I just can’t be bothered with putting together outfits anymore...

I have always loved clothes and still spend too much time and money on them. But the thing is that actually so many of the things I buy get worn very rarely because I just can’t be bothered anymore. I am mid forties and happiest in some well fitting jeans and some of the cool but comfortable trainers that are around at the moment.

I feel the same as you. I actually beginning to resent having to spend so much time and money on clothes. It was fun once, now I d rather be doing other th8ngs.

Anyway, I’ve decided that the answer is DRESSES for work and JEANS for non work.

Notcontent · 23/09/2019 13:24

Yes, I agree.

But what is your question?

After all, your jeans and trainers presumably have to be worn with something else. And if your well fitting jeans are the ‘skinny’ variety beloved of all on MN they’re probably going to look just a bit dated this season. So you could have fun choosing a new shape.

Or take a break from clothes shopping and concentrate on some other aspect of self presentation?

Could it be that the clothes you don’t wear no longer fit your life/lifestyle? I’m at least a decade older and happily spend ‘too much’ time and money on clothes. What stops me wearing some of them is that I tend to shop only for the more exciting bits of my life - and find I have nothing suitable for day to day occupations.

I've gone for dresses with trainers or boots with a biker jacket.
Or jeans with navy or white tops and trainers or boots.
Absolutely nothing else and it works well for me

CountFosco · 23/09/2019 17:41

If you're not wearing your clothes you're buying the wrong clothes for your lifestyle. Spend time and money on your everyday clothes and buy cheap and cheerful for the fancy stuff (unless you are the kind of person who wears the same black dress every time you go out for years). But really, you don't have to spend time and money on clothes if you don't want to.

Floisme · 23/09/2019 18:52

I don't see what the problem is. Being interested in clothes isn't compulsory. If you're no longer finding it fun, give it up and look for something else. Apologies if I've missed something.

Musicforsnorks · 23/09/2019 18:58

Stick to what is tried and tested and makes you feel comfy and appropriate.
I’m similar, although I do still waste time over-thinking clothes as I seem to oddly enjoy it ;)

I’m currently simplifying.
Trying to build s small collection of decent stuff so that i can nail it and not have to think about it anymore.
However, I’m having issues finding stuff. The shops are at an all time low, so you’re missing nothing. Fashion and clothes are just over-riced and horribly made now, almost everywhere. I even sent a Toast coat back this week because it was not even remotely worth the stack of cash I paid for it, not even 50% wool.

It’s a depressing landscape really. Just tat and polyester for £40 and upwards. I see many stores eventually folding at this rate.

I want a uniform now, simple, trusted and fashion-free.

Musicforsnorks · 23/09/2019 18:59

Over-riced! Haha. Well anyway I’m mid forties too.

BolloxtoGender · 23/09/2019 19:52

yes uniform is the way to go.

Like Mark Zuckerberg

BolloxtoGender · 23/09/2019 19:54

I'm kinda semi doing that already at work. Uniform of

black crepey trousers
Silk top/blouse
Smart heels - slightly unusual e.g. red suede shoe-boot, heeled.

Musicforsnorks · 23/09/2019 19:56

@BolloxtoGender or Steve jobs.

I need to nail this!

BolloxtoGender · 23/09/2019 19:58

Then in the winter I have a smart Marella faux fur coat, I throw it on and it instantly smartens everything up.

WellTidy · 23/09/2019 20:00

This is why I buy pretty much all my clothes in one shop. I can buy what goes together all at the same time. Less to think about and spend time on.

BolloxtoGender · 23/09/2019 20:00

I guess it's kinda the 'all fur coat no knickers' look....Grin

BolloxtoGender · 23/09/2019 20:02

I agree about the price we pay for polyester/viscose/rayon. I refuse to buy. Honestly 10 years ago, I had expected wool/silk/cashmere for the prices they are charging now.

BolloxtoGender · 23/09/2019 20:04

..and I wonder if this is the mindset that gets us into a fashion rut in our 40s....like we could see in some of the older generation...Confused

XingMing · 23/09/2019 20:55

I suspect that age and time sorts us out into interested/disinterested in clothes. I see some old ladies who are clearly still entranced by clothes and fashion and who, by and large, look wonderful or at least interestingly eccentric, and others who have concluded it's all too much effort who retire into beige fleece and florals. Take your pick!

managedmis · 23/09/2019 20:59

Dunno dude

Today I'm wearing a grey, fine plaid tartan pencil skirt with a black and white tucked in zebra print short sleeve shirt, which I'm being to think is a neutral colour. Looks fine

HerRoyalNotness · 23/09/2019 21:12

@managedmis I like the sound of that outfit

I don’t have anywhere to wear anything nice or out an outfit together. The non working mums here were athletic wear, i feel overdressed in jeans and a nice T-shirt! I get a sideways look if I wear a casual dress to playgroup is the super market

hammeringinmyhead · 23/09/2019 22:19

I've discovered I really miss planning outfits, having not been able to for a while. I spent November to June in breastfeeding tops and leggings (later skinnies, when they fitted). I'm about to go back to work and I've bought some new tops qith interesting prints, black and white polka dot trainers, a new coat. I'm so excited!
