What footwear with cropped trousers now it's getting cold...

...and wet!

Hoping someone will suggest a style I already own and just haven't thought of trying Grin

I'm in Scotland - it is getting chilly and already raining fairly heavily more often than not. I commute to an office job (need to be fairly smart) by train, short walk at either end but need to do it quickly, but happy to change shoes in the office, so suppose the weather doesn't actually matter that much.

Not massively keen on heels and can't wear anything pointy (bunions). I'm a fast walker and apparently work in a very echoey office so don't want shoes that announce my impending arrival too much - I seem to STOMP LOUDLY in heels!

Trousers in question range from slightly cropped, narrow leg, to moderately cropped (I'm 5'3") and very wide leg. Fabrics vary from black stretchy suit material to terracotta cords to something green and floaty... I love them all in spring/summer with plimsolls or sandals, but at a bit of a loss for autumn/winter. I have no circulation and my office isn't the best insulated, so bare feet/ankles isn't an option very often.

My normal winter footwear is some kind of black or tan leather ankle boot, usually lace-up brogues, although I do own a pair of black Chelsea-style boots, somewhere. I wear these with lovely thick merino wool socks and feel amazingly comfortable and warm, can cheerfully face bad winter weather... but they don't go with cropped trousers (unless I'm doing it wrong).

Please give me some suggestions of what I could/should be wearing with cropped trousers this autumn!

You could try sock boots. They tend to look a bit better with crops cos they're so tight and stretchy.

I bet M+S have some. ASOS would have absolutely loads.

Sooverthemill · 30/09/2019 14:37

Awaiting with interest. I think brogues could look good

FelicityFlutterby · 30/09/2019 14:49

I have some cropped trousers which I have been wearing with brogues and trainers in the summer.

I was coming and ah-ing about whether to just put them away for winter, but I think they actually look nice with black, flat ankle boots. I may be wrong. Still going to wear them though mwaha!

FelicityFlutterby · 30/09/2019 14:50

This is the look I'm going for.

I've got the same problem! I tried cropped trousers with chelsea boots but it just looked like my breeks had shrunk (good Scottish word for you there still). They look good with brogues though.

All I seem to find in the shops is short trousers. Brr

BikeRunSki · 30/09/2019 14:57

I’ve just brought some DM lace ups for this reason. Inspired by dd’s School uniform!

Floisme · 30/09/2019 14:59

At the moment I'm still wearing them with brogues. Then I'll switch to some flat, clumpy, lace up ankle boots that still leave a strip of bare ankle. When it's too cold for any gap I'll probably give up on them until the spring. That's what I did last year. I've tried with socks and slightly longer boots and can't get it to work - I like that flash of bare skin, however narrow.

Stillinsistsheseestheghosts · 30/09/2019 15:16

@mendokusai that is exactly what I'm worried about Grin

Might still be scarred from wearing trousers that were too short at 11... 'derek' was the delightful term for ankle flappers where I lived then, although I also vaguely remember something about the cat's funeral...??

I have brogues. Lots of brogues. I can do brogues... I suppose I can't get away with any form of leg covering though, no matter how cold it gets... pop socks or tights under trousers

I wore brogues and knee high patterned socks last year with wide legged cords. I may have looked like a witch but it was very cosy! With slimmer trousers I did the same as Flo and kept the ankle gap. Trainer socks under the boots helped with warmth. All the trendy shops (by that I mean COS, Arket and Toast) put their models in substantial socks so if it's good enough for them...

PuppyMonkey · 30/09/2019 16:47

I think cropped trousers look very silly in the autumn/winter and you’d without a doubt look much better in full length trousers with brogues or ankle boots.

The girl in the photo earlier looks daft.Confused

I’m not stylish at all, I’m just telling you what normal people think.Grin

FelicityFlutterby · 30/09/2019 16:50

I’m not stylish at all

You said it Wink.

PuppyMonkey · 30/09/2019 16:57

Is that you in the photo Felicity? I thought it was a model shot you’d found - soz love! Grin

thedevilinablackdress · 30/09/2019 17:17

If slightly cropped, I go for socks in contrasting colour to fill the gap. Ankle boots or chunky shoes.
Very cropped is trickier.

Chillichutney1 · 30/09/2019 17:25

Black brogues with tights and cropped trousers look great. Do it! Don’t worry about what the naysayers say Smile

@PuppyMonkey

Omg no! Definitely not me in the photo! I really wish it was though. She looks awesome. And I am vair, vair stylish actually...love 💅😎Wink.

Chillichutney1 · 30/09/2019 17:28

Puppymonkey by that logic skirts look silly in winter as well and we should all just wear maxi everything Wink

DontCallMeShitley · 30/09/2019 17:42

Some people look good in wide cropped trousers, but most don't. However, I like 'different' and patterned/lacy tights would fill the gap. I tend to go for DM's when in doubt.

Divebar · 30/09/2019 17:47

This is when you get to showcase cool socks.... there’s loads about. I personally don’t like ankle boots with them I prefer a chunky shoe. ( preferably 2) I haven’t ventured out of wearing mine with trainers yet but I’m keen to try them with my DM shoes which I’ve broken out today for the first time this Autumn. I do have a yearning for a bit of a brothel creeper though so you maybe can’t trust my taste.

Divebar · 30/09/2019 17:50

Some people are not interested in changing and that’s fine - they doubtless think that jumpsuits are an abomination and dungarees shouldn’t be worn by anyone over the age of 5. Crack on and wear your cropped trousers OP and I shall wear mine.

PuppyMonkey · 30/09/2019 18:12

Skirts and tights and boots are fine with me. Not the same at all as someone looking like they’ve bought the wrong size trousers.Grin

I obviously know I’m wrong about this as I am not stylish. I’m just an amused outsider.Grin

Do you happen to live in a boring town in Lincolnshire PuppyMonkey? That’s the kind of response I get when I go for a visit home. It’s all good though... laughing at people who are different is all the entertainment some of them get.

Floisme · 30/09/2019 18:21

I'm sure we'll laugh too when we look back in 10 years time. Fashion is inherently silly and the the day it becomes serious and meaningful will be the day I start looking for something else to do.

PuppyMonkey · 30/09/2019 18:23

@Divebar how very dare you, no I don’t live in a boring town in Lincolnshire.

I do live in a boring town in Derbyshire though.Grin

Don’t worry, you’d have laughed at what I wore 30 years ago when I WAS stylish.Wink

Divebar · 30/09/2019 18:27

Oh yes I’ve worn some absolute corkers of outfits.... the 80s being my pinnacle. Grin
