Excessively Greasy Hair

My hair has always been on the oily side, but for some reason (possibly PCOS related), the last few weeks it’s become a real issue. I wash it once a day, but after a few hours it’ll look like I’ve washed it with Crisp & Dry. Have tried Tresemme, Head and Shoulders, T Gel, L’oreal clay shampoos to no avail.

Can anyone recommend a shampoo or conditioning treatment that might help?

TIA

After going culy girl, myself, I tried out some of my silicone free conditioners on DS1, whose hair and scalp would get disgusting (not helped by serious soap dodging) and his hair is lasting so much longer now.

How often are you washing your hair?
Do you take any medication?

Smokeahontas · 15/09/2019 23:04

@PickAChew - which brand do you use?

@BringTheBounceBack - once a day. Not on any medication at the mo.

DD is the same and she’s been washing twice and using warm water first then cold water and no conditioner. So far there’s a big difference

LuciferTheCat · 15/09/2019 23:06

sorry meant to add she uses the body shop fuji green tea shampoo

Mine is also very oily.

I find washing it in water as cool as I can stand, applying mousse to the roots before I dry it (seems to act a bit like antiperspirant on armpits and stop so much oil being produced) and keeping it tied back are the things that work best for me.

I definitely still to wash it every other day as by the morning after the second night it holds whatever shape I brush it into it's so greasy.

PickAChew · 15/09/2019 23:08

I have all sorts of odds and ends, but ones that have agreed with his hair really well have been a Dr Organics one from Holland & Barrett and a Watermelong "holiday hair" one from primark.

I tried after noticing that my own hair was less greasy - something I've struggled with well into my 40s, still having to wash my hair EOD because it never made it to 48 hours without beginning to disgust me. Apparently silicones seal the hair shaft, preventing natural oils from soaking into the hair, like they're supposed to.

BillywigSting · 15/09/2019 23:09

Also be very very sparing with conditioner.

Preferably find one with no silicone (any ingredient that ends in 'one' is a silicone) and only put it one the very ends, think the bit that would stick out of a bobble if it was in a long plait, and only every other wash.

I go through about three bottles of shampoo to one bottle of conditioner

BringTheBounceBack · 15/09/2019 23:11

Washing once a day could very well be a cause, if not the cause.

Silicone free products can really help for a start, the build up of silicone can make your hair like this and actually reduce hairs moisture.

Tresemme is really crap on the hair tbh, steer clear from that. I find my hair feeling lanky and disgusting even after using it once.

I used to be like you, had to wash my hair daily. The key was to wean myself off it. It did take weeks of finding hairstyles that worked through the translation period and it did feel grim for a bit, but once you’re out the cycle it’s a HUGE difference. I only wash my hair once or twice a week now.

StormBaby · 15/09/2019 23:11

If I cover mine in coconut oil overnight once a week then wash out, it dries right up out. Your scalp is actually dry and is overcompensating

BoswellsBollocks · 15/09/2019 23:19

I discovered a cheapy Tesco micellar shampoo that has meant my hair can now at least go a day without feeling greasy.

BillywigSting · 16/09/2019 07:25

Had some really painful acne leftover from pregnancy that even prescriptions from the Dr weren't touching.

Dr organics tea tree face wash got it under control, and my skin is almost completely clear now with just the odd tiny spot about once a month, so I highly rate them. Have never tried their shampoo but if it's half as good as their face wash then it's brilliant

halloumi2019 · 16/09/2019 11:43

I agree that daily washing can be a contributing factor.

I used to be obsessed with my hair after a fresh, bouncy blowdry, so would foolishly wash it daily. At first my hair looked lovely but eventually it did start to look limp and weighed down. A bouncy blow dry was impossible because it would just look greasy and flat no matter what. Once I stopped washing it as frequently it went back to normal.

Thanks for all your replies. Glad it’s not just me that experiences it! Couldn’t sleep last night so ended up doing a bit of research. Have ordered two shampoos from The Green People, they seem to get good reviews.

I grew out my fringe & started using dry shampoo on non wash days...I now wash my hair 1/2 a week.

Seriously game changing. Dry shampoo is amazing, it’s actually better the day after I’ve used it.
