Creating root volume in long hair

Longhairdonotcare · 16/09/2019 02:25

As my name suggests, I have long thickish hair. A bit of a wave in it although I often straighten it as it can appear frizzy otherwise.

Does anyone have any recommendations, either styling products and/or techniques for creating some body and volume at the roots?

I think flat hair can be quite ageing and i’m already in my mid 40s so don’t need any help in that department!

I don’t have layers other than a few long ones at the front for a little bit of shape. I’m open to layers as long as they look ok with straight as well as wavy hair styling.

I have a professional job so I like to look well groomed for work.

Advice welcomed.

I use dry shampoo for blonde hair.

Tigi Bee Hive dry shampoo. It's my holy grail hair product.

Thanks all, I use Batiste on day 2/3 to avoid roots looking greasy but it doesn’t give me ‘bounce’ if that makes sense. I want to drive and avoid the stiffness of hairspray but have volume if I can.

Dry hair with your head upside down, or let it dry in a top-of-head ponytail before straightening or whatever you do, or if you part it on a certain side let it dry or dry with a hairdryer going the opposite way and flick back over when dry..

Root powder and a back comb

If you wash your hair in the shower, give it a final comb through from the nape of your neck towards your forehead, so that it all ends up in front of you. I do this (although I have shorter hair than you) and it gives me day-long root lift, and also makes my fringe sit flat. I don't blow dry my hair so this is my way of adding lift without heat.

Got2b powder'ful volumizing is really good!

SteelRiver · 16/09/2019 16:23

I have a shorter layer which ends around my chin. My hair is so heavy, I wouldn't be able to get any lift at all if it was all one length.
I find using big velcro rollers and mousse helps to work some volume in at the top. Also, Got2b root lifting powder works well but it leaves my hair feeling not touchable, if that makes sense.

I love tigi bed head superstar for a day thickening spray. You spray it onto wet hair and I find my hair has much more volume around the roots the next day and just feels more swishy and thick.

I have long thick hair and this is what I do -

After towel drying I comb through with a wide tooth comb then wrap in a towel for 10/15 minutes.

I comb through again and dry upside down concentrating on the roots/scalp. I never use a high heat.

Then I comb through and dry as normal.

I use a Dyson hair dryer now and it gives volume but also shine and no frizz.

If I want a bouncy look I finish off with a babyliss big hair.

I never use straighteners.

Thanks all for your fantastic tips, will be giving them all a try. Off to purchase some products, fortunately I already have the Dyson hairdryer.

I have a Babyliss gadget called a root boost. It's fab. No knotty hair from backcombing. It's not avail on amazon at the moment but there's a few on amazon.
