Should I stop using conditioner on my thin hair?

I don't know what's happened to my hair recently but it goes lank and looks even thinner than usual when I straighten it at the minute. At its current length (just above shoulder), I usually curl it which makes it look passable but I'm starting to wonder whether it's getting a bit overloaded with products.

I use silicone free products and have tried various shampoo/conditioner combos but have been googling and using no conditioner seems to be the answer I'm looking for. I wouldn't go cold turkey and would still use a leave in conditioner/hair protector spray before styling but just wondering if anyone else has the same problem with their hair? If so, what works for you? Or am I destined to live with thin, lank locks for the rest of my days?

Have you tried Toni and Guy sea salt spray? It’s very good for defining curls and adding texture

NotGoingToFall · 22/09/2019 15:16

I've stopped conditioner years ago, but do use leave in spray, helps to detangle. I've also got naturally fine hair.

Orofluido oil is only thing light enough that I can use in my very fine hair. I only do ends and mid lengths with a small amount.

McDougal · 22/09/2019 16:47

Sea salt spray has the desired effect but my hair goes so greasy the following day with horrifically dry ends that it doesn't feel worth it unfortunately, Longtalljosie.

Hijack away if it gets us more suggestions Grin

I definitely think shampoo only and a spray leave in conditioner if needed is the way forward. My hair feels a lot fuller today but the ultimate test will be how greasy it looks tomorrow.

I'll google the oil mentioned by 123 as I really feel as if my hair will need something conditioning, especially over winter.

Actually i would go the other way:

Try the curly girl method where you only low-poo & condition or co-wash a couple of times a week. I know it sounds crazy but my thin, lank hair actually has some shape and volume to it now after a few months. My hair is only very very slightly wavy (flicks out at the ends) so you don't have to have curly hair. I think the key is really massaging the scalp when you wash and then scrunch drying with some hair-friendly gel. Counter intuitive but true.

My hair is fine & when I fad it in a chin length bob I had to wash it every day.
I’ve had it cut so it cut into neck but with long layers on top
It’s much better as it’s not as limp

Every mth I wash hair in Washing up liquid to strip it from all products
Then wash with shampoo after
No condition
It does get tangled, but I use big comb with large vents £1 shop
Then I blow upside down to dry off a little and put
Charles Worthington
Weightless mousse

I like this from Pantene:

pantene.co.uk/en-gb/browse-by-collection/micellar-collection/micellar-shampoo

NOT any of the other ranges as they’re full of silicones. I need SLS to clean my hair or it feels weighed down.

I also like the L’Oreal shampoo and conditioner in the teal bottles and John Frieda volume.

Skip the leave in conditioner, they’re usually full of silicone and heavy oils.

kmini · 22/09/2019 17:41

Which leave in spray do you use OP?

RuffleCrow · 22/09/2019 18:41

I always thought i needed SLS for my hair too @takeachanseyonme Then i realised it was invented to degrease aeroplane and tank engines in WW2. Basically they only added it to shampoos after the war because the government had shitloads of the stuff laying around and thus it was sold off dirt cheap to manufacturers. Yuk. My hair's a lot of things but an aeroplane engine it definitely isn't!

McDougal · 22/09/2019 18:59

I'm still undecided about the whole SLS debate and feel like it very much depends on what suits your hair.

For PP who suggested curly girl, I have tried it but it wasn't for me and I couldn't handle the eugh phase before it suddenly starts working for me. I did give it a few months!

Kmini, I've just started using Number 4 Lumiere d'hiver Super Comb Prep & Protect after getting it in this month's birch box. I thought I'd need a lot to be able to get a comb through my conditioner-less hair but it only took a couple of spritzes and my comb glided through so I'd definitely recommend it. Not sure on full size price but the 30ml spray I got should last me a while if it's only a couple of spritzes at a time.

@McDougal does the lumiere help with frizz and styling or just detangling?

McDougal · 22/09/2019 20:13

I'd say it helps with frizz and detangling but not sure it would do anything for styling. This is another problem...needing to use other products on top is just another layer of product to weigh the hair down Angry

@OpiesOldLady

Are you still using the Nioxin products with positive effect?

I realise this is an old thread, but would really appreciate your input/feedback as it sounds the most promising for my thinning hair, but I am wary of forking out so much.

Thanks
