Making own Batsheva inspired clothes

I kind of love some of the Batsheva clothes, although I live in too un-ironic a place to get away with them, but what cracks me up is how simple a lot of the patterns are! It’s really inspired me to buy a simple cotton pattern and some Liberty fabric and just crack on. For £25 rather than £200, I can’t go wrong... can I?

Starting with a top not a dress btw! Easing into the prairie style!

Errrrrr I don’t know the brand so I’ve just had a look. All the dresses I saw had fitted bodices with puffed sleeves and ruffled hems. Is that right? I’m not an experienced seamstress by any stretch of the imagination but I would have thought a long A line skirt would have been a good starting point and maybe add a Victorian style blouse for the right feel. With the tops you’ve got to navigate inserting the sleeves and bust darts etc. ( unless you can already sew in which case I will shut up. )

thenewname · 01/10/2019 19:37

I can already sew and have done some pattern cutting long long ago!

I don’t think I’m ready for a full gingham floor length tablecloth dress yet Grin (yet)... I’m trying a fitted round necked top with darts and side seams and plain sleeves that I am going to try and add a leeetle puff to and possibly some lace edging to the cuff.

The Vampire’s Wife meets Batsheva on a prairie at midnight and has a Victorian goth love child is what I’m looking for.

The Vampire’s Wife is gorgeously cut and insane fabric, but again from quite a simple bodice and a-line skirt... I found someone’s blog who’d done a floral curtain fabric Vampire’s wife style dress almost as a joke and loved it so much she kept wearing it... this is my inspiration!

I have a batsheva midi dress Smile, they use many vintage fabrics for their dresses, so that’s sort of easy to find . The weird tight bodice and puff sleeves are part of their look.

it’s completely not my style but I just loved how it looks.
I say go for it!

thenewname · 01/10/2019 21:04

Ooh queen, do you get a lot of wear out of it?

I LOVE that bodice and sleeves look!

But I prefer the flatfronted skirt style of the VW dresses... the gathered waist of many of the batsheva styles would do nothing for me, plus i’m tall so would sit on my ribs.

thenewme ,I’ve worn it quite a bit, it’s so easy to wear casually which is great, you really don’t need to be Florence and the Machine to get away with it.
my mum is a fan as it reminds her of the type of dresses she wore in the 70s, she also said it’s easily to duplicate with some fabrics from Liberty Grin
Have a look at Marches sale page, they do have some few left.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 02/10/2019 09:23

damn, that's some ugly frocks!

I just had a huge flash back to a Pippa-Dee nightie I had in the early seventies as a child!

thenewname · 02/10/2019 10:50

Okay!

Bearing in mind I want to tone it down a bit...

I have bought THIS fabric

liberty ivy

and THIS:

top and skirt

And to start with I'm going to make top A but with B sleeves, introducing a bit of shoulder puff, finishing neckline with dark narrow braid and sleeves with ivory kind of square patterned lace. Both embellishments I can leave off if I think it's too much.

MsMighty, shh don't be silly, sure wouldn't THIS take you to the office to night and back again in style.

@thenewname ...This stripey number is way more office appropriate.

I am certain I had this in the navy stripe :o

thenewname · 02/10/2019 11:06

You should get that and then resell for $$$500. Seems to be about the market price.

I want this now Wink ,

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours they are ugly but sooo pretty, they are 80s Kitsch , Amish clothes, chintz wallpaper, with a bit of Ashely baker photographs thrown in. No dress has ever spoken to me before. Grin

Sounds like a great idea. I have started making clothes and have made a very successful dress out of a child's duvet cover. £2.99 for the fabric in a charity shop. What's not to like! Smile I bought another one today, it's truly so-bad-it's-good. Heh heh heh.

mathanxiety · 03/10/2019 01:23

So glad to have stumbled across a few more Batsheva fans!

I love your ivy fabric. The colours and pattern are perfectly 70s and wonderful for an autumn and winter dress.

I would be tempted to use something more like this for a pattern and incorporate a stiffened fabric belt

thenewname · 03/10/2019 10:47

Ooh that pattern is amazing!

I’m slightly obsessed with Batsheva herself now, such an interesting-seeming person. Stanford educated lawyer married to a fashion photographer who decided to become orthodox (or highly observant anyway) Jewish.

Go and read some articles about her! Also she’s fascinating looking.

I've just googled her, she seems really interesting, not read much as yet but will investigate further later. I always admire the more interesting fashions.

Divebar · 06/10/2019 09:30

For all you ladies into that style without the necessary budget the Times Style section have featured a high necked green dress with an oriental style floral print with the long puffed sleeves. It’s £80 from Monsoon.
