Those of you with fine hair

How often do you wash it? I have always washed mine every day but I am wondering if this is too much.

And what, if anything, do you use on it?

My hair is fine and curly, but not as curly as I'd like.

I normally wash it every 2 days and use both shampoo and conditioner - the brand I like best at the moment is Gliss ultimate volume (in dark "Cadbury" blue packaging) which you can sometimes get from the pound shop or Savers. I let my hair dry naturally and don't brush it when it's wet as that just seems to "flatten" it. When it's nearly dry, I separate it with my fingers, pushing upwards through it. Some days that is all I do and I don't use a brush at all. If I do feel it needs a brush, I hang my head upside down and brush "upwards." I rarely use any other products, but sometimes if I want extra volume (and don't mind having to wash it again the next day) I use Boots curl cream and a salt spray, but again, leave it to dry naturally. Blow drying never makes my hair look thicker unless I use tonnes of mousse (which I tried in the 80s) and I don't really like the way it feels after that.

It normally looks best on the second day and occasionally still looks good on the third day, which is good if it enables me to tweak my washing days so I don't have to wash it on the two days a week I have to leave home quite early.

It also tends to appear to have more body if it's been in a pony tail for a few hours and then released. I keep getting told I'm having a good hair day after doing sport!

I used to wash every day but now go every other day (more to protect colour and reduce heat damage from drying).

I use Moroccan Oil when damp, a heat protecting spray before drying. If I want to bulk my hair a bit, I'll use some mousse, and some wax on the ends when dry to give some definition.

I have short hair - this works best for my hair (it doesn't really grow beyond shoulder length anyway).

BarbedBloom · 20/09/2019 12:39

Every day. I have tried many times to reduce this but it didn't help. Dry shampoo makes my head itchy and doesn't help that much.

nothingwittyhere · 20/09/2019 13:22

I wash and condition every day, because my hair seems to look better that way. When washing it I finish by combing it the "wrong way" over my head, then rub through thickener, spray mousse at the crown, and a final light misting of salt spray. Doing this it looks clean and shiny and lifted at the roots Smile. The "comb over" rinse also seems to bring out the waves (it's mentioned by some Curly Girl Method users as a technique).

I have very fine hair, but lots and lots of it. I wash and condition every day, but even on the rare occasion that I don't, it doesn't really make any difference - except that it's easier to plait because it's greasier!

lazylinguist · 20/09/2019 13:35

I wash mine every day because it looks greasy after 24 hours. Dry shampoo gives it a horrible texture and makes my head itch. I've tried 'training' it to need washing less frequently and it doesn't work. Besides, what does 'too often' actually mean? What does it do to your hair?

AbandonHopeDarr3n · 20/09/2019 13:38

Mine is fine and wavy. Normally, I wash it every other day. I've just decided to start curly girl method this week though, so I washed it with baby shampoo on Wednesday and have just co-washed it with a sulphate free conditioner. So far, so good! I also use mousse to scrunch it into curls.

Obviously, that's irrelevant if you have straight hair.

Wash it every 2/3 days, any old shampoo and a conditioner bar from Lush I find this doesn't weigh it down or coat it with too much goop. I use a powder dry shampoo using an atomizer between washes. Never use a hair dryer or styling tools, it dries in 10/15 mins. Rarely need to brush it to get rid of tangles or knots

AbandonHopeDarr3n · 20/09/2019 14:37

I also don't dry my hair, except a 'towel' dry, (but with an old t-shirt instead of a towel - top tip, if you have frizz prone hair like I do)!

NotquitewhatImeant · 20/09/2019 14:39

Fine shoulder length hair and I was every day but I don’t blow dry it. It’s fine but there is lots of it if that makes sense.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 20/09/2019 14:44

I use head and shoulders 2 in 1. And every so often the elvive thickening serum/conditioner (green bottle)

I wash it maybe 2-3 times a week as I WFH a lot so no need to add styling product.

But when I do, I add some serum, comb through with a wide tooth comb and leave it to dry (shoulder length). Then I might squitz some hairspray at the roots if necessary.

CottonSock · 20/09/2019 14:44

Every other day

Magnificentbeast · 23/09/2019 14:53

Thanks for the replies.

I have shortish straight fine hair. I should probably have mentioned that to begin with!

Although my dd has curly hair (thick) and I've just heard about the curly girl method @AbandonHopeDarr3n so I'm introducing that as much as possible for her.

I'm trialling washing every other day. I guess it takes a while to get used to. I used to use hair mousse and stopped a while back. I think I just ran out and then didn't buy it again.

It's complicated as I'm also trying to reduce chemical nasties as much as possible.

I think I'm doomed to having lacklustre flat hair! Sad

I have fine hair. It is sort of straight, but more kinky. It certainly isn't wavy. And it isn't kinky all over, more kinky underneath. It is not 'good hair'.

I wash tit every 4-5 days. It needs to be washed every 3 days, but on day 4, I spray liberally with dry shampoo (Batiste tropical) and I get another 1-2 days out of it. The dry shampoo makes it look way thicker.

BigFatBloomers · 23/09/2019 14:58

I don't wash mine at all. I have gone 'no poo' , which I think it just like the curly girly method.

It doesn't need cleaning nearly as much as it used to (at least every other day before) and when I do, I just rinse it through with conditioner.

StormTreader · 23/09/2019 14:59

Shoulderlength fine and sparse hair here thats straight as a ruler!
Generally have to wash it every day because with no curl, theres nothing to stop the oil running down it it seems, even when I washed it less frequently, the final day was always "so greasy it would leave visible comb lines" and I just couldnt spend every 2 or 3 days horribly embarrassed.

Something thats really helped me is getting a non-ionic hairdryer (they arent the easiest to find now, I got a Lidl cheap one that had a switch) - ionic smoothing just makes my hair look awful!

The other thing is on the rare days I have to not wash it the next day (camping etc), I wash it and fill it with dry shampoo the second it's dry. If it gets greasy then dry shampoo seemingly wont touch it, but it really stops it getting greasy to start with.
