure if now is the right time. I've got back from travelling and currently have a deep tan that I never usually have, plus I'm a stone overweight. What I am thinking is lose a stone, lose the tan in the time it takes lose the weight and book the analysis as a present to myself for reaching a healthy BMI.

You can do it online pretty effectively. I wouldn't pay for it.

I do believe it's worthwhile to know though, I stick to mine very closely.

Lots of people should not wear black or white and they don't seem to know.

Aridane · 05/10/2019 17:12

My sister raves about it - happily she no longer carries her 'swatch' around with her and take clothes outside the shop to check their 'true' colour in daylight

Aridane · 05/10/2019 17:13

I would lose the tan but not worry about BMI

Candleabra · 05/10/2019 19:03

I had mine done a few years back. I loved it. Rather embarrassingly, I believe I may have been obsessive to the point of boring about it all immediately afterwards. So I never mention it now in real life now! BUT, it honestly was the best £100 I've ever spent, an absolute revelation. I've tried all the online tests (partly due to the previous obsession!) and I never come out as my true season. Doing the day with other people really helps you to 'get' the principles, the other ladies looked so amazing in the right colours it gave me confidence in my own diagnosis. The weight won't matter, and the tan won't either as long as it's a natural suntan rather than fake tan.

WickedLemon · 05/10/2019 19:12

Your weight and tan won’t matter.

I had mine done about 5 years ago, maybe more and would absolutely recommend it.

I did a few online tests but was never confident with the results. Going and having them done in person is completely different.

I’d say it was the best investment I’ve made in terms of my wardrobe. The most expensive clothes but in the wrong colours for you can look cheap and nasty. A big thing for me was gradually getting rid of black - I look back at pictures now and can see that it never ever suited me, I look bloody awful.

Abibranning · 05/10/2019 19:20

I had them done by a friend so for free. I mainly use it for adding alternative colours to my wardrobe, but I don't obsess about it. I just need to manup and get rid of the black (but it's too easy to feel safe and invisible in)

which1 · 05/10/2019 19:35

Doesn't it all just boil down to:

  • if you're pale skinned you should wear navy not black, cream instead of white and pastels, not brights
  • if you're medium/darker skintone, you should wear blacks, rather than navy and can wear brights as well but should avoid pastels.
raspberryk · 05/10/2019 19:58

@which1 no it does not.

Redrocks29 · 05/10/2019 20:26

I did with house of colour and it was a waste of money. They are a franchise. Even though you are given a sub season you should wear all the colours in the group. The consultant will tell you which ones they think are best for wow colours etc that you can dress in completely but you can learn a lot from Instagram.

I will post some links for you

Definitely worth it. The best thing about it is that having a limited tonal palette of clothes means you can throw any of them on and they will go together.

I wouldn’t bother with the online guides which work out your season based on generic categories like hair, eye colour, skin tone etc. The only way you can really see what colours suit you is by holding the colours up and seeing how they interact with your skin and features.

The other client at my consultation had a really warm skin tone which would have put her in the autumn or spring seasons based on the online guides, but she looked best with dark and cool winter colours.

Yika · 05/10/2019 20:32

I had colours and style done and it was definitely money well spent. There was much more information than I would have imagined.

Totally changed the way I shop and just getting it done was a really fun day out with a friend.

TileFloors · 05/10/2019 21:09

I said this in another of these threads very recently, but the thing that’s put me off having my colours done is having an acquaintance who is a Colour Me Beautiful consultant. She’s clearly decided some particular version of autumn is her season, so she always dresses top to toe in muted autumnal colours, mostly browns and oranges, and her hair dye, accessories and make up and even the frame of her glasses are all the same small set of muted colours.

Personally, while she’s a lovely woman, I really think it doesn’t suit her. She just looks odd, somehow, and I’m dying for her to wear something different, just once. I can imagine she’d look lovely in bright colours once in a while. It’s not even that it’s boring, it’s actually unattractive somehow to be always in the same perfectly blending colours

sylbunny · 05/10/2019 22:59

Does anyone have a decent link to do it yourself? I'm a red head but not the lovely glowing Irish kind, more the ruddy, tired scouse kind!

SpeckledyHen · 06/10/2019 07:14

Best money ever spent . I had it done years ago followed by the style day after I had lost a lot of weight and needed a whole new wardrobe. Recently had a colour update and was encouraged by the consultant to join the House of Colour FB groups which are great.

Idontneeditatall · 06/10/2019 07:43

Which1, no! Not at all

thenorthernluce · 06/10/2019 10:56

Best £100 I spent - I did a consultation through House of Colour four years ago and it’s been a revelation to see which colours I suit and which make me look shit. I’m a bright spring (woo!), and the most amazing thing was how coral makes me look awesome - it was a colour I never would have picked in the past, but now actively seek out. I don’t shy away from black 100%, just cos it’s such a damn good basic, but I no longer wear it immediately next to my face. And I still wear black mascara cos it’s the bomb.

The next best money I spent was an online consultation with Styled by Susie, where she analysed my shape and recommended types/fits of clothing. It’s been so good to realise how easily I can put outfits together that look good and make me feel great, knowing I’m in the right colours and style for my shape (and personality).

As someone to whom looking “good” does not come naturally, paying others to give me the tools to style myself has been a revelation. I’ve stopped spending money on clothes I love the look of but look shit on me, and saved money by buying lots second hand as I know exactly what to buy.

Aridane · 06/10/2019 11:24

And then you shop at Kettlewell which will have all the basics in your ‘swarch’ Wink

muddledmidget · 06/10/2019 11:40

Thank you everyone, I think you've convinced me to go for it. Not sure whether to go for house of colour (more expensive and nearest consultant is 70 miles away) or colour me beautiful (15 miles away). The idea of waiting until I'd lost weight was the extra motivation to lose the weight and then buy new clothes when I know what I should be buying

OP posts:
Candleabra · 06/10/2019 16:15

I know what you mean about losing weight, but why delay when you can start to look amazing now? Most people can't go out and buy a whole new wardrobe at once after the consultation so even if you do require a complete colour revamp just buy a couple of cheap t-shirts or scarves at first.... Feeling and looking so much better with a few changes may also give you extra impetus to lose the last bit of weight.
