*pic* Semi permanent that actually covers grey?!

So, I'm not v grey but can't keep yanking them out as I don't want a pubey halo to emerge...

But there seem to be so few semi permanents, and I really don't want a permanent boxy look...

Any ideas? I only wash my hair twice a week so a washin washout could do, but nothing has ever covered my whites! Why doesn't white hair absorb dye???

It didn't work too well. Also used masscarra...

silverystream · 23/09/2019 14:28

Well, I think mascara would be better than Sharpie!Grin Didn't you have problems with transference, though...?I suppose if it is the waterproof sort it might not be a problem..

silverystream · 23/09/2019 14:31

Thankfully, I've not particularly noticed any transference. I did play it safe at first by using an old pillowslip but it was fine. I suppose tea and coffee stains pretty steadfastly.

NoisingUpNissan · 23/09/2019 14:35

OK, I've just dumped an espresso over my fringe...

It works!

Thank you!

But worried about rain on the school run though...

I also tried Just for Men shampoo dye. It coloured everything but the white hairs, the bath, tiles, towels, a dry patch of skin on my face. I'm trying henna next.

NoisingUpNissan · 23/09/2019 14:49

Can you get brown henna?

But worried about rain on the school run though...

Grin Don't worry too much as it would only be like very watered down coffee should rain hit it. I've never had a problem. When I bath or shower the water doesn't colour up particularly.

silverystream · 23/09/2019 14:57

Looks fab, OP, by the way!Smile

TinklyLittleLaugh · 23/09/2019 15:21

I’m definitely going to try that Silver

silverystream · 23/09/2019 15:30

Hope it works out well for you, Tinkly and you get the colour you want. Smile

NoisingUpNissan · 23/09/2019 15:32

So thanks for all your help.... One fi Al questions.... These pubey little fuckers... What do I do... Do I need to start using straighteners?! Hmm

OP posts:
silverystream · 23/09/2019 15:36

Yes, I do use straighteners. Only on the frizzy sections, though. I've two main clumps. Antifrizz hair serum and using a bit of hairspray also helps. I'm hoping as my hair gets longer frizz will be less of an issue and the weight of the hair might make it sit flatter.

silverystream · 23/09/2019 15:37

The straightening doesn't take very long at all when it's not all over, though.

silverystream · 23/09/2019 15:44

I've been really pleased with these straighteners:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Remington-Straight-Straighteners-Variable-Temperature/dp/B005BNMWQQ/ref=sr11_6?crid=O03K82SU1GWN&keywords=remington+hair+straightener&qid=1569249730&s=gateway&sprefix=Remington+hair+s%2Caps%2C171&sr=8-6

Cheap and heat up very quickly. I use them on the coolest setting.

NoisingUpNissan · 23/09/2019 16:00

Thank you! Feel like Ive had a style consultation! Smile

silverystream · 23/09/2019 16:03

You're welcome. Just happy to have helped. Smile

NoTheresa · 23/09/2019 16:57

But coffee is such a strong smell. Even if spills on your clothes you usually have to wash the whole garment. Sponging doesn’t help.

Looks like a great idea, though.

NoTheresa · 23/09/2019 17:01

Nice n Easy Dark Blonde 91 is brilliant.

silverystream · 23/09/2019 17:27

NoTheresa, well I don't need to use much instant coffee. Can't really smell it. You could use black tea to give brown tones too. That doesn't smell much. Equally people might only be dyeing a small clump of their hair. Also I don't think coffee smells particularly bad, anyway. With my particular hair dyeing tea blend the coverage is so good considering my hair was pretty grey all over. No roots either. No worry about synthetic irritant dye pigments and allergic reactions. Using various teas, coffee and turmeric is also very inexpensive.

Herocomplex · 23/09/2019 18:14

L’oreal preference palma- natural light brown. The box looks a bit scary and wiggy but it’s working for me.
I’m quite tempted by the coffee suggestion though!

needmoresleep1 · 23/09/2019 18:44

Semi's don't cover white hair they just blend, if you want full coverage then you need to use a permanent

SwedishEdith · 23/09/2019 20:03

Castings covers my white hairs. I must be 80% grey/white but it only really shows when it grows or I've missed a bit. Might try tea/coffee as an experiment.

Cawillmay · 25/09/2020 12:02

Just been reading this with interest...@NoisingUpNissan have you continued with the concoction from @silverystream ? Did it work??
I want to try it..my hair is similar colour to yours so I need to get a browny colour and wanted to know how much tea/coffee you used (and also when it says brew in teapot, I’m
Assuming that means with water, but how much?) And if you used anything else?
Also thank you in advance @silverystream for this amazing suggestion!!

superstar63 · 25/09/2020 12:23

@silverystream - If I as to do this for the first time as I have about an inch or bit more of grey roots at the moment, the rest of my hair is light brown so I am thinking of strong black tea to try first.

So that the whole head would be the same colour do you use it all over and then enventually just the roots?

Thanks

WhereAreWeNow · 25/09/2020 13:15

My hairdresser told me to leave Casting on for longer than the box says - at least 40 mins. I do and it's made a difference to the coverage.

I got one of those little mascara wand touch up things (L'Oreal) but found it a bit messy.

I've wondered about a brown Sharpie too! I'm sure I once read Sali Hughes saying that's what she did with stray greys.

I think if money and time were no object, the best solution would be to get a really good colourist to do some complicated highlights/lowlights, picking out grey hairs to paint by strand, to blend it all in. But I don't have the time or money so I carry on with the semi-permanent.

Actually, I'm not doing it so often now because I don't think you can see the greys on Zoom!
