Does this coat exist?

Please help me find it!

I'm looking for something pretty specific.

A coat:

  • fully water proof (not just showerproof)
  • has a proper hood.
  • 3/4 length, ends around mid thigh on me at 5'11"
  • isnt ugly, doesn't make me look like I'm about to go hill trekking.
  • Medium weight (ie not winter weight or really padded), so suitable for autumn through to spring - I will layer underneath when cold.
  • preferably black
  • not really shiny
  • under £100

Does such a thing exist?!?

Oh and it should be smart/casual, something I can wear on both my work days and my non work days when I'm running round after a baby!

Protected species have some coats that match your criteria pretty well. I may be mistaken but Mumsnet we're doing a discount a while ago that might be worth hunting out. The prices are a bit more than you are looking to spend but they're lovely coats

bananallamas · 25/09/2019 21:32

Ooooh ok thanks off to have a look...

Seasalt might have something.

A Rains curve jacket sounds like it might fill the bill. Most sizes are sold out on their website (they sell out quickly but they do usually restock) but places like Net-a-Porter etc sell Rains too, even Asos sometimes.

I have quite a few Rains coats and they're definitely waterproof. The Curve is very flattering. I think the tie belt makes it look very stylish on. Good for work and 'play'.

What about something like this?

www.landsend.co.uk will do a better selection although some may make you look as if you're about to climb Everest.

bananallamas · 25/09/2019 21:39

Those protected species coats are definitely lovely but also quite expensive... gulp

I was wondering this exact thing myself (possibly we all are, due to the torrential rain yesterday?!)

I'm trying to decide which RAINS coat - the curve would probably suit my curvy figure better, but I'm not sure that the rubber fabric goes with the trenchcoat shape? Does it not look a bit frumpy and odd?
thinking of maybe the straight one instead

Does anyone know if they come up big/small?

MoltonSilver · 25/09/2019 21:50

Ilse jacobsen

bananallamas · 25/09/2019 21:54

Thanks everyone I am getting far too overexcited about these!

I probably should have said I'm not overly keen on belted trench styles mainly because I often feel like they look too formal. That curve one is nice but I agree I'm not 100% sure on the fabric.

Currently stuck down a seasalt rabbit hole, will report back...

Sea salt Janelle although slightly over your budget.

ilovethatshow · 25/09/2019 22:03

What about a Barbour?

RaininSummer · 25/09/2019 22:10

Joules had this kind of thing previously.

TheClitterati · 25/09/2019 22:28

I got a mid calf Seasalt coat in dark navy (squid ink?) last year and it is fab. I'm very pleased, warm dry and almost stylish Smile

This is over budget, but it’s completely waterproof and lovely on!

Wrong colour but still neutral

Trumpton · 26/09/2019 02:44

I stretched to a Protected Species and have never regretted it .
Queued for an hour in the pouring rain and was still bone dry . They are soft and so comfortable . Best coat ever .

bananallamas · 26/09/2019 09:06

Ok I think I'm now between seasalt and protected species. I can't decide if I can justify £200 though! Please can someone pick for me Grin
