Sun cream staining

poppym12 · 17/09/2019 21:43

I wore my favourite white top on holiday a couple of weeks ago and after washing it a few times, there's still some yellow staining on the straps from the sun protection I was wearing.
I've tried the oxy stuff, adding hydrogen peroxide, using biological washing powder and also adding bleach to the wash. It's improved but still doesn't look properly white.

Any tips please?

I have a gite and suncream stains on bedding and towels are a nightmare.
I have had good results by soaking the affected items in viakal- soak overnight then wash. Then repeat if required.

I'll try leaving it out all day tomorrow as the forecast is pretty good.

As for the viakal, do you mean the spray stuff that removes limescale?

Spray elbow grease on the fabric leave for at least 10min and wash

Yes, that viakal!

Bleach won't work - it turns the stains pink. It is the P20 waterproof types of sunscreen which are the worst.

ACE is recommended on here I think, I have it on my shopping list

poppym12 · 18/09/2019 13:28

Yes, bleach definitely turns sun cream stains pink! That was a bit disconcerting.
It's currently soaking in Viakal as I've run out of Elbow Grease and can't get that locally.

I have found the same top in a bigger size so I'm tempted to buy that too just in case Grin

It's a miracle!!! Thank you for the Viakal tip averylongtimeago. I soaked it for a couple of hours, washed it then hung it in the sunshine until just now. I can barely see any discolouration at all. Brilliant 😁

Must ask though, how on earth did you discover that method?

I'm glad to learn about Viakal, as I have never found a way to shift sunscreen stains.

I can, however, prevent them. If you've worn a pale garment and used sunscreen, then spray the collar/straps/cuffs generously with Vanish spray before washing. Even if you cannot see any sunscreen marks. I think it's the laundering that brings them up and sets them.

All good tips on here, thank you. I was worried that I'd need to embrace the monochrome look - without the white - for future warm weather days but fortunately I now have various things to try to get rid of or prevent the staining.
Is there any way to save a thread?
