Shampoo for thick dry hair?

Any recommendations for a good shampoo and conditioner for use on very thick, coarse dark hair with a tendency to wave/frizz and to dryness? I wash my hair every 1-2 days (mostly because I exercise a lot and it gets sweaty) and as I get older - I’m 40 - it’s getting harder to keep it in good condition. I have hardly any grey so far, just the odd strand, blow dry it but use the straighteners very infrequently, and tend to put serum on before drying as well as using a heat protector spray. It’s not dyed.

I’ve been using Matrix shampoos for years, either the smoothing or moisturising ones, but they’re starting to not cut it any more. Anyone got advice for a really hydrating shampoo and conditioner that hopefully have some anti-frizz benefits and can be used frequently?

I have hair like yours and started with curly girl method, this year. I started off with Cantu shampoo and conditioner but recently I've been getting good results with the Dr Organics argan oil shampoo and conditioner from Holland and Barrett.

It's completely changed how my hair feels to touch. I think the big difference has been avoiding silicones. Also turns out that if I scrunch in a bucket load of gel, my frizz transforms into lovely waves and curls!

Tresemme and then Moroccan Oil.

Redkin Supersoft

I need to look into curly girl, any advice? I’ve tried leaving it to dry naturally and scrunching it but the problem is it just doesn’t wave regularly. One side is curlyish and the other is pretty much straight. But I’ve never tried doing the actual curly girl method.

I used to use argan oil when it was longer, perhaps I should dig that out again.

Kerastase is the best you can get, but it's expensive! About £40 for the shampoo and conditioner- I tend to use it if I'm going out/ special occasion. My hair sounds very similar to yours and use I use Bain satin 2 shampoo and masque tense (both cream and orange packaging).
Have also used redken all soft, which is a bit cheaper, but not as good as kerastase.

I have started using Maui shampoo and conditioner for curls, I have fine curly hair, but lots of it! Retread conditioner from Luch is fab and smells great, and i use R&B leave in hair curl conditioner and always get loads of compliments on the Smell of my hair!
I have been trying to do the curly girl system, with my own adaptations!

*Should say masquinstense

lexiepuppy · 29/09/2019 20:29

I meant Lush !
R&B is from Lush too.

L'anza healing moisture is fabulous. Very moisturising and smells divine. It's quite expensive but I get it from Amazon and it's considerably cheaper. I have used Kerastase and Redken but neither are as good.
I have curly/afro hair.

Christophe Robine from Space NK. You want the £££ (sorry!) conditioning mask. It is truly amazing and does last for ages.

My hair is similar and I do my own version of the curly girl method!

I use the Faith in Nature shampoo and conditioner, and cantu custard to reduce frizz and hold the waves to style.

I only use a wide tooth comb now and avoid brushing it.

My hairs not perfect but much better than it used to be.

Lots of good info about curly girl method, here

My hair is similar to you and I've given up on shampoo and only use As I Am co-wash. What a difference its made! The frizz is nowhere near as bad and it just seems to have tamed my hair!

I love R&B from Lush too, I only need a tiny amount now though.

Thanks all, some suggestions to try here.

I can’t see me going full on curly girl, having read about it. I really do need to wash my hair at least every couple of days because of the exercise I do, and I can’t see me having the patience to do all the blotting and scrunching and use all the products.

That said, I think I’ll try some of the gentler, sulfate free shampoos or maybe the cowash and see how my hair responds.
