Face feels on fire. Any cooling remedies?

I used a face mask for acne at the weekend and it worked so well. So I put it on again last night, but this time it burned so much!

I woke up this morning and my face looks so red and angry where the spots were. It almost looks like I might have burned my skin (it feels like it as well)

What can I put on my skin to calm it? It's on fire and looks dreadful. I feel so stupid BlushSad

Have I scarred my skin?

Sudocrem works well but you'll look like a ghost. LRP Cicaplast might also work

browneyesblue · 24/09/2019 10:24

Maybe an antihistamine would help

MrsA2015 · 24/09/2019 10:26

Aloe Vera gel.

DonPablo · 24/09/2019 10:29

Got any chamomile tea bags? Make a tea with a few teabags, cool it right down in the fridge, use ice, whatever. Then you can use the actual teabags or dip cotton wool in the tea and dab onto the affected area. You could also rinse your face with the cold tea.

Looks sore. Flowers

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 24/09/2019 10:34

Which face mask was it? I would second TheLongRider and try the LRP cicaplast balm, it's very soothing. Weleda skin food (they do a light version if the original is too rich) is also good, or potentially a fragrance free facial oil. Basically you don't want to use anything "active" on your face until it's healed, just cleanse and moisturise with very gentle products, no acids, retinol, vitamin C etc (if you use those normally).

Lilonetwo · 24/09/2019 20:42

Gosh I have only just checked back. Thank you all for your replies. I don't have any camomile but I think I do have some aloe Vera, I am quite worried a put putting anything on it

I used a cool pack which helped with the discomfort but it's still red as ever.

I do have sudocreme, do you think that could make it worse? I will have a read on Google, I suppose it is an anti septic? My husband will kill me if I put anything more on it Sad

Looks like you have damaged your skin barrier.

Aloe Vera
Oil of some kind e.g joboba, rosehip, on damp skin
Vaseline on top

Skin can take 14 to 28 days to heal and renew.

What was in the mask?? Was it an aha or bha mask?

DoctorAllcome · 24/09/2019 20:52

I’d just do pure aloe Vera gel and take an antihistamine.
I would not put antiseptic cream, oil or Vaseline on it as they are comedogenic and will worsen acne.

mintbiscuit · 24/09/2019 21:11

Vaseline has a comedogenic rating of 0. It’s a myth it causes acne. It’s an occlusive and will help to retain the moisture in your skin as it heals (and may minimise peeling if you have damaged your barrier - I speak from bitter experience!)

Rosehip and jojoba are generally considered ok for acne prone skins as lower end of scale for comedogenic rating.

OP might be helpful if you could highlight the ingredients of the mask and what might have caused it.

Lilonetwo · 24/09/2019 21:21

I have put a little spot of sudocreme on one area to see if it helps by the morning.
Would I be unreasonable to not go to work Sad. Of course I will be going to work really. But I feel SO self conscious.

I don't mind if it peels, I just hope I haven't permanently damaged it. Its so sore and itchy. I have taken an antihistamine but I don't think it's helped

The mask was a pumpkin enzyme mask with salicylic acid. It's a very harsh one. It was fine at the weekend, but obviously this second session was far too strong.

Just took this photo. I think it might have burned my skin a bit (towards to bottom left of the photo)
Time will heal, I'm sure. I'm just so uncomfortable and itchy, even on my other side now.

Looks like a chemical burn. Alternate between sudocreme, aloe Vera and rose hip oil. Introduce tea tree oil in a couple of days, your skin is too raw to use it right now. Don’t feel too self conscious it really doesn’t look that bad. It’ll most likely clear up in a week

Lilonetwo · 24/09/2019 21:34

Thank you Ebonyandivory2 for reassurance it will get better in a week or two.
I hope putting aloe and sudocreme won't aggravate it more. Kicking myself.

Only use masks and scrubs weekly. Too much too soon for your little face xx just let it be and take a anti hystemine for a few weeks

Ebonyandivory2 · 24/09/2019 21:44

You’re welcome and don’t worry so many of us have been there. I once used hair removal cream and glycolic acid within a day of each other Blush that was most definitely a stupid thing to do. My skin was much worse than yours and was completely back to normal within 10 days so you’ll definitely be ok in a week

ThanksForAllTheFish · 24/09/2019 21:46

I personally can’t use Aloe Vera (makes my skin turn bright red and burn) so when I need to calm down sore irritated skin (which is a lot as I’m bloody allergic to everything these days!) I use something with oatmeal. Either by putting oats in warm water (inside the foot of an old stocking/tights - like you would do fit an oatmeal bath) and dabbing the oaty water all over my face. I also have an aveeno oatmeal moisturiser that’s good - it’s technically a body moisturiser but isn’t too greasy or heavy for the face.
Lanes Teangi cream is also great for healing and reducing red spots or red skin in general but I wouldn’t use it if I had chemical burns like yours as it would sting like crazy.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 24/09/2019 21:47

Got any natural yogurt in the fridge? Smear that all over tonight and it will calm it down. Obvs that won't work for work tomorrow, but it will calm this evening.

Lilonetwo · 24/09/2019 21:53

Oh I will definitely try the oatmeal thing in the morning!
No natural yoghurts (only petits filous!)

Very tempted to slather on the foundation tomorrow, but I know it's best not to isn't it.

Never posted but with sensitive skin/psoriasis issues in the past I've found calendula cream was best for me - its slightly antiseptic, very gentle. Has calmed any itchiness for me. I've searched 'can calendula cream be used on acne' & all the sites that came up said yes/recommend.

I've only bought Nelsons (tube, Boots or Amazon) or Ainsworths (London, but they do mail order).

vaseline shouldn't do any harm but I was told by a Homeopath that it doesn't let the skin breathe so slows down healing. I'm a bit wary of Aloe, it can irritate the skin. Piriton helped me but I used the original one and started nodding off at work.
Keep it simple, don't try too much all at once.

PersonaNonGarter · 24/09/2019 22:08

This happened to me.

You need Clarins SOS.

Cecilandsnail · 24/09/2019 23:13

Oatmeal! I have the most ludicrously reactive skin and can flare up like this from just ambient temperature change at times. Get some aveeno if you haven't got any, use a couple of times in the day, but SLATHER on at night and top with Vaseline. You'll be healed in 3 days tops!

AwkwardSquad · 25/09/2019 06:23

LRP cicaplast or Avène cicalfate repairing balm.

I agree with pp advice to be very gentle with your skin; I used to attack mine with all sorts of stuff to try to clear it but only ended up making it worse - irritated and reactive. I now have quite a minimal routine and I’m very careful when trying new products.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 25/09/2019 06:28

Absolutely no rose hip oil

It’s a precursor to VitA and that will irritate further.

Cold black tea compresses, and aloe Vera gel and take an antihistamine.
