How do you store knitwear and jeans?

I'm having a huge hose/Bedroom/wardrobe sort out and now need to be able to store all my stuff in what seems like a too small space as I can no longer allow my stuff to overflow into what was the spare room. I have a chest of drawers with 2 small and 3 reasonably deep drawers. A 3 section wardrobe but one section already stores coats as we don't have space in hallway. I am having a big purge a la Marie Kondo but I don't think her folding method will work for expensive cashmere etc as it will crease and sag won't it?

I have some 'nice' knitwear that I'd like to wear more often but because I store it folded up at the moment in the bottom of a chest I don't see it so I don't wear it. Is hanging on velvet hangers any good? And jeans, how does everyone store those? I have far too many but I like them all and do wear them in rotation. Folder over hangers or folded in a drawer or at bottom of wardrobe?
Any ideas gratefully received. At some point we may get built in better storage but finances too tight at the moment

I hang everything up as otherwise I forget I have it if it’s tucked in a drawer! Though I appreciate there is a proper way of storing cashmere I’ve just never bothered with it

Jeans in under bed storage. Cashmere in drawers. Velvet hangers would be great but I don’t have enough wardrobe space for that. You can get multiple trouser he gets that take 4 on one hanger - they are tiered. This works quite well and I use them for trousers.

I don't know if it's the proper way to store it, but I have a chest of drawers where I keep knitwear and scarves, folded up. The top drawer is this seasons knitwear: cotton, cotton cashmere and finer knits; the second drawer is mid weight scarves and out of season stuff is stored in vacuum bags in the lower drawers. I put anti moth things in the drawers too and vacuum bags to protect them.

I forgot jeans, folded at the top of the wardrobe. I rotate these seasonally as well, as lighter, cropped ones are for warmer weather.

I fold all knitwear and store in drawers, one drawer for cardigans and one for jumpers. I do a sort of modified KonMari fold with a flip&fold plastic folding template. Yes, I’m a saddo, but it helps get everything the same size. Personally I would not hang or stack knitwear. I fold my jeans (legs together then in three) and also store in a drawer. I only hang coats/jackets, shirts, skirts and dresses.

The flip and fold tool is brilliant.
Hanging cashmere will be a mothfest.
Hanging knitwear sags.

These ideas are great thanks.@NiteFlights whee did you get your flip and fold thing? Got a link? Once I've done mine I have to tackle DHs( if I don't do it, it won't get done so I just accept that). He is easier as he has a simple approach to clothes, work ( smart), home ( Things that are preferably 20 years old and torn).

I have 2 of these Ikea baskets under my side of the bed, 1 for thin jumpers and 1 for thick jumpers. Also have one of the folding boards. The baskets are great as they do get dusty but of course the jumpers stay nice.

Jeans are folded on a shelf at the top of fitted wardrobe.

ZaZathecat · 28/09/2019 19:47

I fold/roll both so they can be stored in rows in drawers and you can see all at once (a la Marie Kondo).

PartridgeJoan · 28/09/2019 20:17

Knitwear & jeans are folded in a drawer.

Hanging knitwear can be bad for the drape and will make it misshapen

Shitonthebloodything · 28/09/2019 20:32

I have no storage in my house, share half a double wardrobe each with DH and no space for a chest of drawers so I have everything in boxed under the bed and use a wardrobe app so I can see what I have

Oly4 · 28/09/2019 20:45

I hang knitwear (never had sagging!) but I fold cashmere on a shelf with moth protectors. Jeans are folded in a drawer

museumum · 28/09/2019 20:53

Folded on shelves in my wardrobe so I can see the edges at eye level.

I don’t know if there is a ‘proper’ way for these but with knitwear I worry it will stretch on a hanger if too heavy.
I fold long knitwear dresses in two lengthways and hang on the horizontal bar of a triangle shaped hanger.
All long heavy cardigan style jumpers I hang on hangers next to coats (only have 4 of these, 3 are a wool mix so won’t loose shape, one is chunky wool very heavy but would be a nightmare to fold and it survived being hang so far).
All other knitwear including fine knit, pure wool, cashmere or mixed fabric folded army style and stored on a shelf.
Jeans are folded in 4 (fold once halfway then halfway again) on a shelf in a stack with leather trousers.
I heavily culled all my wardrobe when I got a walk-in closet (which is not huge and also houses our bedding and towels and my insane collection of skincare items) in order to stop using drawers in the bedroom and any other storage as I wanted absolutely all my clothes, shoes, bags coats, accessories, absolutely everything all seasons to be in one place, visible and accessible. I think I like every item I kept and when I buy something new I get rid of something I own (it doesn’t have to be the same, I buy a new dress but give up on a swimsuit or pair of trousers, very hard to do because I only kept what I truly like). I don’t subscribe to the idea of getting rid of something you haven’t worn in years because if it fits, suits and is a classic good quality item you’ll wear it again.
When I had less dedicated wardrobe space, I actually had more clothes spread around in drawers in the bedroom, built in wardrobe in bedroom and spare room and so on, it was annoying having to go to different places to gather stuff. Men never seem to have this problem!

dudsville · 28/09/2019 22:13

You need to see what you're left with after the wardrobe clear out, but one idea may be to put some things in to storage. All my jumpers go into the wardrobe on velvet hangers from autumn through spring. Then they get put away and the summery things come out. Jeans get folded and go in the drawers with socks pants bras pjs home wear, with tee shirts folded kondo style.

NiteFlights · 29/09/2019 09:57

@Sooverthemill here’s the one I have.

Flip & Fold Adult T-Shirt Top Clothes Folder - Crease Free Folder in a few Easy Steps www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007W17LDE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_sBiD3OsoRKVxc?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Sooverthemill · 29/09/2019 12:11

@NiteFlights thanks! It's in my amazon basket. I do keep very summery things in a storage box under the bed in the autumn/winter already ( like sleeveless stuff) so I could maybe be fiercer with myself . I've just tried to cull jumpers and tried on each one and have decided I do like most of them so I'm going to see for a month now it's colder which ones I actually wear and if I don't wear any within the next 6 weeks I will get rid of/sell. It's easier to see with them folded on the top shelf of wardrobe ( which I had put up last week, didn't have a shelf before). I also have some heavy cardigans whic I've always hung and they seem to be okay in wide velvet hangers ( next to coats too as they always seem good for those in between days). I wish I was disciplined enough to have a capsule wardrobe
