How do you dress if you’re very pear shaped?

I struggle with fashion because of my body shape. I see loads of styles which I love, but when I wear it it’s really unflattering! My waist is 27/28 inches and my hips are 41/42 inches, so anything which sits on my hips without being fitted at my waist makes me look really wide. My current wardrobe is dire - a mix of tees, leggings, a few nice dresses, and a few random black vests/jumpers and jeggings.

Things I’ve ruled out (which I love the look of!) are -
pencil skirts
pinafore dresses
t shirt dresses
most bodycon styles

They really don’t suit me and I don’t feel good wearing them.

So far things which I’ve found work are:

midi dresses worn with a waist belt
Jeggings worn with a v neck jumper/top
a line dresses
high waisted skirts.

If anyone has tips for dressing a pear shape body I’d appreciate it - tired of struggling to get dressed on a day to day basis at the moment! ConfusedFlowers

Fellow pear here! I find off the shoulder dress that are tighter round the waist and flowy at the hips very flattering! Quiz is the best for these dresses for weddings etc, I only wear them now and always get compliments and it's often mistaken for ted baker!

Also a pear, and I wear lots of fit and flare dresses and full circle or A line skirts for work. Boden has been good for dresses this year, and I got a lovely paperbag skirt from H and M with a nice high fitted waist.

I wear a lot of high waisted a-line skirts, either long or knee length, and then high waisted trousers, that are wide legged or flared. I wear a lot of t-shirts or tops with flared sleeves. I also have some 1950s style dresses that work for me. Then I wear long (thigh length) plaid shirts with shorts and tights (that's about as casual as I get.) I don't wear skinny jeans or leggings because I have chunky legs and they don't look right on me.

50s style skirts and dresses are great for pears. I love a full skirted skirt or dress nipped I’m at the waist.

Being pear shaped is much healthier too!

I wear: longish tops/ tunics or big baggy jumpers that cover the arse and slim fitting trousers. High waisted A line skirts. Wide legged trousers and slim fitting tops. Over the summer I wore my culottes a lot. Lots of lovely dresses like my corduroy one from Toast and I have a couple from Seasalt that get lots of wear. I have made peace with my pearyness Smile

Also I believe boat necks are better than v necks as they balance out the hips more

Ive come to the conclusion that its very stressful trying to dress to hide the fact that you are a certain shape, and that it is not shameful to have big hips or be pear shaped.
Saying that, I probably wouldnt wear bodycon dresses, but it is liberating to be able to wear jeans and fuck it if people can tell i have hips and arse. Im currently sporting some gorgeous leopard ones from sainsburies that amazingly seem to fit me on both thighs and waist, and a black tshirt

Also ‘mum jeans’ quite good. Nice stiff denim, a bit cropped, high waist.

Avoid pencil skirts like the plague. Likewise bias cut which is back with the 90s revival. Tho I do look wistfully at those shiny skirts.
Get trousers altered to fit. Elasticated also good, COS can be good for this.
IMO long tops to try and hide your bottom does the opposite.
Apart from that, don't worry about it all.

@sorrythisusernameisinuse thanks for the advice - I don’t have anything off the shoulder, I’ll invest in a nice dress!

@Branleuse completely agree - I have accepted my shape, I just used to wear random clothes I liked which didn’t particularly suit my shape - like baggy tops which make me look twice as big as I am 🙈 I also have some leopard skinny jeans from topshop which I’ll never part with 😂

Tube skirts and pencil skirts. Shift or straight or wrap or deep v necks = very unflattering and draw attention to my lopsided ness !

Knee length or lower dresses / skirts - thunder thighs here.
Fit n flare dresses
Circle or a line skirts
Fitted tops - boat or crew or turtle neck - with a padded bra - balconette are the best shape
Wide or straight or carrot trousers.
